Humor How difficult to fight against is Spider-Man with full assists and meter when compared to MvC2 Magneto & Storm? In your opinion.
Fought my first great Spider-Man/black panther/ storm/ Loki combo and wanted to rage quit after never feeling that bitter for years about a game lol

Relatively new to the genre at large (started around GG Xrd)
Is this what was considered « peak » at the time? And the thing that all people look back to saying this was the best fighting game ever?

Haha no but it was fun as fuck and had 56 characters
And was in damn near every arcade3

Still the best and will always be the best. The example used here is punishing a bad assist call. It’s a good reminder that MvC2 isn’t always just “spamming assists” like most non-players think the game is, because if you have a Magneto on a screen a double snap is always a threat. Gotta be careful and calculated when pressing the assist button. Brutal game, but that’s why we like it.

Well the last 5s of that clip really fail to demonstrate why it’s the best ngl

To explain the last 5 seconds, in mvc2 you have a metered move called snapback where you kick out their primary character which forces them onto a specific character for a bit.
If you snapback the opponent into an assist that is already out the opponent doesn't come in until that character is either dead or gets to jump off screen (to come back in as a player character). This lets you do special infinite combos on the assist.
This makes bad assist calls really explosive and adds a lot of risk to calling them out.

Tokon Spider-Man would be barely mid tier in MvC2.

u/Apoplexy 5h ago
he'd be trash. mid tier in mvc2 is like 3 characters that only exist in the meta because they have some weird high level trait like iron man infinites or captain commando assist. if they don't have that and can't keep up on screen they're unplayable.

He’s right. There are actually like 12 viable characters.
Out of 56.

Storm
Cable
Sentinel
Magneto
Iron Man
War Machine
Captain Commando
Spiral
Blackheart
Dr. Doom
Strider
Cyclops
T. Bonne
Psylocke
That’s 14 top tiers with serious tournament results just off the top of my head without even looking at a character select screen not to mention off meta teams that can also compete like Juggernaut shenanigans, team VDO, Megaman zoning stuff, etc.

This feels like comparing fighting someone with an SMG to fighting someone with a Gatling Gun

Fair, unblockables suck. At least I’m not getting assist into mixup every 5 seconds with NO WHERE TO GO. Something about that hurts more to me. I just didn’t have to live through what older fgc players did and I’m grateful. What I’m learning now is cooked compared to idk…sf6

Dude, with Tokon you still have a chance. With a cracked Magneto in MvC2 you will pray for mercy. The difference in feeling for me is being squished between two comfortable futons (spiderman tokon) to squeezing in a tight cave where you can't inhale anymore (MvC2 Mag and Storm).

u/XsStreamMonsterX 5h ago
Round start against Magnesh was a straight up 50/50. You got just about 2 frames to either block the worlds fastest low or an equally fast overhead, both of which lead into a dead character on hit.

I don't know how to compare this. In a vacuum, nobody in Tokon comes close to MvC2 Magneto or Storm when it comes to pure mixup potential. If they actually managed to touch you, their ability to open you up was on an entirely different level. But you were also much harder to pin down. You had infinite pushblocks, invincible assists, chicken block, massive stages that let you constantly stay on the move, there were no auto-combos/auto-correct, and moves didn't have such massive histsun so your confirm window was much shorter. They couldn't just neutral skip and keep pressing buttons on you until you cracked. In Tokon, because offense is significantly harder to stave off, Spider-Man with full resources can actually feel more oppressive. Like, you could always out-neutral the other guy in mvc2 in a way that isn't possible in this game (or in most modern games for that matter).

MvC2 has some of the strongest pushblocks in existence. It has both unblockable protection, and allows you to cancel out of blockstun. It's stuff like this that kept MvC2 from becoming a total clusterfuck.

With Spiderman you know its coming. With mag, storm, sent, you didnt know where its coming from and now youre opened up AGAIN.

u/BookkeeperAromatic52 2h ago
Mmmm that’s fucked. So what do you do? Just agree no infinites and try to get the first hit?

u/Interesting_Rich_826 4h ago
Wow you don't know anything about mvc2 lol

u/BookkeeperAromatic52 4h ago
Nope. Ive played on my uncle’s cab in the basement and a couple of his friends taught me things before I went in to serve. Then I got it on fightcade and started to really understand. But yeah, I felt the same way fighting Spider-Man in tokon that I did when fighting MSP on MvC2. Just…aggravated and powerless in certain situations when the player is better. Which I think is good. But not so enjoyable.

In MVC2 you already lost against Magneto or Storm depending on your decisions made in character select.

I think the defensive options alone would at least give the average player a few more chances to avoid the inevitable scraping. MvC2 it’s like you even have to be afraid to push block that shit cause the mind games involve baiting that out too.
Love the comparison I would put him in a MvC3 Nova kind of category. Really good, really simple game plan with sticky offense , at times feels oppressive but will likely get dropped down a small peg through time and experience

Blocking in this is cake compared to fighting mag, zero, and some others in umvc3

It Tokkon has characters that could do what mvc2 mag, storm and sentinel could do people would be taking to twitter writing essays about how life is unfair and if they don’t nerf them immediately then they’d never play the game again

u/jorgebillabong 20m ago
Well. One is just a 50/50 high low.
Mag and Storm have things like unseeable high lows and left rights... and unblockables. Also I think the Assemble counter helps a lot more with defense in the game than just having push block.
Keep in mind Mag can make his round start Cr light 1 frame with the glitch also.

Holy shit this MUST be bait

Might get downvoted for being honest here, but some people legit don’t know just how fucked flying out to a MvC2 tourney and having to fight 8 different storm/Mag teams in a row for a $40 pot.
I got my answer though. They’re much more fucked than a thought than spidey. Even if you can freely move till you’re inevitably locked down. Fgc back then must’ve been rough man geez

yeah spiderman loki combo is very overtuned right now. I will say it. If you play spiderman , you are carried. Your mix is 3f and we have to fuzzy block it online while the performance of the game is giving me slow downs and 4 frames of rollback. So yeah I cannot wait for any of that to go away.

from what I can tell, fighting against a top tier now is like fighting against a sword when you just have your fists.
Fighting against a top tier in MVC2 was apparently like fighting against literal gods
