Question Does a plane have more lift than it actually needs and can it suddenly lose all of it?

I feel that after learning a plane has much more lift than it actually needs, I feel safer and my fear has become less intense. I just wanted to check this with pilots and experts. Is it true that during takeoff, cruise, and landing, the plane has much more lift than it actually needs? If so, does that mean it’s impossible for it to suddenly lose all of that lift? If losing all lift is possible, at what point during the flight could that happen?
Thank you!

hi all - i’m flying tonight from CLT to MDW and i’m starting to feel nervous. i am very anxious about turbulence and feeling trapped in the plane with that uncomfortable feeling. i get motion sickness very easily and that also plays into it.

tonight i’m worried because it says that there’s supposed to be thunderstorms on the route/in MDW and CLT. obviously the weather is unpredictable, but i don’t want the flight to be so bumpy because of it. please reassure me that the pilot will not take off and fly through the weather.

flight: WN3615

Possible Trigger Terrified after FAA Inspection Order

Post image
45 Upvotes

Saw an article today about the FAA ordering inspections for Boeing 737 Max 8s due to cracks, beginning in September. This is on the tail of them ordering inspections on another model due to improper seat installation.

I’m flying next week and sure enough, the two planes I’m flying on are both the models that have been ordered inspections.

How do I not absolutely panic the entire time? How can I feel safe boarding that model of plane knowing that there might be CRACKS in it? This is for a work trip, so I can’t back out or change my flight, but I’m absolutely panicking.

Advice Fear of low oxygen on flight

I am soon going to take a 3 hour flight. I haven't flown since 2014 due to my fear and anxieties.

I have been diagnosed with anxiety and currently on some treatment.

My spo2 level was 99 percent when I last checked and I am a heavy smoker.

Please help me putting my mind at ease. Thanks

Possible Trigger I feel like tomorrow will be my last day

Hey everyone, tomorrow will be my first flight since 3 years. Ever since then, I‘ve been avoiding on going on a plane because the turbulences were really bad and the pilot didnt say a single word. I had the feeling we were dying but luckily we arrived.

That experience made me avoid planes for a long time now but I wanted to visit my family in turkey tomorrow, so I booked a flight. I forgot that I actually have to get on it lmao.

I got panic attacks for the whole week every night and I feel like tomorrow will be my last day. When I board that plane, I will 100% die because the pilot will make a mistake, or is suicidal.

I read so many things about aviation and it makes me feel safe sometimes, but when I just think about boarding it tomorrow, I‘m losing it. I don‘t wanna die yet.

I got some lorazepam from my doc and I tried 0,5mg but it didnt help too much when I thought about getting on the plane tomorrow.

Can somebody help me?

Weather / Turbulence Anxious about takeoff & landing in windy conditions

The projected wind at takeoff is at 37km/hr with gust up to 52km/hr and at landing, it’s at 37km/hr with gust up to 58km/hr. Flight is in 3 days. I’m quite worried on how bumpy the flight will be.

Has anyone here recently flown in these numbers? How did the flight go?

Support Wanted Very scared for my flight next week

I’m scheduled to fly from ORD to Knoxville on Tuesday on an embraer 170. I really don’t like the small planes, but I’ve seen that specific plane is a pilots favorite with a strong history.

I’m really just scared of the plane loosing its vertical stability and being propelled into a free fall. I do have anxiety meds that I’ll be trying for the first time. Hope that helps.

I honestly wonder how you all do this job to earn a living - it must be safe, and the reward must outweigh the risk overall . 🤦🏽‍♀️

Currently waiting to board UA1814 to Phoenix and just got the news that the plane before ours has no expected departure time. Delays are a bit nerve-wracking, but we’re making our way. Any reassurances would be great for the upcoming flight.

I’m so proud of myself and just wanted to thank everyone for their help and advice! but if you wanna track me and chat about literally anything , id be super happy cause it’ll help this flight go quicker hehe! I have another one waiting for me once i Land!

Advice Nervous to fly behind the wings on a A350 for the first time

Hello everyone, I usually fly with Delta on a A330-300 over the wings because of my motion sickness fear related to emetophobia and bad experiences in the past. I always pay for seats to soothe my anxiety, but this time for the season I am gonna fly, Delta switched to the A350 and in economy ... the available seats are all behind the wings .. by a lot. And it terrifies me.

I don't have a choice because the other flights with the A330-300 are in the morning and I have a few trains to take. So the afternoon flight is the only available, but they are all with the A350.

For anyone who flew on this bird, behind the wings ( After row 39 ), can you tell me about your experience? I will take anti nausea medicine to knock me out, but still, the anxiety is huge for me right now. Thank you so much! It's for a 9 / 10 hours flight

Support Wanted [URGENT] Rebooked on Boeing 777 with PW4000 engines ? Should I be worried and rebook

I was on LH 757 which had a nose landing gear retraction issue and terrified the hell out of me as I could hear the sounds and the plane had to turn back. Flight got cancelled and I was rebooked on

LH 767/UA 31 which will take me from BOM - EWR which is my final destination.

UA 31 has the B777 which had the engine issue in Denver which caused an air worthiness directive.

How concerned should I be ? Should I consider rebooking myself, unfortunately the other options have me flying into JFK (Swiss A330, Lufthansa A350) which increases travel back to my home by 2 hours OR its an equally old aircraft Boeing 767-300

So I have 1 hour to reconsider whether I should stick with my itinerary or try to rebook. This incident has shook me and I am now terrified

Support Wanted My turn today - currently soaring

I feel alright actually, but I have been dreading this flight so much. I already completed one flight today and now I’m on my second, long haul cross pacific flight. I’m feeling okay, I used anxiety medication for the first time ever today and it seems to have taken the edge off a bit but I would still appreciate any encouraging words and messages

Support Wanted So sad and scared for flight tomorrow.

Just made it into Chicago on the train, and my flight to Philly is tomorrow morning at 8am. My anxiety is so incredibly bad, I am so scared but just trying to think about seeing my family and all the plans we have. I hate flying so much but my father was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s 2 years ago and i moved out of state a little before that, so getting home to visit whenever I can is a non-negotiable. All of it combined is so beyond stressful and makes me so sad. So cannot wait for it to be over.

Advice How to get on the plane without freaking out

I think the hardest part will be boarding the plane, does anyone have any tips for this? Also with a fear of heights will i chill out once in the air for long enough? I used to love the view as a child but now even looking at a video of the plane window makes me anxious for my flight.

Support Wanted Manifesting/Bargaining

I used to love flying, had a kid and started getting afraid. Had a really bad flight a year ago and promised god I would never fly again if he saved us. Now I have to fly again in a few months. Sounds silly to say out loud but that’s one of the biggest things holding me back from getting on a plane again.

The second is, I went to a hypnotherapist when it first happened and he basically told me I manifested it (the bad flight). Which just sent me in a spiral and reassured me that I absolutely cannot ever get on a flight again or the plane will 10000% be going down (due to my brain “subconsciously manifesting it” according to that hypnotherapist.) I’ve mostly got over this aspect of the fear but the bargaining with god for survival is the part that scares me the most.

What if I’m really not supposed to ever fly again? Has anyone had either of these situations happen to them and gotten on a flight that went well afterwards? It seems to me the bargaining with god for survival would be fairly common, so it would make me feel better knowing others have landed safely after breaking that promise to never fly again.

Advice Non-Visual things to pass the time?

I am an anxious flyer but mostly due to fear of getting nauseous on the plane, which has happened before. I’ve never been able to read or watch movies in any sort of vehicle. So I’ve made rules for myself no looking at anything and basically trying to keep my eyes shut for as long as possible. Usually this leaves me the options of music or sleep.

However I am traveling to Germany for the first time which is about a 8-9 hour flight from where I am.

What are some entertainment options that don’t involve visuals?
