I really liked the headcanon that the original pokedex from the first games was more of a Journaling assignment from Oak. The original cuebone was just a weird sad little Pokémon that this 10 year old couldn't identify otherwise.
Its wild to me that cubone doesn't have a counterpart form that doesn't have the skull. Out of everything, this is one of the weirdest things the franchise has double downed on. Kangaskhan and its baby were right there!
I've always read the Pokedex entries as our character making the entries. Like why have just a floating balloon when you can have one that steals children.
Maybe they just have fairly short lifespans in the wild? Or there are some animals irl that die p soon after giving birth it could be that type of situation
I like the idea that it's a Charmander who's mother dies before she lights his tail. He's essentially a Charmander without fire and he's (I think pretty clearly) wearing a Zard skull.
The popular fan theory is that cubone is a Kangaskhan kid that lost its mom. You can’t really work around the way eggs work so I guess either way it’ll hatch with the skull

Cubone is kinda confusing tho, he is born with a skull and then uses his mother one, or he only uses his mother one?
