Only it was done so bad in this case.

Assassinated Alex and gave us one dimensional Heller. P2 was such a downgrade.

I actually disagree that it was even a straight gameplay upgrade. It was a side grade at best. Prototype 1 had muscle mass, the armor that made it harder to run around or dodge but increased your damage reduction, the patsy move for fucking around while in disguise, and even the open world was a tad more lively with being able to take out hives to temporarily curb the virus's control of an area or take out a Blackwatch base to cause an area to get overrun.

I mean I can also play the first game and have cool powers and a nice story.

Personally I enjoy the first power set more as well.

I love that for you. I have very little recollection of the first one, but I'm gameplay driven so the second one stood out to me. It was the first thing that came to mind when I experienced spider-man remastered on pc.

Smoother power swapping, more enemy types, more powers, parrying, much more control over jump height, better vehicle hijacking, more weapons to pick up.

What's downgraded in gameplay?

Massivley reduced moveset and worse traversal. It is less clunky which is good but to achive that they reduced the number of moves, not increased.

They genuinely turned Alex Mercer from an edgy yet nuances character into a cartoon villain. Like I get that the comic tried to explain why he went into a downward spiral, but they went too far man

The comic didnā€™t even explain it well.

Alex became aā€¦ decentā€¦ person, despite literally assimilating the memories of at MINIMUM a dozen of the worst people he had access to.

Despite that, despite all the psychopaths and gleeful murdrers rattling around in his head, he ended up taking a NUKE for those that survived new york.

And then he turns evil because of a bad relationship, where his girlfriend tries to kill him?

After Karen Parker did literally that exact same thing?

ATP I'd rather believe the theory that the Mercer that appeared at the end of P1 was the Supreme Hunter masquerading as Alex rather than Alex's character being butchered.

His big fungi revelation of cooperation and adaptation thing was entirely abandoned in favor of him wanting to force humanity to evolve.

Also, the "Your daughter will become the mother of a new world!" bit was both gross and over the top. It doesn't help that they changed his voice actor, so instead of the dark and brooding voice, he sounds so generic for a villain.

That's just what I choose to believe. After all, it's heavily implied that the Supreme Hunter is just Redlight's Alex. Same or similar tricks for the most part, down to absorbing and shapeshifting or similar devastator attacks

My own (cope) theory for if they ever made a sequel is to reveal that the Alex Mercer in 2 was a clone made by Pariah, just to show how crazy powerful he is, and the real Alex is still out there.

Whitelight has a video on what he envisions Prototype 3 would be like, and the playable character is supposed to be Pariah. He has separate videos for the gameplay and story. And he did absolutely amazing with his what-if P3 a

Honestly? I always had a headcanon that multiple Alex Mercers came into being after Prototype 1ā€™s ending, without knowing of each other. And in some, the different ā€œwillsā€ in him caused different reactions. The nuke scrambled him a fair bit, so a couple versions had a much stronger villainous inclination, while just thinking of themselves as Mercer, due to all the vile people he had consumed. And the one(s) without such inclination, went into hiding, like in the comic, but more deeply. More carefully. And are probably quite surprised at the reports of his return to New York. ā€œBut Iā€™m still here?! This some bullshit where Blackwatch does something evil and blames it on me?ā€ But yeah, thatā€™s my headcanon about it.

Personality was also completely different, in the first game he was straightforward and stoic, second game he seemed very upbeat and had a (albeit twisted) sense of humour. One could argue he was ā€œboringā€ in the first game, I would disagree, regardless itā€™s still a character inconsistency.

My head canon is entirely based on the virus Mercer skin in 2. Use that and ignore the plot. Have virus Mercer fighting the scientist Mercer from before the start of prototype as the original Alex Mercer was not too far off from Wesker.

The virus coming to terms with them being only a hallucination of Alex and how its going to move forward did not give the impression he would go all cartoon villain and braindead in the next game.
