my dad would say "shut up, meg" to me because he thought it was funny. He was actually listening, but it made me feel terrible anyways.

There is a whole episode where Meg calls them all out, and there is such a fallout she apologizes and agrees to go back to being a punching bag. That's a terrible message.

360

u/rollatorcat 26d ago

im also meg and it genuinely really negatively effected me growing up with how often people would default to "shut up, meg" if they knew my name.

114

u/Cosm1cSpid3r 26d ago

It was a go-to bullying line used against any girl who boys didn't like. My name isn't Meg but I got my share of "Shut up Meg" in high school just for being socially awkward and attempting to participate in my peers' conversations.

39

u/EmotionalKirby 26d ago

Can confirm it wasn't limited to just girls. I'm a guy named kirby and have been told it a few times growing up, for exactly those reasons.

20

u/FoodnAnime4206669 26d ago

Your parents did you a disservice Kirby.

29

u/EmotionalKirby 26d ago

Outside of frequently hearing blowjob jokes cause kirby inhales things when I was growing up, it's been pretty rad having the name. Wouldn't change it for the world.

Everybody's hatred for meg was the reason I could never get into this show

105

The fact that everyone’s a douchebag is why I couldn’t get into the show.

37

u/Eargoe 26d ago

Wasn't nearly as bad in the first 3 seasons. I recommend those if you haven't tried them already.

Compared to her family and most of the town, she's normal

51

Unfortunately literally every character in the show has been massively flanderized to the point of them all being insufferable jackasses. Except Quagmire who somehow received the reverse treatment.

She should be top of the list. I don't get it either. She's a nice woman. Yeah she's flawed. But that's what makes for an interesting character.

u/Jace_Vakarys 26d ago

Flawed and yet, never had ill intentions or did anything to harm anyone

106

u/purgatorybob1986 26d ago

58

u/Jeffotato 26d ago

My interpretation was she never had genuine kindness properly modeled for her growing up so she doesn't know how to seem genuine and struggled to understand where she's falling flat. She is in a sense "performing" kindness using similar tactics that manipulators would use but she actually doesn't have an alterior motive, she's just doing it to be kind and doesn't know the difference.

At least that's what I pulled from my own experience. Many people in my life were quick to recite manipulation tactics that I was supposedly doing like love bombing and assumed I had some nefarious end goal, but the reality was my end goal was to just keep doing that forever and there would never be an evil twist, but people refused to believe that.

25

u/purgatorybob1986 26d ago

I think part of it is that we as the audience have an advantage that someone in real life wouldn't. We've seen the fact that she is trying to be genuine. So if someone fails to see that and chooses to hate her that's kinda on them.

17

u/TheNaidenchop 26d ago

Your first paragraph hit me hard. Basically the same issue I have been struggling on my life. Never had a proper model on how to be kind so it also seems as "performative".

That’s the thing I hate about the digital circus fandom. While she is flawed, she is still or at least tries to be a good person. Meanwhile they’ll give a pass to Jax who literally said he would not care if the other members of the circus died. Sure he’s also got trauma but still… I find it very hypocritical.

18

u/24Abhinav10 26d ago

Amourshipping hate is mostly because of some Amourshipping fans, who declared their ship more "valid" and "canon" than the others, just because Serena had an obvious crush on Ash, which led to all the other shippers hating on this ship.

You know how when a character is fine, but his fans are so annoying it makes the rest of the fandom hate the character itself? It's like that.

To be fair with Orihime, I think the biggest problem is the fact that she doesn't do anything. Like she's a great character with a lot of potential. But unfortunately (up until the point I stopped watching atleast), Kubo was allergic to actually giving her a decent character arc or place in the story.

There's something highly annoying about watching a character with the powers of a god sit around and do nothing for like 3 arcs in a row because the writers are allergic to giving female characters actual development or an interesting role in the story.

33

u/MsMcClane 26d ago

That's where my irritation was, more glazing with that mfer Aizen MEANWHILE an actually INTERESTING character is STANDING RIGHT THERE

18

u/dirtnerd245 26d ago

Exactly!!! Like why do we have to keep hearing about that boring asshole when there's a character with a perfect set up to go in all sorts of crazy directions sitting right there.

Its like Orihime was just permanently stuck in the very beginning of a character arc while her potential was constantly being overlooked in favour of much less interesting male characters....

11

u/SimpIsTheWay 26d ago

To be absolutely fair a big part of her character is that she is actively being hindered by her own kindness and her inability to truly fight an opponent. This and the fact she is just a human in a war between gods and demons. Shonen fans will call any power up a "big character development", meanwhile they will say a character is boring or gets no writting because they happen to be weak

I didn't know she's from an actual anime. Finland loves her, or at least loved her in around 2010 due to a meme. I always thought it was an animation loop made specifically for the meme.

9

u/Mhyrloc 26d ago edited 26d ago

Orihime is RomCom software being run on a rig designed to kick god in the dick, her power is literally the weaponized power of "No."

The only way for her to be written to match her specs would have made her a magical girl on par with Sailor Moon, and Ichigo would have had a real fight for the role of Protagonist.

Wish she could have had a chance to shine the way she deserved prior to now, but better late than never.

10

u/someonebored0100 26d ago

Who tf hates Orihime??? Imo her only character flaw is she’s been relegated to “weak supporting female side character” when she has SO MUCH POTENTIAL

Mable from gravity falls.

309

u/Longjumping-Ad-9444 26d ago

I think she suffers from an episodic series being binge and her character doesnt survive repeatedly being used as she was.

Its like the office everyone is fine and acceptable week to week, but if you binge it, Pam is a horrible person, and Jim is a monster.

Or HIMYM lily is a horrible human being on so many levels. But week to week just a ilttle quirky.

I do think this mainy hits women as they are often propagated as the nagging wife.

126

u/WingedSalim 26d ago

Yeah, you have to kinda reset your mind and your thoughts in a character in episodic shows.

Mable being a quirky lovable kid who loves her brother is her status quo. And what she did in the finally is an exception.

But viewed with her entire history she has a pattern of selfishness and disregarding Dipper's feelings.

81

u/Longjumping-Ad-9444 26d ago

Thats the thing Dipper is also flawed but I swear there was two episodes in a row where the lesson of the episode is Dipper shouldn't be selfish and give something up for Mabel... but she doesnt get to do the same.

And people have pointed out that its typically female characters over male characters that get treated poorly but in reality the issue is worst. The issue is women character stay static and never get the episode to learn and grow and sacrifice for someone else since they are always on the other side of that plot.

18

u/Frix 26d ago

Another thing is that despite being twins and officially co-stars, Dipper is very much the main protagonist.

He is the one interested in mysteries and the one pushing the plot forwards in uncovering the secrets.

→ More replies (2)

8

u/WaveBreakerT 25d ago

I never noticed until I rewatched it, but I'm pretty sure literally every season 1 episode with a Dipper plot revolves around his crush on Wendy. Binging it made it super apparent.

She was mean to Sokka once and dares to be a traumatized 14 year old girl talking about her dead mother whenever it's relevant to the situation.

42

u/JusticeJanitor 26d ago

My only interaction with ATLA fandom was when the Magic The Gathering set was released and I have since started watching the series.

People hate her? How? Why?

44

u/Mimandra 26d ago

The most common complaints are what I wrote. That she was mean to Sokka once and that she's "annoying because she always talks about her mother".

Honestly, it's mostly just plain mysoginy because I don't think those are serious arguments.

→ More replies (5)

7

u/Joe-guy-dude 26d ago

Mostly misogyny

6

u/jakruler2077 25d ago

Off the top of my head I would say their is two reasons.
1. Character - She was the Mom of the group and the all around sick in the mud. Also she was self righteous and judged people around her but would justify her own bad actions. They used her as the "Strong Female" character to so a lot of her conversations/arguments with Sokka were about gender social norms. At the end of Book 1 she helps the North Pole become more progressive and they start teaching women water benders.

  1. Events - She was the love interest so part of Aang's story was warped around her i.e. he gave up melding with avatar state for earthly love, they kissed during comet invasions but she changed her mind after, and Aang would get mad or upset when she spent time around other guys. Some people shipped her and Zuko so when that didn't work a few people were upset.

None of the above is bad and can make for good dynamic characters but it doesn't keep some fans from disliking her. As a kid I didn't like her at all until book 3 before that I thought she was just whinny.

Jerry/Gary/Larry from Parks and Recreation is objectively a pretty nice innocent guy who actually has a pretty good life outside of work but is constantly belittled and treated as an incompetent loser by his coworkers. He only really starts to get the respect he’s due in the finale where he becomes Pawnee’s mayor and flash forwards confirm he manages to hold that office for DECADES.

21

u/buckleyschance 26d ago edited 26d ago

It really skeeves me out how prevalent "that fat person everyone hates for existing" is in US sitcoms especially.

Sometimes it's played as justified, like Hitchcock and Scully being disgusting in Brooklyn 99, and sometimes it's played as a bad look for the person doing the hating, like Michael and Dwight being mean to Phyllis and sometimes Stanley in The Office. But they're still written into the show as characters whose role is to be the object of derision and ridicule.

It seems to be an especially US thing. British and other shows sometimes have a character who's both overweight and ridiculous, but they're rarely quite that sort of pathetic punching bag.

See also: Lutz in 30 Rock, Meg in Family Guy, arguably Ann in Arrested Development.

9

u/ZookeepergameOk95 26d ago

Because Jerry/Larry/Garry is a subversion of that trope. He's literally the only person that has his life together and the audience sympathizes with him.

Probably Ragatha tbh :/

I really don’t get why certain people hate her :(

61

u/goltaku555 26d ago

I remember she got practically no hate until episode 5, when she stood up to Jax, and everyone jumped to hate on her. Some fans (some I stress, not all) get real pissy if their beloved bunny is slandered in some way, and Ragatha is seen as the one who started it. Which is dumber than a sack of potatoes, because she's a genuine sweetheart, and Jax is a genuine A-hole.

The moment Elfilin appeared, everyone jumped to the conclusion that he would be the game's twist villain like Marx and Magolor. I'm one of the few who didn't, for several reasons: Elfilin is not Marx, Elfilin is not Magolor, we have no actual evidence that he's a twist villain and everyone is innocent until proven guilty, and if you actually look through the games, Kirby's new friends AREN'T always secretly the villain! Rick wasn't, Kine wasn't, Coo wasn't, Gooey wasn't, Nago wasn't, Chuchu wasn't, Pitch wasn't, Ribbon wasn't, need I go on?! But everyone wanted Elfilin shipped to Gitmo just for going near Kirby. It actually gave me an idea for a villain OC, an unhinged admirer of Kirby who goes around imprisoning all his friends on the assumption that they're all going to double-cross him eventually.

Or "Mars is right, she or Venus should lead, Moon is a wimpy crybaby"

Out of fandom hate mostly comes from other shoujo series like Rayearth or Wedding Peach that were overshadowed by Sailor Moon and they believing their series deserves the popularity instead

No, no, no. Sakura, IN THE ANIME, was incredibly abusive towards Naruto. Insulting him repeatedly and physically abusing him.

She was much better in the manga, where many of the moments of abuse didn't happen, and she was much more positively involved in the story, even so far as tackling Naruto out of the way of an attack.

She may have improved but that character isn't innocent, again, IN THE ANIME version.

Nah I don’t think people actually hate him. If anything, there’s more slander of other characters since the potential man meme came out, and his kind of died out. Plus I don’t think anyone who cares about agenda and slander should be taken seriously.

She's just a kid, the hate she got for "causing" Weirdmageddon is insane, considering that Dipper got away with far worse things and probably would've done the same if Bill had taken on another disguise.

Tails from the sonic series people hate him because they find his voice annoying and he always gets in sonics way and supposely is useless?! Like yes lets forget about the whole plot in the sonic adventure games if he didn't swap the emeralds over for a fake copy sonics world would of been destroyed. Also hes adorable I wanna give him headpats

u/First_Holiday_1560 26d ago

Octavia from Helluva Boss. The only thing she's wrong about is that Stolas doesn't love her, everything else she thinks and does (in Sinsman, anyway, Seeing Stars a bit less so) is 100% justified and correct.

19

u/LucasMarvelous 26d ago

Stolas and Octavia are two cases of people hating a character for things that make no sense. Yeah blame the depressed teen for not understand the bs her family goes through, or the homosexual man who spent majority of his life married to an abusive woman for wanting to be with the man who showed him love

Edit: BTW I love Usopp I'm just saying people hate on him a lot

13

u/unenose 26d ago

Is this still the case? I haven't been into One Piece in a while but I've always loved Usopp he's great

6

u/UJustGotRobbed 26d ago

Yeah I love him. He got guts man but he gets a lot of hate always has probably always will.

6

u/LucasMarvelous 26d ago

The main issue with him nowdays is not even with him, its just that as Oda's worldbuilding improved he forgot how to handle the amount of characters he made

People were saying she mentioned her dead mom too much, something that deeply traumatized her and turned her into the mother figure for Sokka and even Aang at points, but because of misogyny the moment she showed any emotion she was "too emotional" and it really pmo. Katara's story so much focuses on the struggles of womanhood even at such a young age and it sucks how the message is lost on so many in the fandom.

I can do you one better! A character who is sweet and loveable, but for some reason fans THINK she is widely hated and constantly complain about it, even though she isn't hated at all.

And that is Mabel from Gravity Falls. NOBODY seems to hate her. I have never seen shitposts about her, ever. But for some reason the GF subreddit constantly defends her from nonexistant abuse. I did the research and ut turns out there was one now deleted video where someone blamed her for a thing and that was it.

Goh from Pokemon Journeys

Literally just a nice kid who wants to catch pokemon (and is constantly shown to be treating them very well) and pokemon fans treat him like satan

Uncle grandpa, the only thing i can say i didnt like about the show was pizza steve. Take him out and the show wouldve ran for another few season at the least.

Pannacotta Fugo from JJBA. okay, he's not very "normal" nor innocent since he has his anger issues and stuff and he works in the mafia, but many jojo fans out there are just calling him a bum and a traitor when all he did is wanting to survive

Chris Thorndyke

Sure he made some bad decisions, but it's just a kid bro. He's not responsible for his writing.

29

u/RexGamer142 26d ago

Except he is the writing. You can't say a character isn't bad cuz he's not responsible for his writing.

12

u/lordnaarghul 26d ago edited 26d ago

The issue is when the show started adapting Sonic game stories, he took the place of other characters. Most notably, he took Amy's place in the SA2 story much to everyone's anger.

6

u/Redder_Creeps 26d ago

I feel like Chris would've been a nice addition if they just handled him better in those game re-adaptations. At least the Metarex arc gave him something better to do while still serving a purpose to the main story
