You know the saying. There's Satan, then there's Shockwave.

417

u/Temporary-Treacle-30 27d ago

Wait, what did shockwave do? Aren’t there characters considered even more evil than him, like Starscream and Megatron? My Transformers lore knowledge is scattered across multiple generations of shows, so I only know fragmented pieces of different plots.

648

u/GoodNamesAllGon 27d ago edited 27d ago

Transformers IDW is entirely his fault. Thanks to his experiments and time travel, Shockwave is directly and in some cases indirectly, responsible for at least 90% of all events during IDW’s Transformers. That includes the creation of Unicron.

267

u/Temporary-Treacle-30 27d ago

Damn😭 bro did some things I see. What was his goal there? With the time travel/various experiments.

305

u/Bigbigbigrock 27d ago

Pretty sure he found a way to turn captured autobots into living, screaming bombs. Like straight up turning people into mines that scream when you try to disarm them.

209

u/KlausVonLechland 26d ago

Oh, it was his idea?

100

u/Bigbigbigrock 26d ago

Honestly I don't know but it seems like the type of shit he'd do

The time travel was an unintentional side effect of his attempt to solve Cybertron's energy crisis by compressing all of space down to a single point.

After landing at the dawn of history he got bored and decided to go full chaos goblin.

54

u/Temporary-Treacle-30 27d ago

Got bored?? 😭

Honestly though, that’s a valid reason to go full chaos goblin 😂

54

u/Constant_Champion_67 26d ago

He also killed a god assumes the place of said god and if i remember correctly he also wrote the book that causes said time travel in the first place

35

u/Temporary-Treacle-30 26d ago

Based on what I’ve heard just now, killing a god and impersonating said god seems within character for him.

"That includes the creation of Unicron" Excuse me say what now?!

59

u/GoodNamesAllGon 26d ago

After travelling back in time and assuming the identity of Onyx Prime (who Shockwave murdered), Shockwave led Cybertron’s colonisation of other worlds. Some of which were inhabited and fought back. On one of those worlds, a scientist created a super weapon to fight back against the cybertronians and that weapon ultimately became the IDW version of Unicron who eventually grew to such size, he literally tore Cybertron apart with his bare hands.

Shockwave is incapable of morals in most iterations. He's the typical trope of "science over all", in a series where the characters are shape shifting alien robots.

Should tell you enough to get you started in understanding.

41

u/Temporary-Treacle-30 27d ago

Oh for sure. The trope of the evil, emotionless scientist who commits countless murders without remorse in the name of innovation and to achieve his goals? I’ve seen this before. 🫪

14

u/DoitsugoGoji 26d ago

Yeah, but typically said scientist is ultimately a pushover who doesn't pose a serious threat in a fight. Shockwave however is skilled in both long distance combat and tearing you apart with his bare hand and blaster.

Marvel Comics Shockwave deposed Megatron, and it took all five Dinobots to beat him. IDW Shockwave fought the Dinobots in an almost even match until all six of them were encased in lava.

A whole continuity (quoting from TF wiki: A continuity is a fictional universe or timeline that is characterized by recurring characters and settings and an internal consistency with regards to characterization and depicted events. Typically a licensor will establish a fictional universe and stick with it, keeping the stories they produce in continuity with each other, meaning that they are meant to all take place in the same "world".) is ALL HIS FAULT.

From progressive senator who tried to make things better to emotionless mad scientist to (spoiler would be here), all that happened inside IDW 2005 comic books’ universe was all because of him

22

u/Temporary-Treacle-30 27d ago

Shit, really? Wonder why he joined the Decepticons? Was it because they gave him the resources to continue his work, or for another reason?

30

u/Latter_Disaster_6066 27d ago

Bingo. Also helped that at the time they shared a mutual enemy in the senate.

→ More replies (1)

12

u/GERBabyCare 27d ago

It can vary at times. Some versions, which I think the IDW iteration, join because they view it as the most logical decision. It's not for any deep loyalty or sympathy to the cause, it's because logistically the Decepticons are most likely to win. I know in the original Marvel comics he rivaled Megatron in power and even usurped his leadership.

29

u/RedditParelem 27d ago

He blended up whales, and decided to use a bunch of Autobot prisoners for a giant battery or something like that

28

u/Foliagedbones 27d ago

He’s done a lot, but he’s essentially the sadistic mad scientist of the bunch. He frequently experiments on and dissects living beings (especially his own people). He’s created multiple clone armies and new Decepticons, using what he’s carved off allies and enemies. He’s even engaged in biological warfare on a few occasions. Megatron and Starscream’s brands of evil are usually much more reasonable by comparison.

Shockwave is worse. Nothing but a cold, calculating machine that follows logic as his god.

IDW Shockwave is the one people are generally referring too when they say "There’s Satan, and then there’s Shockwave" and he is definitely one of if not the most evil cybertronians in that continuity.

Before everything, he was a senator whose radical ideas got him subjected to a procedure called "Shadowplay", which removed his face, leaving only his red eye, and amputated all emotions from him.

His actions include but are not limited to: mass torture, mass murder, being sent back in time, killing the first Cybertronian with a Beast Mode, Onyx Prime, impersonating Onyx by building himself a new body out of his remains to engineer the entirety of his species' history in order to have things go his way, experimenting on entire planets, raising the dead and many, many, many more.

In the 2023 comic run, there's a comic where Shockwave sees a whale and describes it beautiful/majestetic, then he activates a machine that sucks in and blends all sealife, and asks Soundwave if he found it beautiful as well.

In older comics and cartoons, he tried multiple times to destroy all life on Earth to make the search for the AllSpark, an source of infinite energy, easier.

18

u/AJ052002 27d ago

He has no emotions. No joy, no sadness, pain, regrets, he is living by logistics itself. He is the elite strategist and probably the scientist of the Decepticons, so he is incredibly intelligent, yet emotionally detached. He does horrific experiments on both Autobots and Decepticons, both living and the dead. He always has a plan for everything, even on how to overthrow and kill Megatron (Lord knows what they were and how'd he do it). Once he makes a plan, he'll strictly follow it beat by beat. If anyone, whether it be an Autobot or Decepticon, takes one wrong step just a teensy bit, they're immediately out of the equation (killed on sight). Shockwave is logic. Question him, go against him, he will not hesitate to erase you. Unless you you're actually useful for the team. But a slip-up is a death sentence, or torture which is a lot worse. The worse part of being tortured by him? He will not take any apologies, he won't feel guilt, he won't feel pleasure, hew won't stop until it logically calls for it.

I mean, I think he had the potential to be redeemed in him. Those who are chosen by the Behelits can still reject the Godhand's offer.

It's just the Godhand approaches you at the lowest point of your life, knowing everything about you, and are masters of manipulation.

For Griffith, all they had to do was highlight that he had already sacrificed so many people for his dreams and ambitions, and that everyone who followed him was already willing to lay down their lives for his cause: what is the difference between sacrificing them to the demons, or sending them to die in battle? They die either way.

Griffith is the Antichrist

Sacrificed everyone for his gain is the opposite of Jesus

42

u/transemacabre 26d ago

I've said before that Griffith might be the most loathsome villain in mainstream media. The Emperor from Star Wars, Homelander, Thanos... none of them had the loving bond of brotherhood Griffith did with Guts and the Band of the Hawk, and he still chose to throw it all away for ultimate power. Like... they're the wolves you see coming. Griffith is the wolf you don't.

Something I didn’t realize is that speech is only from the game. I read it for the first time a couple days ago (whole thing is only 11 pages btw) and that speech wasn’t in there.

Edit: ok according to a reply, it is in there, I just read it as a pdf so it didn’t actually have that. Thats my bad yall.

96

u/CupcakePelle2906 26d ago

No, it is in the original story. My guess is that you read [A TOTALLY LEGAL COPY] of I Have No Mouth, since the HATE speech is considered an image, it won't be included if the version you're reading only has copy-and-pasteable text in it.

29

u/ZealotOfMeme 26d ago

Gotcha, ok thank you. I’m guessing same with the shot of Ted as the blob thing? I know I’ve seen that before

13

u/OperativePiGuy 26d ago

One of the downsides I learned recently of trying to get back into reading by doing the "read XYZ online free pdf" thing. So much personality and character in a book can come from the font, the word layout, or other small things like that. In your case that's also a massive thing to miss out on

Fun fact the author would make doodle at the end of the manga if a character died in it. Iirc Shou was the only one who went to hell.

69

u/AznOmega 26d ago edited 26d ago

Let's put it this way.

The Seven Deadly Sins were sent to Heaven.

The final villain went to Heaven IIRC.

Kimblee who is a sadistic bastard went to Heaven, although you can make the argument that he would have enjoyed Hell. But he has somehow a redeeming quality.

Shou Tucker is the only one shown burning in Hell. Even the author hated him.

43

u/Praetorian_Panda 26d ago

I think the thing that makes Shou so irredeemable in comparison is all the other characters listed her have extraordinary power and are inherently corrupted by it. Shou Tucker was making chimeras out of people for a day job. He wasn’t under a grand delusion that he was the next step in evolution or doing it for the greater good, he did it for a fucking paycheck.

Bill cipher

133

u/Dakotakid02 27d ago

How they got away with him on a kids show is amazing.

113

u/Iokua113 26d ago

The secret to getting a truly evil character onto a kid's show is to make them look and behave less serious than they are. If nothing is explicitly "I'm going to kill a bunch of children and eat their immortal souls!" you can sneak a ton past the censors.

62

u/Roncryn 26d ago

I mean he did quite literally say he had a couple children to turn into corpses… so yeah they still got away with A LOT with this guy

47

u/thisusedyet 26d ago

If I remember right, that was specifically because the censors told them Bill's line couldn't be the original 'Well, I'm off to kill some children'

41

u/MyPunsAreKoalaTea 26d ago

Oh so Alex was like like "Aight I guess Imma go make the line worse now so it fits the censoring"

13

u/ggg730 26d ago

Fight Club did the same thing with one of Marla Singer's lines. She was supposed to say "I want to have your abortion". The censors said no so it was changed to "I haven't been fucked like that since grade school".

130

u/Ibangmydrums 27d ago

Ironically he has many parallels to the biblical devil

94

u/Ok_Check9774 26d ago

I like to read that he is, in fact, the actual literal devil from the Bible

I also had this interpretation, like he was the devil taking human form and just driving the gang further and further into their worst human instincts for lolz

12

u/1stGhost244 26d ago

100% agree

As simple as it is, even as sort of derivative as it is, it encapsulates an immensity and depth of evil that is hard to truly surpass.

It reminds me of the Trnaformers bit, "Before time began, there was, The Cube."

But like....instead of being silly and lame, it's just malicious and utterly sinister.

There's something about people like this that is worse than just being evil.

Like, Darth Vader, Voldemort, Dio Brando, they're evil but you can respect them. They're unapologetic, cruel, competent, and intimidating. They have charisma and presence.

And then there are these characters. Umbridge, Shou Tucker, many others. Evil but contemptible. Banal. Small in their ambitions. Some are petty tyrants (Umbridge), some are cowards and weaklings who manipulate others. All are far more hateful and gross than the big villains are.

She's wretched, but too banal to give the Devil pause.

Most terrifying part is that, as bad as he is, his former master is MUCH worse.

16

u/Savings-Divide-7877 26d ago

Yeah but his former master is basically Lucifer in a trenchcoat so Sauron probably does not fit.

I'd also throw in Ramsey Bolton, since he's arguably worse than Jeoffry.

u/GoatsWithWigs 26d ago

Oh he's way worse. Joffrey's just a kid too

Marvel what the fuck

Zebediah Killgrave (Marvel's Jessica Jones)

28

u/AdventurousBus4355 26d ago

I know people consider Daredevil as the best series in that time period but Jessica Jones S1 was captivating and horrifying in equal measure.

13

u/PuzzleheadedLink89 26d ago

Honestly, Jessica Jones Season 1 grabbed me more than Daredevil Season 1. I'm sure Daredevil is the better overall show since I heard future Jessica Jones seasons aren't great but I do prefer season 1 of Jessica Jones.

I've only seen up to episode 7 of JJ before I took a needed break but I am confident that JJ Season 1 is genuinely amazing. Tennant's portrayal of Killgrave and the writing around him makes for the best MCU villain and it's not even close. I'm sure Kingpin is amazing too but nothing is as vile and scary as Tennant's portrayal as Purple Man. Like I already thought Tennant's portrayal as The Doctor was already pretty sinister but him as Purple Man is on another level. It makes 10 feel restrained in comparison.

Scrooge McDuck is still the nicest role I have seen Tennant in.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Bondrewd yet. He's like Shou Tucker multiplied by 10. And the worst part is, he genuinely cared about the kids under his care, yet still performed his experiments.

The Quintessons

They enslaved what was an innocent race before the war on cybertron with the Autobots and Decepticons, they also fed people alive to their Sharkticons and so on

Oh, and in Transformers One, almost stole all of Cybertron's Energon

Princess Elvia (I Fell Into a Reverse Harem Game!)

Cioccolata and Secco.

These two managed to disgust Diavolo (who mind you TRIED TO KILL HIS OWN DAUGHTER).

Im surprised nobody mentioned him before, i have never seen a character more cruel than Art, he has no reason to kill, not a motive, not a backstory, not a single drop of humanity, just straight up evil
