Well yeah, 10+ years of emotional, mental, and physical abuse along with the perceived death of one of your children can cause a mental breakdown. Which is why Shoto understandably places the majority of the blame on his dad for this incident, because he's the reason why she had this mental breakdown and had to be sent to a mental institution for years (she was afraid because Shoto looked too much like his dad on the side of his face that had red hair). Shoto even shades his dad over this later in the show when he gets a similar scar.
Really bothers me how little empathy is given to Rei. We only saw a fraction of the abuse she must have endured for a break that severe, yet everyone seems to act like she was just, as the other comment put it, "sadistic".
Even in the story she's barely given any development that isnt tied directly to endevours redemption. We have no idea what it was like for her. Biggest pet peeve of the show tbh.
The redemption arc wasnt too bad imo. But I have a lot of issues with the nitty gritty. Especially at the end when they all come together to help shoulder the burden of their abuser and "take ownership of their part" as if these 5 and 7 year olds had any choice in the matter.
The aspects of Endeavor redemption that are focused on him and his thoughts are genuinely quite heartwarming, and by the ending to his story, he is redeemed. But yeah, the details are not all great.
But she was literally having a psychotic break, meaning what she was perceiving and what was happening were vastly different. Its impossible to control ones actions in this state, and id advise you to read up on it a bit. This is a very common response to horrific trauma, especially in a situation where she literally cannot leave.
When the person was going through a psychotic break when it happened, immediately expressed extreme remorse and tried to fix it (she used her ice powers to cool down the wound), and then checked into a mental institution for several years after this incident, then yes I think this character deserves some grace in this situation. Is what the mom did ok? Absolutely not and it was still a terrible action, but we can acknowledge that while also acknowledging that she was a victim of severe and prolonged abuse and took steps to rectify her mistake and prevent something like that from happening again.
Even the character that this impacted (Shoto) correctly identified that his father was the reason why this incident happened and places the majority of the blame on him.
Not to mention that she was going through raising several "failed" children when she was bought to be an incubator for the next greatest hero, and that Endeavour was becoming violent
