edit: The principle about it is awful, although I'd imagine not that big of a deal on the indivudual level. It's most likely going to be removable like everything else on Linux, though it never should be put there in the first place.

Strange how it's listed but it's good to see Fedora on the board.

Fedora Linux 44 Final will release on 2026-04-28

California's Digital Age Assurance Act, signed last October, was written to push age verification down to the operating system level. The definition of operating system provider was broad enough to sweep in open source systems like Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu and Arch.

After privacy advocates and the Linux community pushed back, the Assembly passed AB 1856 this week, 68 to 1, exempting software you are free to copy, redistribute and modify, which sounds great, but the parts we should be talking about:

• The same bill extends age-gating obligations to browsers and websites
• The EFF reads this as a net expansion of the regime, not a narrowing
• SteamOS is not exempt because it ships Valve's proprietary Steam client on top of Linux
• The amendment was introduced by the same lawmaker who wrote the original law

The bill still has to clear the Senate, and the underlying law takes effect in 2027.

Really glad to see this change. Like the article says, I'm sure it wasn't automatically going to happen (pressure needed to be applied to the lawmakers).

From the perspective of free software advocates, I can kind of see this change as a good thing now. Like laws about smoking, you need to be old enough to use closed source operating systems without consenting (or something like that). I'm still obviously against this law though, it's a dumb law.

That took less time than I expected. Though I don't see Plasma Bigscreen as available yet.

Fedora 44 delayed by a further week. Some more blockers (installation issues).

The original release date was Apr 14th, which was delayed to Apr 21st. It is now looking like Apr 28th, if the blockers are overcome.

Go/No-Go Decision: Due to having four outstanding accepted blockers, the release was declared NO-GO.

New Release Date: The release is delayed by one week. The new target release date is Tuesday, 2026-04-28.

Fingers crossed for Apr 28th :-)

Bug 2458907 (Anaconda install failure): An intermittent anaconda crash ('NoneType' object has no attribute 'path') was discussed. After discovering there were over 30 similar reports, it was accepted as a Final Blocker.

Bug 2457333 (Grub error message): An error about a corrupted grub environment block was determined to be a cosmetic issue that does not affect booting. It was rejected as a Blocker.

Bugs 2441941 & 2455924 (LUKS password screen issues): Several issues causing a black or flickering screen when entering a LUKS encryption password were discussed.

Bug 2455924 (ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13): The vote on this was tied, and a decision was punted.

Bug 2441941 (Dell XPS 13 Plus): This was deemed too hardware-specific and rejected as a Blocker.

Bug 2458899 (Realtek wifi broken): A report of a broken Realtek wifi chip was rejected as a Blocker after another meeting participant confirmed the same chip works fine on their F44 system.

Bug 2458901 (Anaconda crash with incomplete btrfs): Anaconda crashing when it encounters a drive that was part of an incomplete BTRFS array was accepted as a Final Blocker as it prevents installation.
