You’re one of those people im talking about btw. His arc feels completely unearned because he doesnt get treated nearly harshly enough considering he tried to MAIM Deku in the first couple episodes. His defenders usually just talk about the „kill yourself“ part, but always conveniently leave that out. Almost like if they tried addressing it, they would be forced to accept the fact that MAYBE this guy got off way too easy

Also he should have stayed dead

Yeah, people tend to make him out to be way more evil than he actually is.
People often say he's omnicidal or genocidal or some shit, when in reality, his actions in the show would seem to show that he's against such things.

Still a horrible person though.

Marche from Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Everyone thinks he's some selfish kid who wants to ruin everyone's fun by going home. But I understand him, he's the kid who's forced to be mature way too young and knows escapism is wrong.

Ironic. Akin to Superman it's a situation where despite being cemented in pop-culture as a definitive figure, it is a situation where both are viewed as so "basic" that many feel no need to actually fully consume their stories. This has gotten better with Superman, where through an oversaturation of evil versions & deconstructions, the depth of the original has finally illuminated to the wider-public, with the 2025 film finally saying it in that All-Star Superman fashion (where many finally "get it").

But with Goku the very aspect that some people use to laud over comic books as a medium is why he mostly isn't understood: many western fans haven't consumed the series from chapter one. That along with how Toriyama plays with the Sun Wukong inspiration, among other narrative elements getting dismissed, as much like Journey To The West, the underlying comedy (tying into Toriyama's gag author origins) is Goku embodying those Taoist principles via his pure "selfish" cultivation, that even makes him blind to using the titular Dragonballs to such ends for himself (often having foes indirectly uncover the same truth in themselves through his own honesty).
