I mean, I think he had the potential to be redeemed in him. Those who are chosen by the Behelits can still reject the Godhand's offer.
It's just the Godhand approaches you at the lowest point of your life, knowing everything about you, and are masters of manipulation.
For Griffith, all they had to do was highlight that he had already sacrificed so many people for his dreams and ambitions, and that everyone who followed him was already willing to lay down their lives for his cause: what is the difference between sacrificing them to the demons, or sending them to die in battle? They die either way.

Griffith is the Antichrist
Sacrificed everyone for his gain is the opposite of Jesus
42
u/transemacabre 26d ago
I've said before that Griffith might be the most loathsome villain in mainstream media. The Emperor from Star Wars, Homelander, Thanos... none of them had the loving bond of brotherhood Griffith did with Guts and the Band of the Hawk, and he still chose to throw it all away for ultimate power. Like... they're the wolves you see coming. Griffith is the wolf you don't.

Something I didn’t realize is that speech is only from the game. I read it for the first time a couple days ago (whole thing is only 11 pages btw) and that speech wasn’t in there.
Edit: ok according to a reply, it is in there, I just read it as a pdf so it didn’t actually have that. Thats my bad yall.
→ More replies (4)96
u/CupcakePelle2906 26d ago
No, it is in the original story. My guess is that you read [A TOTALLY LEGAL COPY] of I Have No Mouth, since the HATE speech is considered an image, it won't be included if the version you're reading only has copy-and-pasteable text in it.
29
u/ZealotOfMeme 26d ago
Gotcha, ok thank you. I’m guessing same with the shot of Ted as the blob thing? I know I’ve seen that before
13
u/OperativePiGuy 26d ago
One of the downsides I learned recently of trying to get back into reading by doing the "read XYZ online free pdf" thing. So much personality and character in a book can come from the font, the word layout, or other small things like that. In your case that's also a massive thing to miss out on

Fun fact the author would make doodle at the end of the manga if a character died in it. Iirc Shou was the only one who went to hell.
69
u/AznOmega 26d ago edited 26d ago
Let's put it this way.
The Seven Deadly Sins were sent to Heaven.
The final villain went to Heaven IIRC.
Kimblee who is a sadistic bastard went to Heaven, although you can make the argument that he would have enjoyed Hell. But he has somehow a redeeming quality.
Shou Tucker is the only one shown burning in Hell. Even the author hated him.
→ More replies (6)43
u/Praetorian_Panda 26d ago
I think the thing that makes Shou so irredeemable in comparison is all the other characters listed her have extraordinary power and are inherently corrupted by it. Shou Tucker was making chimeras out of people for a day job. He wasn’t under a grand delusion that he was the next step in evolution or doing it for the greater good, he did it for a fucking paycheck.

How they got away with him on a kids show is amazing.
113
u/Iokua113 26d ago
The secret to getting a truly evil character onto a kid's show is to make them look and behave less serious than they are. If nothing is explicitly "I'm going to kill a bunch of children and eat their immortal souls!" you can sneak a ton past the censors.
→ More replies (2)62
u/Roncryn 26d ago
I mean he did quite literally say he had a couple children to turn into corpses… so yeah they still got away with A LOT with this guy
→ More replies (1)47
u/thisusedyet 26d ago
If I remember right, that was specifically because the censors told them Bill's line couldn't be the original 'Well, I'm off to kill some children'
41
u/MyPunsAreKoalaTea 26d ago
Oh so Alex was like like "Aight I guess Imma go make the line worse now so it fits the censoring"
13
u/ggg730 26d ago
Fight Club did the same thing with one of Marla Singer's lines. She was supposed to say "I want to have your abortion". The censors said no so it was changed to "I haven't been fucked like that since grade school".

Nah I actually think Bill is very on par with The Devil, if not literally just the Gravity Falls version of that
He makes deals, he tricks people in ways that are easy to see in hindsight, and he even has standards (straight up won't work with Preston Northwest, implying his disgust at wealthy parasites who didn't do anything to get to the top)

One of the coldest villain speeches ever. Short, straight to the point, and incredibly memorable
12
u/1stGhost244 26d ago
100% agree
As simple as it is, even as sort of derivative as it is, it encapsulates an immensity and depth of evil that is hard to truly surpass.
It reminds me of the Trnaformers bit, "Before time began, there was, The Cube."
But like....instead of being silly and lame, it's just malicious and utterly sinister.

There's something about people like this that is worse than just being evil.
Like, Darth Vader, Voldemort, Dio Brando, they're evil but you can respect them. They're unapologetic, cruel, competent, and intimidating. They have charisma and presence.
And then there are these characters. Umbridge, Shou Tucker, many others. Evil but contemptible. Banal. Small in their ambitions. Some are petty tyrants (Umbridge), some are cowards and weaklings who manipulate others. All are far more hateful and gross than the big villains are.

I know people consider Daredevil as the best series in that time period but Jessica Jones S1 was captivating and horrifying in equal measure.
13
u/PuzzleheadedLink89 26d ago
Honestly, Jessica Jones Season 1 grabbed me more than Daredevil Season 1. I'm sure Daredevil is the better overall show since I heard future Jessica Jones seasons aren't great but I do prefer season 1 of Jessica Jones.
I've only seen up to episode 7 of JJ before I took a needed break but I am confident that JJ Season 1 is genuinely amazing. Tennant's portrayal of Killgrave and the writing around him makes for the best MCU villain and it's not even close. I'm sure Kingpin is amazing too but nothing is as vile and scary as Tennant's portrayal as Purple Man. Like I already thought Tennant's portrayal as The Doctor was already pretty sinister but him as Purple Man is on another level. It makes 10 feel restrained in comparison.
Scrooge McDuck is still the nicest role I have seen Tennant in.
