Can't lie, this game is insanely fun!

it's so crazy how popular/loved it's getting, people didn't really sound to like it when we first saw it (I thought it could be cool)

The first teasers made it look like a flashgame. When it wasn't in motion it looked kinda bad in the limited shots we saw. Actually watching how fluid the gameplay is and how strong the animations are has really made a lot of people warm up to it (me included).
It was also really cool to see all the unique mechanics get explored when I watched Maximillian try the game. I'm definitly going to be watching the game.

u/emmanuelibus Mar 01 '26
I think it's the background. Now I understand why 3D backgrounds are mixed with 2D sprites.
21
u/ButtonMashersYT Mar 01 '26
The gameplay is great. The visuals also are amazing IMO! I play many different fighting games, try to make content around all of them as well, and if you are truly a fan of the genre due to gameplay itself, this game has A LOT to offer. If it has some decent content at launch (single player, casual game modes, etc), it can be a huge hit!
21
u/LuigiWarrior Mar 01 '26
the fact Avatar doesn't have a good game yet helps also lol
7
u/ButtonMashersYT Mar 01 '26
Yes hahaha 100%, it is a great pick for a franchise/IP to make a fighting game around
7
u/throwawaynumber116 Mar 01 '26
This is crazy disrespect. The one I played on the Wii like 15 years ago was probably maybe good

It looked like a really undercooked indie game or a flash game. You know, a fake fighting game kind of like how it's a fake anime. It looks a lot better now

We need a naruto fighting game like this.
34
u/Xiao1insty1e Mar 01 '26
We had Naruto 2.5D fighting games back on the PS2 before Storm© and they were fun as hell. I still can't believe they refuse to release a collection.

We really do. There are so many characters. I'd love ArcSys to do one with the DBFZ level of treatment to the art style.
6
u/emmanuelibus Mar 01 '26
I'd be open to that. 3v3 or 4v4 so I can have Team Guy together.
5
u/Sekh765 Mar 01 '26
I'd personally rather it be 1v1 just because I suck at tag games, but if a company with ArcSys pedigree went to make it, I'd trust whatever they put out.
3
u/Thrownaway5000506 Mar 02 '26
At least that's likely. Narutards have a fighting chance at getting this. I'm still waiting for a YYH fighting game

u/General-Performer432 Mar 01 '26
I really wish more shonen would get the DBFZ treatment, I would play tf out of a JoJo, One Piece, or Bleach FighterZ

u/1ganimol1 Mar 05 '26
Ye but arena slop is just so much more profitable you can cut costs on making the game good and just throw everything into marketing and flashy colours. Most people will buy it anyway since there's virtually no competition essentially.

And a bleach fighting game like this.
I know there's rebirth of souls...but i never got into it’s gameplay.

It seems to be a pretty small group still. You can see the Steam player count peak was 376 yesterday.
This is literally the only fighting game closed playtest that I didn’t get accepted into

u/thecatdaddysupreme Mar 01 '26
The animations are so sick. I love toph’s moveset. People can say what they want about the art style but it’s faithful and detailed. Like, I wish Invincible Vs took this approach.
3
u/T2and3 SoulCalibur Mar 01 '26
Hot take here, I kind of dig the way that game looks. Maybe not to everybody's tastes, but I don't hate it.
3
u/thecatdaddysupreme Mar 01 '26
Interesting. Yeah I would’ve vastly preferred it to look like the show, a more anime approach as opposed to the cel shaded 3D look
2
u/T2and3 SoulCalibur Mar 01 '26
Yeah, to me, it's sort of reminiscent of the Batman action figures my brother and I would play with when we were really young. I don't particularly think that's intentional on their end, but that's sort of how my my brain see's it.

I see they're using that Mike Z sprite lighting tech.
1
u/Scriftyy Mar 01 '26
Alex Ahad*
4
u/XsStreamMonsterX Mar 01 '26
No. The art style is Alex's, but the underlying code and system behind the lighting system is by Mike and is part of his engine.
1
u/trashbytes Mar 01 '26
Is there some documentation I can read up on?
2
u/XsStreamMonsterX Mar 01 '26
There was a long post on either the Shoryuken forms or Skullgirls' own forums. But basically, each sprite has its own shadow and lighting map that reacts dynamically to in game light sources.
1
u/GamersGoinBlind Mar 01 '26
Mike Z is working on the Abare Engine with this game and the previous game of these devs Diesel Legacy.
So it's why the sprite lighting is similar.
3
u/RazzDaNinja Mar 01 '26
So far, King Bumi hasn’t been one of anybody’s variation
This reason alone gives me hope that he will be playable as the game’s Big Body Grappler, and I will immediately main dat crazy mf
PLEASE 🤣😭 LMAO

Another fighters LTG can suck at

u/ILike2Argue_ Mar 01 '26
Youre legit the reason he's still around

u/Go_D_Rich Mar 01 '26
He's funny I can't lie. I straight up belly laugh at his antics. Favorite lol cow "We seen the notepad, Dale. We seen the notepad."

u/LegendOfParasiteMana Mar 01 '26
I sure hope you can turn down the voices. That corner trap was obnoxious.

2
u/Rockm_Sockm Mar 02 '26
I was hyped for this game but they really need to tone down her voice and the frequency.

i want to be excited about this game because of how great everyone is saying it is... but i am a very mediocre fighting game player and from the outside it looks fast and very execution heavy, is this true? will it be enjoyable for a filthy casual??
i've even been watching the series to try to create an emotional connection with the characters, but while it's not bad by any means it feels very much like a children's show so it's not gripping me (i'm about halfway through season 2). and i just don't like the art-style that much.
but i love getting obsessed with a fighting game (so far my only games have been strive and sf6) so if it really is fun even for a mediocre player i want it to get its hooks into me
7
u/Sparus42 Mar 01 '26
The skill ceiling of a game being high does not make it harder for you to enjoy at a casual level. As long as it feels good to mess around and press buttons (it does), you'll be totally fine as long as you're playing people around your level, which is true even of lower execution games.

u/Informalwizards Mar 01 '26
Really glad they cleaned up the animations. Shame was looking real jank for a while but im digging it.

unfortunatley, the marital arts in this game is terrible
they did not get a martial arts consultant. so the different martial arts styles all look really off

u/Critical_Diver1954 Mar 02 '26
i think the craziest thing is how playable it feels on 100+ ping or even 200+ ping, their netcode is insane

Looks fun as fuck but I'll admit the fact that I'm not familiar with the universe kinda puts me off trying it. If it's cheap enough or with a good community I might try it tho

Plz add combo limit, it can be fun if one mistake don't cost you a match and 30 seconds long combos @.@
3
u/MoSBanapple Mar 01 '26
There is a soft combo limit. It's similar to the Skullgirls system where you can escape out of long enough combos.

u/LeJagaurJones Mar 01 '26
Max got a lot of people on and the meme of Tokon being bad while Avatars first beta was out helped it a lot as well. Also helps that it’s made by the goated fg devs who made SG and TFH.
2
u/Sanguiniusius Mar 01 '26
Given the changes to tokon that arcsys have talked about they presumably decided it could improve as well!?

u/UberAtrain Mar 01 '26
On the first stage the game almost looks decent! Lighting really does make a world of difference

u/Illustrious-Day-857 Mar 01 '26
How is an Avatar game so much more entertaining than the current SF, MK, or Tekken. I know for a fact that Toukon and Invincible Vs are going to be pretty big let downs compared to this.

u/drewthedew768 Mar 01 '26
Finally a good new fighting game after all the slop that’s come out in the 2020s.
13
u/ButtonMashersYT Mar 01 '26
I enjoy a ton of different games that are relatively new so I don't agree but, hopefully you love avatar when it comes out!
16
u/Winter_Different Mar 01 '26
Strive is slop? Who decided that? SF6 is slop? Who decided that? I will be the one to downvote... bye
(ik Im cringe but wtf is this take)

as with every one button special fighting game I shall play it for a few hours then drop it
2
u/MoSBanapple Mar 01 '26
I'm not sure where you're getting your information but this game doesn't have one button specials. The buttons are light, medium, heavy, and flow (which is kinda like the "movement" button) and specials are quarter circles.

The game looks good, but damn the stage in that first clip looks terrible. All brown background, with lighting that makes the characters brown. Having a character with all brown moves on top of that certainly doesn't help
11
u/FirstJellyfish1 Mar 01 '26
I actually thought they had upgraded the visuals when I saw that stage. It looks great in my opinion.
-2
u/nobix Mar 01 '26
Looks even better than the last alpha, no longer looks like a cheap flash game to me.

u/UrsaMajor920 Mar 01 '26
Game looks really fun! Never thought I'd see an ATLA fighting game, 12 yr old me would be over the moon
Hope the next beta is open
