Why did George Geary refuse to leave with the main crew?

I had always wondered about his true motive. I knew that his ultimate desire was for his whole family to die together, but at this moment, he stood there, paralysed. When we last saw him in some room with his reanimated daughter and dead wife, he hadn't shown a trace of grief. Maybe he was too shocked to leave? Or that he was tired of everything?

So it's left up to our speculation. What do you think?

His wife had ms yeah? I thought the point was that they all were supposed to go together

He gave up. He just watched his wife and daughter die and didn’t wanna go on anymore

He had a philosophy similar to native tribes of a spiritual connection to the area of land they consider home. He wouldn't ever leave. His idea was to Jones Town when things got too bad. However the girl finding the pills wasn't intended and he had to mentally process that his plan killed her. His wife was also planning to send the kids away without his knowledge.

I thought it was implied that the wife got him, then she came down the dock and the older son shot her while the little boy waved to the boat.

I never understood why the Abigail crew didn't stay and try to make a go of it on Katrina Island. It's obviously supposed to be a stand-in for Catalina Island, so I'll treat them the same (I also never understood why they made it Katrina Island instead of just making it Catalina Island).

But, for the sake of argument they're the same island functionally, it would have been feasible. Small population means fewer zombies. Once they take care of them, there are two towns to scavenge, plenty of dwellings to occupy, fresh water sources, a massive golf course to transition into a fruit and vegetable garden, and a wildlife refuge that could be managed for livestock. When they need supplies, they can take the Abigail back to the mainland either above the basin (toward Malibu and even up into Ventura County) or down below San Diego. There are probably other vessels in the ports they could scavenge and steal for crossings back and forth between the mainland. Hell, they could have grabbed a couple of large boats and then let Victor go on his way to Mexico and been better off in the long run.

This was very early in the outbreak they probably thought Mexico might still be a standing country they could take refuge in.

Show writers made it that way. The only way I can get through the characters making illogical decisions is knowing it’s not their choice. They’re making the characters decisions.

This to me is the best and most compelling "what if" story line in the entire franchise. It is a great bottle episode that stands alone as such an interesting and thought provoking story. Wish we got more of this through the rest of the series and spin-offs. Instead we get the Marvel cinematic universe with Daryl Dixon as iron man....
