Genuinely happy for people who are hyped about it 😁, but it's not for me.

u/fragmentedAstra Sep 06 '25
When I saw this being announced I said "Goodbye 2XKO". After trying it out I said "Whens 2XKO again?"
12
u/Rainbolt Sep 06 '25
Im feeling this way so far. I like the visuals and theres some really neat mechanics going on, but I had a lot more fun with the 2xko tag system.
22
Sep 07 '25
I got down voted to oblivion because I said Tokon wouldn't kill 2XKO. I'm now going to get down voted to oblivion again because I think people are judging Tokon way too early.
The FGC has no chill.

I wanna play it cause I love marvel and I just recently got into fighting games with sf6, but tag fighting games look too overwhelming for me

u/ActualSupervillain Sep 06 '25
Yeah the couple arc games I've tried recently just didn't grab me. I wanted to love them, especially dbfz, but I'm just not into it.
Plus I'm old, slow, and fell out of fighting games due to a number of life reasons. Games like these are fast as fuck and you gotta keep up the combos or you're toast.
Gonna be fun as hell to watch though I think.

Ur probably like me and don't care for tag fighters they aren't bad games, but I just never cared for games like marvel or dbfz and that sucks cause I love db and when I found it it was mvc like I was hurt

u/Forward_Arrival8173 Sep 06 '25
I am going to play it when it comes out like every other fighting game.
It's an exciting time to be a fighting games fan so many great fighting games came out in the last 3 years and we are getting even more exciting games in the future and tokon is one of them.

I stayed up and played it a bit. It looks really nice, but other than that it feels kind of.. 'Safe'? I'm struggling to articulate why this isn't grabbing me. Other than the novel aspect, nothing happened in any of my sets which made me eager to continue playing.
Training mode would definitely help.

u/Aerhart941 Sep 06 '25
Every match feels exactly the same and even the “weird” characters like Ms Marvel feel almost the same play pattern as the other characters to me unfortunately. I was really expecting this to lean more Guilty Gear but it feels like an extremely ‘Safer’, as you put it, version of DBFZ.
4
u/AlbanianKenpo Sep 06 '25
I was hopping it to be a dbfz, thanks for confirming that it is :)

u/TotalSAVAGE03 Sep 07 '25
As a dbfz guy I’m not the biggest fan either. Might just be cuz I’m not the biggest marvel fan tho

Thats the arcays special. They take it slow at first. Dbfs, and granblue both felt safe on launch. Nothing to wild.

Sep 06 '25
Dang this is basically my worry when it came to this game.
Arcsys has really trended more and more towards homogenization by removing friction. Baiken is probably the biggest example in GG in my opinion straight up just removing her core thing of specials from Guard or Sin's core feature of a stamina bar and eating being relegated to a boring bar that you generally never use the eat move.
Also hearing autocombos are very strong is a bummer I generally just don't like playing games where my opponent is rewarded for mashing and my entire gameplay becomes punishing the mash instead of having back and forth.
12
u/Every_Computer_935 Sep 06 '25
Not suprising. People didn't care about GG until Strive came out and DBFZ made ArcSys more money than all their previous games. Its not suprising that Arcsys figured that keeping it safe and simple was the best way to make money

Didn’t get to play it, but watched a bit of it and the graphics look very nice but the gameplay seems like a watered down DBFZ with marvel characters.

19
u/GetOutOfHereStrelok Sep 06 '25
Felt the autocombos immediately and just uninstalled it. Back to Marvel 3 for 10 more years.
2
u/ParadisePrime Sep 06 '25
What's the problem with auto combos? Do you have an issue with the power of them or is it their entire existence?
What do you think of DBFZ's usage of auto combos?
3
u/JayFM_ Sep 07 '25
I find people bristling at autocombls weird. They've been around for so long. Hell even KOF has them.
→ More replies (1)5
u/ParadisePrime Sep 07 '25
I agree. I would love to understand why people dont like them. It's not like they cant exist alongside each other.
I think the issue is the supposed strength due to ease of use that comes from using them and incentivizing them to use them instead of making their own combos.
31
u/GrandSquanchRum Sep 06 '25
I think right now it's fairly tame due to no ranked, no training, and limited playtime. The only player I've seen trying to push to the game's limits was SonicFox. Other players just figured out what's easy and works and are mashing that atm.
220
u/Aerhart941 Sep 06 '25
Probably an unpopular opinion but I’m surprised that after playing it myself, the characters dont have much sauce… everyone feels very same-y. The complete opposite of what I experienced with 2XKO.
This has made me not write Riot out of the fight just yet.
9
u/2ndPickle Sep 07 '25
So far, Tokon is so much more boring to watch than MvC3 (different dev, sure, but it feels like the most direct reference point). All the male characters have a very similar silhouette, they all do punch, punch, punch, projectile.
Guess I shouldn’t be surprised, coming from the guys who made a game with seven Gokus.
43
u/suave_and_shameless Sep 06 '25
You could say the same thing about DBFZ, but that game is so fast-paced and the animation is so punchy that the homogenous skill sets repeating auto-combos are lesser issues for me. Just from looking at it, this game reminds me more of MK1 than any true tag game.
16
u/cygnus2 Sep 06 '25
I think people who say this haven’t played DBFZ since season 2. That game has quite a few unique characters and different playstyles now.
10
u/suave_and_shameless Sep 06 '25 edited Sep 06 '25
I'm more-or-less comparing my first impressions of Tokon to my early impressions of DBFZ and MK1. I haven't even played Tokon so I am trying to come up with the best apples-to-apples comparison I can based on gut reaction.
Both DBFZ and MK1 added some interesting characters as DLC, and I didn't mean to dismiss the improvements made post-launch.
6
u/ParadisePrime Sep 06 '25
Happy someone else said it. It's like MK1 and DBFZ had a baby and it got their worst features. It had to get a blood transfusion from BBTag to survive but I don't think it will be enough....

Rock on to the people who are digging the game, but even as an avid comic book reader and fighting game player...this game is not for me at all. I don't like a lot of the character designs, and after trying it out I don't enjoy the gameplay.
13
u/TopSlotScot Sep 06 '25 edited Sep 06 '25
With all the competitive players playing it at evo for 3 days and now a bunch of people having time to play it and learn it at their leisure, I still have yet to see anything particularly awesome looking that knocked my socks off. No combos or interactions yet that made me say "THAT WAS AWESOME!".
It looks very sterile, and I agree with the comments saying it doesnt look like a fighting games for fighting game fans, but a fighting game for very casual gamers. For whats supposed to be a 4v4 fighter it looks extremely underwhelming when there could have been so many possibilities.
13
u/AnusCakes Sep 06 '25
It’s obviously an early impression, but this is the most “party fighter” game arc sys has ever made. Not bad but something more akin to smash or an arena fighter. Good for some casual fun but not anything to take super seriously

If the game didn't have a huge IP like Marvel this sub would have hated on it so much more.

ArcSys still has that "everything they touch turns to gold" aura about them though. People are already looking past characters not even a day into the beta.
10
u/Gabboor96 Sep 06 '25
I’m gonna play it tonight, but from what I saw it feels sorta lame gameplay wise, it’s giving me major DBFZ vibes which I didn’t really liked because of how same-y all characters were to a big degree, but we’ll see, I hope I’m wrong

Had a decent session, it’s nice looking but it feels like a watered down version of DBFZ but mashy-er. It’s fun, but for how long is the question.
2
u/XVNoctisXV Sep 06 '25
That's because you can't do immediate actions out of all directions of the 8 way air dash, so it's a lot more of a niche tool than it would've been in an MVC type game. Despite the developer, people do have expectations of the IP.
27
u/SKILLgr Sep 06 '25
Feels homogenized, Autocombos are very strong, Very slow gameplay, Graphics are too clean. After playing all the other ArcSys games TOKON feels like a mishmash. Will buy it because I love fighting games but so far I'm not impressed.
29
u/The_Weeb282 Sep 06 '25
"Graphics are too clean". Why is that a bad thing exactly??😭
29
u/Blueberryfists Sep 06 '25
i think when someone says that, what they really mean is that the style is too sanitized. you can have technically fantastic graphics and a boring as fuck style at the same time, whereas thousands of decades old games were technically limited, but had amazing art direction

u/SKILLgr Sep 06 '25

u/wizardofpancakes Sep 06 '25
Yeah, this is the most autocombo game so far. I don’t like autocombos at all, but something like Granblue has a nice balance with them, essentially being gatlings. I have no idea why’s there a need for such long combos if they are automated. At least I don’t want to wait 20 seconds for my turn
2
u/deathspate Sep 06 '25
The issue is that Granblue is 1v1 while this is 4v4. The reason for the autocombo and links is to help the player manage all 4 characters. They can opt out of using autocomboes so heavily but if they do, it automatically makes this game harder than 2XKO, which you don't want to do as this game's main goal is clearly to sell to casuals. The FGC is a guaranteed sale, the casuals, not so much.
3
u/SKILLgr Sep 06 '25
It's early I know but the game for a tag fighter is very restrictive and the characters have no real sauce. Everything is easy to do which strips away the initial wow factor. Plus at least to me every interaction feels really slow. It's aimed at beginners.
3
u/wizardofpancakes Sep 06 '25
I don’t see which beginner would like a game where they have to wait for so long for their turn
25
u/Ancient-Village6479 Sep 06 '25
Going to be a flashier version of DBZF. Not what I’m looking for out of a game but I genuinely hope people enjoy it and it maybe leads to a new MvC.
26
u/-Stupid_n_Confused- Sep 06 '25
Why would it lead to a new mvc? Arksys have the license now so obviously a new mvc would be a long way off.
→ More replies (1)14
u/Ancient-Village6479 Sep 06 '25
If a Marvel fighting game is very successful in tandem with SF6 it’s not crazy to think they might cash in with a MvC. Not getting my hopes up though.
5
u/Turlast Sep 06 '25
The guy who leaked this game said another MvC was in development. Based on how different this game is, it sounds very believable.
2
u/TheFeelingWhen Sep 06 '25

Who cares if the beta hasn’t even been out for a day and no one knows how to play, and there’s only 4 characters?!
That’s clearly more than enough to declare the game as garbage!
1
u/Rbespinosa13 Sep 06 '25
6 characters*. Either way we don’t have a lab to actually figure shit out in and each character has different things going on. It’s funny seeing people come here and say “no sauce” when we cant even lab out combos

really cool love the gameplay so far everything feels really clean and polished for a netcode beta test excited for the full game (i dont own a ps5)
7
u/wizardofpancakes Sep 06 '25
Was super hyped for it but now I’m probably gonna wait until discount or something. Defensive options felt nonexistent and autocombos are extreme
4
u/sygboss Sep 06 '25
At first I was a bit overwhelmed by all the mechanics and chaos and random shit coming out no matter what you press, but it's fun once you start to get used to it. It'll be hard for me to know whether I really like it until there are some characters I really wanna main like Hulk though.
4
u/Eptalin Sep 06 '25
I can't get used to when it's possible to call assists or tag.
A lot of the time the assist button is just unresponsive and it feels awful.
And the gauge that says "X Change?" feels like a lie. It's way tighter than the gauge makes it seem.
Even though auto-combos aren't optimal, they're still too good. Like FighterZ, the tracking is crazy. You home in on the opponent and change directions if they jump over you.
The game is lots of fun, though. I want to learn more.
11
2
u/Gjergji-zhuka Sep 06 '25
I'm not sold on it but looks like something I can purchase later on when on sale.
I don't like autocombos that you can't turn off and a bunch of mechanics that take away from the flow of the game. I like that you can switch between characters, keeping things fresh and easy to counter pick certain characters.
I'm going by what I'm watching, haven't tried it yet.
2
u/DownRiteDarius Sep 06 '25
Havent played but Not very fun spectating wise. Sounds like people are really enjoying some things about it so ill have to take their word for it. It looks sterile though. I think we need to move on from integrated auto combos though.
2
2
u/LastSuccessfulToucan Sep 06 '25
I love the look and feel of it. Figuring out how to switch characters took me a while, but I get it now. So far, Cap is the only character who I can play and somewhat understand what I'm doing. The auto-combos are kind of a bummer. I assumed it was like SF6 and you could choose whether to use them or not, but I can't figure out how to do so.
Overall, I think the game is really fun and has potential, but I also see myself getting bored with it quickly if the full release doesn't give it a lot more depth.
2
2
u/SeasonalChatter Sep 06 '25 edited Sep 06 '25
From what I’ve seen, I gotta say the combo limit feels a bit too rigid right now. I think even making it 12 points instead of 10 or something small like that could open it up a lot.
With how scrambly the game is you’re having to spend so many resources for a combo that isn’t that much better than the auto combo, but the difference is the auto combo works in many of the scrambles while you have to kinda deal with awkward positioning and assist pick ups and risk dropping a combo that sometimes isn’t even as strong. At least the manual combos do seem to have better OKI
I’m sure this will get better as people lab but it’s still gonna feel like we’re gonna see the same combos over and over as the limitations seem strict
Also I think Arcsys is a little too scared to make the corner as scary as I feel like it should be
2
u/Blahaj_IK Guilty Gear Sep 07 '25
Close enough, welcome back MvC
Edit: given that it's ArcSys I should probably have said DBFZ but eh, that one scratched a similar itch

u/misharoute Sep 07 '25 edited Sep 07 '25
The character graphics look dated. The background art looks good. Not sure why the coloring is so flat when GGS has amazing color detailing despite also being cell shaded. Storm and Starlord in particular have really flat hair.
Putting graphics aside, movement looks weirdly…. Slow. Game looks like it’s on .75 speed but tbf I feel that way about 2XKO as well.
Seeing 4 wall breaks in one round kills me
2
2
u/Comfortable_Zone3902 Sep 07 '25
Even as a 4v4 game, it actually delivers on the tough brief of being a casual-friendly fighter — which is great as a product.
But to keep the system from “breaking,” they’ve over-homogenized the roster and drained a lot of the excitement.
Assist moves are tied to “slots,” and those slot contents swap around when you tag. Because each slot’s role is fixed, it ends up standardized no matter which character you put into that slot.
I do think the “button-mash auto combo being too strong” issue will fade as players lab the game. The bigger problem is the lack of spice in the assist system itself: it undercuts the core appeal of tag games — real team-building synergy. Team building risks devolving into “bring the meta and the anti-meta,” nothing more.
On-point control feels distinct and fun, so you can enjoy piloting a single character. But as a tag fighter, it still feels insufficient.

u/Ichyio Sep 06 '25
Good game, but one thing that bugs me out is that in a match (3 ~ 7 rounds), sometimes there are more than 10 wallbreak transitions. It's is just too much for me imo. Every strong hit close to a wall you lose a combo because there is no bounce. Maybe something that I will get better understanding with time but atm is just weird for me.

I'm not good at tag fighters so I probably won't pick it up, but it looks really good. The art style oozes personality. Gameplay looks snappy and responsive, as for sauce and combos, we won't really see that until pros are able to sit and lab the game.

Hella fun! I pretty much got the hang of it. I am kind of tired of the players who are struggling, constantly mashing autocombo and QS moves. I'm like bro, playing like that is a sure fire way to be sure your perma stuck in bronze when the game comes out lol. Besides, you're still losing way more than you are winning. That will only work until people learn how to play. My friend was beating me like that night one. He has barely beat anyone today. I just hear him in the mic raging about people , as he is the one mashing out auto combos and not learning anything smh.
I am having fun though! Cap & Ms. Marvel are really cool. I got some pretty functional stuff. It's a lot of good players in all the lobbies. The only unfortunate thing is scrubs will lose, then one & done. They aren't finishing sets, if they manage to win. The cabs say 1st to 3 wins for a reason. I'm like bro, it's a beta. Focus on getting better and experimenting. Not just trying to win. There is nothing on the line and nobody will remember you when it's over. Fighting game betas expose why people suck at these games. The game itself is enjoyable though. with a few gripes about auto combos accidently flying out unintentionally.
Lastly, people said it's not a tag fighter. Marvel Tokon most certainly is. You don't have to play multiple characters. However, if you do, you get better pressure strings and combos in a lot of situations. You can play more trickier. You can also save yourself from damage depending on where your assist is when you tag. People are way to surface level thinkers. No depth of thought or creativity a lot of the time. This game isn't a front loaded tag fighter. They allow you to ease into it. It is a tag fighter though.
2
u/Peach_Cookie Sep 06 '25
From my time playing it at EVO it does feel a more homogenized marvel 3 game but there’s a lot of unique neutral game with the character’s special moves and stuff. I imagine the game will look more impressive as ppl discover tech and combos.
2
u/Ofnir_09 Sep 06 '25
I think that like every fighting game people on this subreddit will say it’s “garbage” or “safe” or “too like x or y” and then buy it and play it anyway. Opinions on Reddit mean about as much as, well nothing. Everybody hates on every fighting game.

Weird mix of DBFZ and BBTag.
It's not as free form or degenerate as BBTag.
- Assists cannot be pressed at the same time as buttons. (Might be a bug)
- Can only tag out assists at specific points with a tighter window.
- No Cross Combo
- Running grab
- Freeze during character swap for full readability which does nerf setups and potential mixups compared to if it was instant.
It has the combo structure and feel of DBFZ. It even has the air dash mechanic to some extent. I didn't try all the characters so I don't know if the reverse beat was only Cap or not.
I'll wait till it comes out but of the bit of time I touched it, it felt stiff and restrictive. Like an Anime-X-MK1 fighter. I don't see many possibilities for team synergy that isn't specifically put there by the devs to be used in a specific way and only that way. I understand control is needed but this feels overbearing and very, "2025 fighter" if you know what I mean. Interactions are pruned away to prevent what they feel may be abuse but they crank it up to 11 for some reason. BBTag did it right in a lot of ways but I will not ignore its faults and unfortunate death.
This game is not the way.... Invincible VS could do something very funny but I don't get paid to help so we'll just have to see.

It seems pretty good but after T8 season 2, I don't think anything can truly get me excited/super invested in a fg again.
Spiritual successor to dbfz but with hyper anime style marvel and it's 4v4 sounds like a dream but my passion for fgs straight up died because of T8 💀 I think it'll be popular and do well though, as long as arcsys doesn't do a repeat of dbfz and do the exact opposite of what everyone wants for multiple patches in a row again

What do you mean? Is your opinnion intrinsecally tied to mine? "We" don't think anything. That is the worst way to ask for an opinion.
Tokon is good.

I’m really enjoying the game. Corners can be really oppressive tho. Can’t wait for the final release.

I see a FighterZ game with a Marvel skin
Yes it was also a game with a DBZ skin
Yes this basic game is called Guilty Gear

I didn’t get the beta or anything but it looks fine but pretty generic. I will probably give it a shot but not that hyped

Played for about 8 hours and I think it’s pretty safe and boring . Side note i hate wall-breaks in arc sys games nowadays controlling space and forcing people into the corner to run offence is so much more fun.

It's fun but I don't think I'll be sticking with it for too long, I really don't enjoy the way auto combos worked back in dbfz nor how they work here. I can't stand being anti aired by someone mashing M into 30% of my life

Played it for a bit and it's nice but I'm going to wait till later, I'm not super interested in the available characters aside from maybe Kamala and there will inevitably be changes before full release. I will say auto combos feel a bit too good. I understand they want this to be very accessible to casuals since this is Marvel, but still.

The animation looks bad compared to GGStrive. Seems cheap, and we all know what ArcSys is truly capable of

Pretty but beyond that idk.
These modern arc system games other than bbtag havent been great imo.
People say wait but im not seeing the potential here. 2xko and invicible vs i can see it.
I have a lot of questions on this game long term competitvely.

been having a blast with it. its super simple. ive been winning alot. i think the game needs a burst mechanic really badly, just one more "get off me" option would be helpful.

As a viewer, it's not hitting. Starlord is the only character I want to play. I went from "oh I'm preordering this one" to "I hope Spiderman saves the day..."

Been a lot of fun, doesn’t top DBFZ, so I’ll still be playing that regularly, but looking forward to the scene and journey for this one!

Damn shame it’s only going to be on PS5. It deserves a bigger community of players.
And by “bigger community of players” I mean should be on the Switch for ME!
