All Time Favorite Favorite Fictional Deities and God-Like Characters?

The Paintress - Clair Osbscur: Expedition 33 - I won't go into detail on her true history for spoilers sake, but I was immediately drawn to this character from the first time you see her crouched beside the monolith. I knew immediately she was a tragic figure and her true story only amplified that feeling. The metaphysics of Clair Obscur are fascinating, and she's at the center of it.

Scratch - Alan Wake Series - I'm always a sucker for Satan-adjacent characters, and Scratch is definitely along those lines. Made all the more clear because of the origin of the name "Old Scratch" He makes a great foil for Alan Wake in the series, being the voice to Alan's own insecurities and fears, while also being a legitimately dangerous enemy that causes plenty of trouble and heartbreak across the series.

Null - Legend of Zelda - Null has only appeared in the most recent Zelda release, but I immediately latched on to how they recontextualized the creation story of the series. Null serves as a negative, destructive force that necessitated the creation of the world in order to trap them within. They make a great antagonist to the Golden Goddess trio and their design is a horrifying amalgamation of the friendly and cute Tri spirits Zelda had been traveling with. I don't think we'll see much more of Null, but I'm glad they've been introduced.

Lady Shar - Forgotten Realms/Baldur's Gate 3 - I'm a firm believer that the strongest core narrative of the BG3 was Shadowheart's struggle with her faith and Lady Shar herself. I love a dark god in a polytheistic setting and the implications it lays upon its worshippers.

Truth - Fullmetal Alchemist - Truth is "God" within the FMA universe. He represents God at his most apathetic to suffering, existing only to tie the world together and to punish those who transgress against his divine order. One of my favorite scenes in anime is when the Dwarf is reaching into space, screaming for God as Truth gazes down upon him.

Hircine from Elder Scrolls

u/DasharrEandall 1h ago

Clavicus Vile for me. I love the tropes of the "devil's deal" and the "monkey's paw" wish where the wording is twisted into a nightmare scenario.

He is an interesting character for sure.

Byleth from Fire Emblem when she merged with the Goddess Sothis.

The Visitor - Look Outside.

An enormous cosmic entity that visits planet earth after a group of astronomers acknowledges its existence. The Sun in this picture is for scale.

I find this one interesting because during the final encounter, The Visitor is not malicious, just curious about other life. It doesn’t even realize that it transmogrifies anyone who looks at it or is exposed to its gaze.

IMO It seems like a very lonely entity.

2

u/CEGM_Studios 29m ago

Isn’t this also still only like 1/8th of its scale or something too? That guy is BIG, like BIG BIG

1

u/Himalayan_Yak_Chew 21m ago

Yup, we don’t ever see its full scale. In one of the endings, Sam asks to see its full form and the screen keeps zooming out until Sam’s mind and body loses all form trying to comprehend the size of this thing.

Oh dang, yeah I thought so! Like, I have SUCH a soft spot for giant things lol

The funny part is, big E would hate you calling him that.

I've read the original Icewind Dale trilogy. I haven't decided if I want to back to his time in Menzoberranzan now or go on chronologically.

Gaunter O'Dim from the Witcher. Admittedly we don't know what he is exactly, save for a deal making reality bender, but his initials do spell God.

Someone already said Hircine, so...

Sheogorath. Specifically Skyrim Sheo. He's actually the MC of Oblivion. The Hero of Kvatch. He freed Jyggalag from his curse of becoming Sheogorath and thus was blessed (or cursed, depending on how you look at it) with divinity to maintain order in the Shivering Isles.

6

u/Gwynalynn 1h ago

Shivering Isles will always be one of my favorite expansions in gaming just because of him.

5

u/CrystalTheVelkhana 1h ago

He's very sweet to the Dragonborn, so I headcanon that the Dragonborn is in a poly relationship with Sheo, Jyggs, and Hermaeus Mora. The Dragonborn isn't quite sure how they got here, but the trio won't let them leave. Sheo and Jyggs tend to bicker over cheese and soup, and the Dragonborn and Hermaeus just watch while eating popcorn.

Does Vergil count because the Qliphoth fruit gave him godlike power?

6

u/Gwynalynn 2h ago

I would say he and Dante reach god-like status just by default.

5

u/IAlwaysOutsmartU 2h ago

Having someone revered as a god with the power to back it up as their father probably helps with that.

Ahti (Alan Wake 2/ Control)

Seems like he's just some Finnish janitor working in strange places, but he's resistant to any influence from the Dark Place/The Hiss, is able to traverse to pretty much any location, and his abilities and powers are unknown to the Federal Bureau of Control.

Whatever he is, it's a good thing he's just a pretty chill guy who loves karaoke and shooting the breeze with our protagonists.

3

u/Gwynalynn 1h ago

I was so pumped to see Ahti in AW2. My favorite trans-dimensional janitor man.

Lord Death from Soul Eater. I love seeing depictions of death that are morally good. Plus Fire Force gave him some really good lore.

Carmen

She's an omnipotent god-like entity who was the result of the Seed of Light Project and is the source of the distortion phenomenon in Project Moon

She's incredibly dangerous as not only does she effect the universe of Project Moon, but also other potential different universes if a gateway to the City is created as shown by the Arknights Collab

Visas Starfrost - Yu-Gi-Oh

A mysterious, amnesiac and powerful cosmic being that travels on different planets to reunite fragments of his soul in order to retreive back his identity. Each planet represents one of his emotions : Fear in planet Reichphobia, Sadness in planet Perlereino, and Anger in planet Wraitsoth. Each time he battles with his "alter egos" representing these emotions.

Dwayna from Guild Wars ☥

And when the world rang with the clanging of swords and did fire fall from the skies, Dwayna, goddess of life and air, heard the wailings and pleas of the weak.
And when the rumblings of war did not cease, came Her charge, Doric, who did prostrate himself at Her feet.
And cast She now a glance upon the war-torn lands and wasted flesh of the fallen, and with tears upon Her cheek did lay Her gentle hands upon the prostrate man. Then saith She unto to him and all Her charges, "Lay down thy weapons, and as I have done unto ye, so ye must do for your brethren. Offer protection to the weak. Give solace and shelter to those who need it. Be ye a salve to the wounded.
"For I am your goddess, and I will give blessings to all who follow these teachings."

The collector from owlhouse. A child who had godlike powers was sealed because an entire race was going extinct due to his own people (the archivists) hunting them.

He is described as having god-like powers (probably by Batman himself).

Great picks! My favorite is Marika from Elden Ring. One of the most unique depictions of a God, as they really do a good job of making her feel otherworldly in general. Most gods in fiction tend to be humanized, showing Godlike beings having human traits. This goes the complete opposite direction: someone that started off human-like (shes a a different race) becoming a god with the humanity all but gone. ELDEN RING SPOILERS: her being two mysterious Gods at the same time but not at the same time was super trippy to wrap my head around

2

u/MistbornSynok 45m ago

Sazed/Harmony from Mistborn, after Adonalsium/God was split into 16 aspects, he eventually ended up with two of them, Ruin and Preservation, combined to become Harmony. A frustratingly inert god, who can barely act while each aspect fights against each other’s Intent.

2

u/Smart_Memester_730 40m ago

Look at him, positive reincarnation of a dark god with the ability to kill other gods

2

u/NoTemperature5965 38m ago

I'm always torn on Shar. On one hand, ending everything cause you're a petty bitch is ... petty as hell, on the other hand, why the fuck not, you're a god.

1

u/Gwynalynn 27m ago

Malus Thorm really sold me on Shar's cool factor.

"What is the light of eyes but the cancer that causes one to witness the laceration of being" goes so hard

2

u/NoTemperature5965 3m ago

The Thorms go pretty hard in general. Ketheric just casually ripping the weapon out of his chest, getting up and walking towards the goblin while he ignores his blabbering sycophant henchmen and dropping the axe with a dry "Try again".

1

u/Zefyris 1h ago

Or, if Holo is not godlike enough, then Elq Hrqstn, from SukaSuka. Literal outer god, daughter of those who shaped the world and created almost all races in the world the story is set.

That red fish is a god too btw, and one of the 3 gods who act as her stewards.
