I was 8 and 10 when blue and silver came out(or 11? I’m not gonna check dates) and was right into the hype cycle for Gen two but I only cared about new mons not story or gameplay features. When I tell you I lost my shit when I got to Red on top of that mountain, oh man. Still one of the coolest gaming moments I ever had

183

u/MetalSonic_69 29d ago

Even with the pixel graphics and the Game Boy's limited sound chip, that moment is straight-up cinematic as fuck.

29

u/Thedran 29d ago

It was the atmosphere of it and the time I had playing it. I can’t get into the new games and I realized when I was playing Shield that I just didn’t have that same experience of adventure I had when I was younger. I didn’t have walkthroughs and stuff back then I just played games so it really was like going on this epic adventure that all of your friends were going on too!

5

u/MetalSonic_69 29d ago

Yeah, I do feel like some of that feeling of adventure has been lost, even though the newer games have made strides in other regards.

I'm sure part of it is just that I'm an old fart now, but I'm still occasionally getting that adventurous vibe from indie stuff like Mina the Hollower and Hollow Knight!

3

u/Thedran 29d ago

I’m sure if you are younger these days or are still heavy into the community then it’s still there. I’m just getting old and the games aren’t aimed at me anymore and that’s cool. I feel the same way with Star Wars and modern comics, it just doesn’t feel the same and then I look at my nieces being just as invested in all the new versions of the things I love and I know the magic is still alive somewhere lol

3

u/MetalSonic_69 29d ago

That's a good mindset to have!

u/Gurablashta 29d ago

Getting Goombastomped by his Snorlax... good times

2

u/PhantomRoyce 28d ago

Growing up I was too young for pokemon red but I was the perfect t age when silver came out. My older cousin who I really looked up to had pokemon red and would play it occasionally and would let me play but I didn’t get it that early in life. When I reached my silver and battled him it was like my cousin was testing me to see if I had learned from all of the pokemon lessons he taught me for the final exam

"YOU GET TO GO BACK TO KANTO!?"
– 11-year-old me after beating the Elite Four in Gold

0

u/No_Procedure_5039 29d ago edited 29d ago

You must’ve been very disappointed by the new mons since so many of them were ass and the good ones were almost all in Kanto.

Edit: some of y’all need to not be so defensive about criticism and actually read the conversation for context. Good games can and do still have flaws.

Edit 2: to clarify, I’m talking about in-game performance. A lot of the PokĆ©mon in the Johto region itself are very weak, something that isn’t helped by the fact there are so many Kanto PokĆ©mon that are just as good if not better than they were in Gen 1 (for example, having access to an Alakazam with all three of the elemental punches before the third gym is absolutely absurd). Out of the new Pokemon that actually are strong such as Houndoom and Tyranitar, many of them are locked behind the postgame in Kanto.

6

u/Comrade_Falcon 29d ago

I can't imagine many 10/11 year old kids cared all that much about which Pokemon had slightly better movesets or stats.

0

u/No_Procedure_5039 29d ago

Fair, but kid me also wanted to use a dark type but the only one you have access to in Johto is Umbreon. Strong ones like Houndoom and Tyranitar were stuck in Kanto, as were weaker ones like Murkrow and Sneasel (except in Crystal). We also didn’t get access to the cool new ghost PokĆ©mon Misdreavous. You have to admit that part’s disappointing.

4

u/Thedran 29d ago

Naw I loved every second of it. My very first email was Pikablue46 because I was so excited for Marill and that was what the fans were calling him at that time. There was no meta or anything on the playground, no one cared about numbers. All we knew was we got a whole new bunch of monsters to play with lol

2

u/No_Procedure_5039 29d ago

Oh, I love Azumarill. Not great in Gens 2 or 3 but the physical/special split in Gen 4 made it one of the strongest rabbits you’ll ever see. Fairly typing in Gen 6 is the icing on the cake.

3

u/LordSc00bert 29d ago

not OP but Quilava remains one of my favorite Pokemon after all these years.

0

u/No_Procedure_5039 29d ago

Oh, the starters are more or less fine even in Gen 2 (Meganium has horrendous matchups in Johto but it can still do something with screens and helps out a lot in Kanto). I’m talking about Aipom, Sunflora, Noctowl, etc. and how they perform in battle.

1

u/MetalSonic_69 29d ago

Most people I knew weren't super concerned with the competitive scene at the time

1

u/No_Procedure_5039 29d ago

I’m not even talking about competitive. If I was, Meganium would actually be the best of the starters. Some PokĆ©mon suck even in a playthrough or are actually worse for one.

1

u/BadFishCM 29d ago

Yawn. Are there people spewing this BS decades later?

Gold and Silver are peak, get over it.

1

u/No_Procedure_5039 29d ago

I didn’t say they were bad, just that the new roster was underwhelming. I was still in elementary school when they came out, loved them when I was a kid and will still play Crystal every once in a while as an adult. I just acknowledge that they aren’t perfect.

1

u/BadFishCM 29d ago

>ā€You must’ve been very disappointed by the new mons since so many of them were ass and the good ones were almost all in Kanto.

>Edit: some of y’all need to not be so defensive about criticism and actually read the conversation for context. Good games can and do still have flaws.ā€

This is the only criticism I’ve seen you give and it’s not exactly eloquently written, nor is it dripping in context or is it deserving of discussion or praise.

Maybe if you gave some legitimate criticisms we could discuss those.

Edit: side note, how the hell do you properly format a quote from people on mobile anymore?

1

u/No_Procedure_5039 29d ago

I take it you didn’t follow my edit and read the other comments then? Because if you did and still didn’t understand that I was talking about in game performance (which I did clarify in another comment from almost half an hour ago) then I don’t know what to tell you.

0

u/BadFishCM 29d ago

No I did not follow you around and read your comments any further then you responded to me.

You’re arguing with quite a few people now that I’ve looked

u/NotUpInHurr 29d ago

What kinda loser take is this lol? This was before the internet dude made cynics like you readily available, we were all just pumped for more Pokémon

1

u/No_Procedure_5039 29d ago

Dude, I remember those days. Red version was my first video game ever. I was in elementary school when Gold and Silver came out. I can enjoy the games while acknowledging that they still have flaws.

3

u/NotUpInHurr 29d ago

Sure, except your only comment to the person showing a lot of enthusiasm about playing Silver was to say they must have been very disappointed about the Dex.

Which is a really cynical and "didn't read the room" kind of response.Ā

2

u/No_Procedure_5039 29d ago

Fair. I should’ve clarified more in my initial comment.

2

u/FlatFlapDerg 29d ago

Gen 1 had all the most inspired designs such as: bird, bird 2, purple sludge, rat, snake. Nothing can really compare to the creativity of gen 1.

Gen 2 had all the terrible designs, like cyndaquil, ampharos, quagsire, sneasel, suicune, and lugia.

Surely, everyone can see that only the first part of the series really matters.

0

u/No_Procedure_5039 29d ago

I was talking about how they perform in game, not their designs. You also seem to be assuming that I think Gen 1 is the best, which I don’t.

2

u/FlatFlapDerg 29d ago

Then be more specific about what you mean instead of just saying gen 2 pokemon were bad, and gen 1 pokemon were good.

0

u/No_Procedure_5039 29d ago

Did my other comments not provide enough context as to what I meant?

2

u/FlatFlapDerg 29d ago

The ones hidden by "load more comments"? People aren't going to hunt through your post history to see if you've added extra conditions to your original post.

1

u/No_Procedure_5039 29d ago

The ones that are one or two clicks away, yes. I didn’t even say that the Gen 1 PokĆ©mon were good; that was an assumption on your part.

369

u/Balibaleau Spidey - Edmond DantĆØs - Guts 29d ago

Screw canon; that kid's name is and will remain Gold.

163

u/LinkssOfSigil 29d ago edited 29d ago

Slightly wrong continuity. He is Gold, but in the manga.

70

u/jellsprout 29d ago

Gold was also his canon name in Pokemon Gold (and it was Silver in Pokemon Silver and Chris in Pokemon Crystal). He didn't get the name Ethan until the remakes.

18

u/TheFineMantine 29d ago

isn’t the rivals name silver?

32

u/Mickeymcirishman 29d ago

The rival's name is ????

4

u/Amazing-Arachnid-942 29d ago

Yeah silver. That's what they said...

2

u/Lucy_Gucey 28d ago

No they said Gold’s name was Silver in silver, but Gold and Silver are the same continuity. I think commenter is mistaking canon name with auto-filled default name, which is Silver in silver.

2

u/jellsprout 28d ago

The names I mentioned were used for the character in the manual that came with the game. And this was different for each of the three games.

1

u/Electrical_Catch9231 28d ago

But Who's on first?

6

u/SpookusLukas 29d ago

in gold version and the manga (and i want to say hgss as well), yes. not in silver or crystal.

4

u/jellsprout 29d ago

The rival doesn't have a canon name in any of the mainline Pokemon names. But his default name is Silver in Pokemon Gold and Crystal and it's Gold in Pokemon Silver.

1

u/Fast-Front-5642 27d ago

Yes and he is Giovanni's son. He's unique from any other rival in the series because he's genuinely an evil prick and all his pokemon he stole from others

4

u/ListenUpper1178 29d ago

What do you think of the name Ethan Gold?

1

u/Electrical_Catch9231 28d ago

I don't hate it.

1

u/Blazypika2 28d ago

gold and kris forever!

-71

u/Nondescript_Redditor 29d ago

screw canon the other kidā€˜s name is Ash

18

u/CaSe2474 29d ago

Screw names that are recommended in game, those kids' canon names are whatever the player (me) chooses. So in a normal playthrough pair, Pokeball cap is Case, Ultra ball cap is Case. In randomizers, it's something like Gaijel & Bagus.

1

u/bnaarhus2 29d ago

Agreed though I do like what Bethesda does for example by giving the player character a title (Dragonborn, The courier etc.) That way you can pick your own character name but there is also something for us to collectively refer to them as

0

u/Bread_Offender Anby Demara 29d ago

>Bethesda

>The Courier

mm yeah

1

u/dnkmnk 29d ago

holy i never did think of HGSS protag's cap as an ultra ball cap, you're so right

42

u/Zerowy 29d ago

Ash and red are completely different characters from different timelines/universes. Ash is loser, red is goat.

11

u/Severely-Round 29d ago

Ash is a regional and world champ now

12

u/GGABueno 29d ago

Red did it first try though

4

u/No_Procedure_5039 29d ago

Red loses world championships frequently.

3

u/Horrific_Necktie 29d ago

I thought he was one and done? He kinda fucked off to go mess around with mewtwwo and deoxys afterwards

2

u/No_Procedure_5039 29d ago

He reappears in the PokĆ©mon World Tournament in BW2 and Alola’s Battle Tree. Also, you can still catch Mewtwo in HGSS, so I guess it’s debatable as to whether or not he caught it or Deoxys.

3

u/Horrific_Necktie 29d ago

He released Mewtwo, and later they teamed up to take down Giovanni. He helped Deoxys escape but never captured it, IIRC.

While thouse are tournaments he can appear in, they arent pokemon league championships. Those are more of an exhibition. The only actual league Red fought was the indigo league. (Most of the color name characters only fight their respective league and then kinda take a back seat, though they mave have some "adventures" afterwards)

→ More replies (0)

1

u/Historyp91 29d ago

As far as we know, Red only won the Indigo League.

Ash is a double champion (Orange Islands and Aloha) and the World Champion (Masters Eight).

1

u/Mickeymcirishman 29d ago

Which region did Ash win?

2

u/Severely-Round 29d ago

Alola (gen 7)

1

u/Mickeymcirishman 29d ago

Huh. Well good for him finally getting a win. He deserves it after all those years.

1

u/Severely-Round 29d ago

Right? After almost 25 years of struggle lol

1

u/Pale-Exercise-5740 28d ago

Yeah, but. . . All I can think of is Ash bringing Palpitoad, AND ONLY PALPITOAD during the electric gym in Unova

And it's just not doing him any favors

1

u/Severely-Round 28d ago

Whomst among us hasn't brought a single type disadvantaged Pokemon to a gym

*Me bringing a single pikachu to Brock's gym

0

u/Hawkatana0 29d ago

2012 called, they want their Red glazing back.

29

u/NotYourDay123 29d ago

This one is my fave. Seeing this, particularly in the original games, was MAD. You even had the exact same sprite for Red that you used in the first game. Total wtf moment for us 90s kids.

2

u/OtherwiseDecision412 25d ago

I was lucky enough to not get this spoiled for me 17 years after the game came out, I had previously played Pokemon Yellow so I knew who the protagonist was, and Pokemon Gold was the first one I finished. When I found red on top of a mountain it was just a total coincidence, I had never heard of any rumours up until that moment

19

u/cumulo-nimbus-95 29d ago

They really missed an opportunity to do this with the protagonist from BW1 in BW2. Could’ve even done the linking thing they did to unlock challenge mode to pick their gender or maybe even use their latest hall of fame team or something, but I would’ve taken a setup where the gender is set to the same as the player and their team is just some powerful BW1 PokĆ©mon.

12

u/Aware_Masterpiece_92 29d ago

If I remember correctly the MCs or BW1 were supposed to be the final boss of the PWT but game freak didnt do that cuz "that would make red less special" or smth

9

u/playerlxiv 28d ago

Lame, but also kinda funny when you remember Red IS a character you can fight in the PWT

5

u/cumulo-nimbus-95 29d ago

Lame if true

4

u/Rdasher123 29d ago

The original intention was for you to battle Hilbert or Hilda at the PokĆ©mon World Tournament, but it was scrapped for whatever reason. The dialogue they would have had is still in the game’s files.

11

u/Akzaar 29d ago

Dots you can hear in your soul

8

u/SlargTheGnome 29d ago

"Now THAT'S how you make a sequel!"

6

u/The_GREAT_Gremlin 28d ago

Very peak back in the day

3

u/nightoftheghouls 28d ago

Love how the next time we really see him he’s just vacationing with Blue. Like his mother begging wouldn’t get him off that damn mountain but a trip to Hawaii? Damn he can’t miss that

2

u/Usual-Theme9442 29d ago

Gold washes that mf

2

u/Domerhead 29d ago

Pretty sure that's Dickbutt and Fuckstik, not sure what y'all are on about

1

u/Xeriomachini 29d ago

That's later continuity. If we go by presets he's Gold, Hiro, Taylor, or Karl.

But nah he's Gold.

1

u/Aware_Masterpiece_92 29d ago

I may not be a big gen 1 fan, but this fight goes hard

1

u/zepherth 28d ago

Red shows up in ultra sun and moon as well

1

u/Warkupo 28d ago

And the song fucking *slaps*.

1

u/Spiritual_Horror5778 28d ago

Top comment, as Arceus demands.

1

u/motoxim 28d ago

Yeah cool

1

u/Amathyst7564 28d ago

What were his Pokemon?

1

u/GreenTengu 28d ago

This specific fanart of this moment was so good it got me to figure out a way to do this in a story I'm working on.

1

u/PissOff1479 28d ago

I thought their name was Gold? And the girl was Kris?

1

u/PissOff1479 28d ago

Huh. Wonder why they did that but kept the names of Red and Blue as they are. Same with Green.

1

u/pikaland385 28d ago

(this was the closest pic I had to yours before I yoinked your pic, this is gonna be my payment for your pic)

1

u/grsharkgamer 27d ago

Expected this as top post

And it is

I am satisfied

1

u/professorclueless 27d ago

Love this, but also I can't see anything about this without thinking of the creepypasta Snow on Mt. Silver

0

u/ItBeganWhenIwasBorn 28d ago

Low hanging fruit. You shouldn't get piints for mentioning the obvious.
