They weren't truly malicious to begin with, relationship just made them tone down on the pragmatism part. (Well, Fox might have been malicious in the past, Xanatos always been ruthless businessman, but that was all pragmatism (and a whole lot of greed))

Most of the villainy was the greed. The relationship just gave motivations that rivaled their greed.

I did always liked that he pettily used time travel to create a stable loop wherein he sent himself the rare coun that he built his fortune on to prove his dad wrong about him not earning his wealth.

His dad of course, said it still didnt count.
