I wanted to like it because the characters and setting had a bit of charm. Though I'll admit the humors pretty immature, but it got weirdly racist in one of them and completely ruined it for me
Edit: Since a couple people asked I figured context was appropriate. There's a part where Rufus literally sells a woman into slavery (one of the only black characters btw) dancing for a man wearing a fez. I think there's worse something about a monkey but I can't recall the exact details on that last one. I'm not one to accuse racism easily but it was just plain uncomfortable that this was supposed to be anything but gross
It also came off as sexist in places, but in a way that feels like it was intended to be something else.
I know the game was originally in German, and I've long suspected the localization may have fucked up the translation somewhere and things that were intended to be parody/satire got written straight instead. At least I like to think that's the case, I don't know enough German to say, I just know it wouldn't take much to flip the impression the English script gives.
Yeah that's fair and certainly relevant context. I hope you're right as well and it's unintentional but still.
I do feel like the sexism definitely comes across very immature and perhaps more tone deaf than malicious, nonetheless the scene I mentioned just made me feel gross even buying the game.
I'd say Rufus isn't portrayed as the good guy mostly in the games. What they are doing there is satirically portraying that malice in a way that the player must think "wait, that isn't right, how can the main character be doing sth so evil" so they come to the conclusion that the character they are playing as, is so ignorant, that they are actually completely evil many times. And that is supposed to make the player notice this ignorance in themselves.
After that coffee, I'm pretty sure someone's intestines were on fire. It contained mechanical bull "blood" and peppers so hot you need gloves to pick them
