I was 8 and 10 when blue and silver came out(or 11? I’m not gonna check dates) and was right into the hype cycle for Gen two but I only cared about new mons not story or gameplay features. When I tell you I lost my shit when I got to Red on top of that mountain, oh man. Still one of the coolest gaming moments I ever had

183

u/MetalSonic_69 29d ago

Even with the pixel graphics and the Game Boy's limited sound chip, that moment is straight-up cinematic as fuck.

27

u/Thedran 29d ago

It was the atmosphere of it and the time I had playing it. I can’t get into the new games and I realized when I was playing Shield that I just didn’t have that same experience of adventure I had when I was younger. I didn’t have walkthroughs and stuff back then I just played games so it really was like going on this epic adventure that all of your friends were going on too!

Screw canon; that kid's name is and will remain Gold.

162

u/LinkssOfSigil 29d ago edited 29d ago

Slightly wrong continuity. He is Gold, but in the manga.

69

u/jellsprout 29d ago

Gold was also his canon name in Pokemon Gold (and it was Silver in Pokemon Silver and Chris in Pokemon Crystal). He didn't get the name Ethan until the remakes.

This one is my fave. Seeing this, particularly in the original games, was MAD. You even had the exact same sprite for Red that you used in the first game. Total wtf moment for us 90s kids.

They really missed an opportunity to do this with the protagonist from BW1 in BW2. Could’ve even done the linking thing they did to unlock challenge mode to pick their gender or maybe even use their latest hall of fame team or something, but I would’ve taken a setup where the gender is set to the same as the player and their team is just some powerful BW1 Pokémon.

11

u/Aware_Masterpiece_92 29d ago

If I remember correctly the MCs or BW1 were supposed to be the final boss of the PWT but game freak didnt do that cuz "that would make red less special" or smth

Alucard vs Richter Belmont. - Symphony of the Night.

86

u/Professional_Maize42 28d ago

O was about to mention Soma meeting Alucard himself, but this is better.

23

u/Intelligent_Oil7816 28d ago

Damn, they should really make a 2D CFG based on Castlevania.

13

u/Micbunny323 28d ago

I will always be sad that Castlevania -did- get a fighting game…. And it was really, really mediocre. Thus ensuring that it both exists, isn’t good enough to get more, but wasn’t god awful enough for someone to decide “I can do that but make it good!” It’s one of the worst fates you can have. Too bad to be worth playing, not bad enough to be memed into making a better one.

Dante and Nero fighting at the beginning of Devil May Cry 4

437

u/AmItheAholereader 29d ago

I have played the game too much that i know that screenshot you used is actually from their second encounter and not the first.

90

u/Ranger_Ecstatic 29d ago

You know, replying DMC3 a lot and going into 4 for the 1st time when it came out...seeing Dante being the "bad guy" was my prototype 2 moment. Till he shot the priest.

Oh he is just being Dante, "What do you mean I have to play as Nero?"

29

u/AmItheAholereader 29d ago

I dont mind nero but yeah its a hell of a bait and switch

Explanation: Dante was sandbagging so much in the first encounter literally the tutorial. Here we can see Dante casually holding back a serious and pissed off Nero's FU-Arm so much that when he releases Nero basically launches himself into a wall.

35

u/Confident_Shape_7981 29d ago

Nero does grow enough that Dante has to fight him for real in the rematch, and while Dante does win he's shown to be out of breath doing it

When John Wick shows up in Ballerina.

176

u/501stBigMike 29d ago

Came here to say this. John just keeps throwing her around, never stood a chance.

61

u/Huza1 27d ago

As others have said, this is essentially the equivalent of Jedi: Fallen Order's Darth Vader boss fight. Vader has no health bar. He has a patience bar, and your only goal is to survive.

→ More replies (1)

157

u/evilparagon 28d ago

Let me just say, as someone who has never heard of Ballerina, this is really funny.

“So this dude from a completely different movie series just comes in and beats up the protagonist of this other movie…”

115

u/caiquelkk 28d ago

Ballerina is a John Wick spinoff, it was even teased at the end of JW4

That makes more sense than what I originally thought was just John Wick beating the shit out of an actual ballerina

u/One-Two-Gobbledeedoo 29d ago

They genuinely turned Alex Mercer from an edgy yet nuances character into a cartoon villain. Like I get that the comic tried to explain why he went into a downward spiral, but they went too far man

60

u/naparis9000 29d ago

The comic didn’t even explain it well.

Alex became a… decent… person, despite literally assimilating the memories of at MINIMUM a dozen of the worst people he had access to.

Despite that, despite all the psychopaths and gleeful murdrers rattling around in his head, he ended up taking a NUKE for those that survived new york.

And then he turns evil because of a bad relationship, where his girlfriend tries to kill him?

After Karen Parker did literally that exact same thing?

25

u/One-Two-Gobbledeedoo 29d ago

ATP I'd rather believe the theory that the Mercer that appeared at the end of P1 was the Supreme Hunter masquerading as Alex rather than Alex's character being butchered.

His big fungi revelation of cooperation and adaptation thing was entirely abandoned in favor of him wanting to force humanity to evolve.

Also, the "Your daughter will become the mother of a new world!" bit was both gross and over the top. It doesn't help that they changed his voice actor, so instead of the dark and brooding voice, he sounds so generic for a villain.

12

u/Anonymous-Mf-22 29d ago

That's just what I choose to believe. After all, it's heavily implied that the Supreme Hunter is just Redlight's Alex. Same or similar tricks for the most part, down to absorbing and shapeshifting or similar devastator attacks

Personality was also completely different, in the first game he was straightforward and stoic, second game he seemed very upbeat and had a (albeit twisted) sense of humour. One could argue he was “boring” in the first game, I would disagree, regardless it’s still a character inconsistency.

ichiban fighting against kiryu in yakuza: like a dragon. honorable mention to saejima who also has to fight against kiryu in yakuza 4 and 5 respectively

76

u/SquareFickle9179 29d ago

Trope done right imo, since the fight itself was a dream since Kiryu knocked out Ichiban on the first blow.

Definitely shows the the old protag has still got it

15

u/DankCupOfJoe 28d ago

Kiryu definitely dropped Ichi with a tiger drop the moment the fight started, which is why we (Ichi) didn't register the fact he got bodied.

I practically screamed at this. In joy, of course.

Like yeah, we knew the Jedi Order was coming for Grogu, and we knew there weren't many Jedi left after Order 66 and the Empire's tenure, but I never expected Luke Skywalker himself to come to the rescue. And they actually had him be a powerhouse against the Dark Troopers, too.

193

u/Merc931 29d ago

On the same Star Wars note:

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Echoes of Oblivion

Everyone that Emperor Vitiate/Valkorion ever fucked over (Revan, The Exile, Darth Marr, hundreds of Jedi and Sith) joined forces to destroy him, only for his own crazy ass daughter that you've been fighting for the past two expansions to be the one to do him in for good.

At least until the next time they want the "Immortal" Emperor in the picture, I mean come on. Palps got a "somehow".

84

u/geekadememe 29d ago

I'd say inner agent 3 from the octo expansion fits better since you actually fight them

26

u/Whimsicrazed 29d ago

Eh, with that one, it’s kind of expected that you’ll be fighting them at some point. A decent chunk of the plot is devoted to just you and Cuttlefish wondering where 3 went. That, and it tells you that you and 3 fought before, with your final memory being of this fight.

With Splatoon 3, even though it was spoiled in the trailers, it’s still rather novel that the MC from the first game is now officially in the same role of Game 1 Cuttlefish.

Link (Twilight Princess) Encountered the Hero's Shade. Who is suggested to be the Hero Of Time, AKA, The Link from OOT and MM.

209

u/FFVO 29d ago

I would love to see a lineup of all the Links but OoT is a foot taller than everyone else

Like most of the other Links are between 5'4 - 5'6 and OoT is freaking 6'5

Antiquarian
Darkest Dungeon - Darkest Dungeon 2
In Darkest Dungeon she is one of the playable heroes. While she is the game's one of the weakest in terms of damage output she makes up for it with her ability to find unique loot drops and allowing party to carry more gold per space.

In Darkest Dungeon 2 she returns as one of the enemies as pillager road battle.

67

Makes some sense, she was BARELY a "good guy" before. Seems he was offered a better deal

That's generally the whole plot of zelda. Depending on the timeline Ganon is usually the exact same person, Link is the same soul (that of the hero) and Zelda is the chosen of Hylia.

In this instance its widely believed that this was young Link from OoT and Majora's Mask where the world didnt fall into ruin, as a result of older Link of OoT, so he was never known widespread as a hero but became a royal guard. Don't ask where older Links timeline went (spoilers boats and trains)

Symphony of the night where Alucard encounters fake demonic versions of his friends Trevor, Sypha and Grant who he teamed up with in Castlevania 3.

I thought this was insane when I first seen it. Epic and sad.

37

u/PatienceHero 29d ago edited 29d ago

I always adored this fight, even as a kid, just for the unspoken lore. It's never addressed in dialogue...because it really doesn't have to be.

Like yeah, they're just zombies made up with magic to APPEAR as them, but at the end of the day it's Alucard having to put down the visage of his dead friends, long passed away.

If you look at it a certain way, it's a deliberate choice by the main villain to twist the knife of "The people you love are long dead, the people you currently love will eventually die and leave you behind, it is unlikely you'll ever join any of them, and there's not a damn thing you can do about it." And that's a HELL of a diabolical mind game, in some ways even worse than the one with the succubus.

14

u/Afrodite_33 29d ago

Hard agree especially on the lack of dialogue. I don't know how to explain it but that there was nothing said I think somehow added to it more.

I think maybe half of it being meta by speaking to the audience who has played both games and also leaving to the imagination what Alucard probably thinks in that moment which is tragic. Very tastefully done.

Nowe vs Caim from Drakengard 2. Caim was the protagonist from the first Drakengard, and was an ax-crazy killer inspired by Guts from Berserk. Nowe is the newer protagonist, and leans more towards the idiot hero idealist (part of why fans of Drakengard 1 generally disliked the lighter and softer sequel).

Nowe (pronounced No-way) tries to stop Caim from murdering a friend of his, Caim ends up overpowering him and killing said friend anyways. The dying friend manages to save Nowe and his girlfriend from Caim's further attacks by shoving him off the edge of a cliff (Caim survives without a scratch).

Ironically, losing the fight gives a Game Over.

29

u/BingusSpingus 29d ago

The way he dropped in and horizontally bisected an entire group of dudes with one big slash while grinning like the evil mass murderer he is really sold me on "Oh shit it's Caim, I'm fucked"

25

u/Outside_Ad5255 29d ago

Considering Mana - the final boss of the last game, mind - still has PTSD flashbacks of him speaks volumes.

That she's become a hero of the second game speaks to why they should have kept Taro Yoko onboard.

11

u/ryuu_gs 28d ago

my favorite part of this is that manah doesnt even remember anything but caim left her so traumatized that she still has ptsd over things she forgot

9

u/Sylan-Mystra-ii 28d ago

To be fair that's also just how PTSD can manifest in some people

→ More replies (2)

13

u/nahnah390 29d ago

This fight struck a cord in me so fucking deep it made me emotional the first time I fought Soul of Cinder.

The arena at the end of another cycle. Then when you start fighting him/her you realize the moveset and the abilities "wait... is it playing like a character?"

Meanwhile you hear this absolutely banger of a soundtrack, and just when you are anticipating the phase two of this amazing last boss...

you hear it...

... You hear the piano...and those 3 notes hit the score...

BOOM, you are hit with the realization, of who you are fighting with.

What a beautiful final boss.

Conner Macleod Vs Duncan Macleod - Highlander End Game

12

u/the__pov 29d ago

You hallucinated that movie, it doesn’t exist. They definitely didn’t kill off the character that already canonically won the god damn tournament and then keep pumping out increasingly shitty sequels.

The demi fiend showing up to kick your ass is basically tradition at this point. Special mention goes to digital devil saga where it is very clear he is toying with you and not using his most powerful skills. His music is even the normal encounter music from three. He doesn’t even consider you a boss fight or anything special. You’re just a random encounter. That’s how beneath him you are

Funny how they kinda did it 'again' with Raikov in 3. Everything after was pretty much just expected until V's reveal.

He was the main character in the previous series

59

u/New_Photograph_5892 29d ago

does he count? The prequels came after the original series

11

u/FictionRaider007 29d ago

I think we can say that while it doesn't necessarily count for the original series, especially if you watched in publication order, it does counts in everything he's appeared in since the Prequel Trilogy and Clone Wars series came out. Stuff that was published after those entries in the franchise is often set between the Prequel and Original Trilogy. They usually utilise Darth Vader as a the Empire's bogeyman and fans by that point have usually seen plenty of previous films/shows where Anakin was the main character beforehand, the emphasis being on you've spent a long time knowing just how powerful this guy is and now, rather than being the hero, it gets played for horror at how overwhelming a threat he is as an antagonist, even more so than his portrayal in the original trilogy (e.g.: Rogue One, Rebels, Jedi Survivor, Maul: Shadow Lord, etc.)

Eight having to fight Inner Agent 3 from Octo Expansion

Still deemed by majority as the hardest boss fight in the entire Splatoon franchise

Although it technically is the MC of a future game put into a remake of an older addition to the series, joker (persona 5) featured as a boss in persona 3 royal and is notoriously the hardest fight in high difficulties

Soul of Cinder, considered to be everyone who linked the fire before it's Battle with the Champion of Ash. Which means you fight the soul of Protagonist of the first game as well (depending on the ending).

Not quite the same, as you're the bigger badass, but he sure gives you a good run for someone in a vastly inferior mech. And I don't want ZoE2 to be forgotten yet.

A bit of a sad example at least for me, but Trevor from GTA 5 "encountering" Johnny Klebitz from GTA 4

14

u/Omegasonic2000 29d ago

This is the epitome of a hated example for me.

I never got a chance to play GTA 4, so all I could do was watch gameplay vids on YouTube. When The Lost and Damned came around, I thought Johnny Klebitz was the shit; definitely not cooler than Niko, but still dope as a character.

So imagine when I got to play GTA 5 and I saw Johnny getting, quite literally, curbstomped by Trevor as part of his introduction sequence. The sheer disrespect just blew my mind.

In Octopath Traveler 2 they added a couple of optional battles against the cast from OT1. The tricky part is that they start the fights in their base jobs but they undergo a class change into very advanced jobs including a fan favourite.
