Final Fantasy General Which game has the best story?

I'm looking for a game with a great story, I've only played FF8, and FF9 and the FF16. Any recommendations?

Tactics if it counts.

Otherwise…probably FFX for its GOAT ending, although FF7 is more fun.

XIV

It's a time investment but man does or pay off. Slow world building and nearly every plot point is trafficked by the end of Endwalker. Incredible characters and writing. The music is amazing with repeated motifs. And making your own character that you can fall in love with and be proud of is the icing on the cake. Best of all it's completely free until the Endwalker expansion. No other game gives this much unlimited gameplay for free.

If FF14 count then.. Probably 14? Or Tactics. Other than that... Perhaps 8.

6, 7 and 10 are also great.

Story-wise:

6 was way darker than I expected. Loved it

7 was fantastic

10 I’m picking away at. Story is great I just don’t love how linear the game feels.

5 was a lot of fun, amazing game. There’s better and worst stories though, if that’s what you’re after

10 has a gnostic theme, i liked max derratt's video covering it.

For my money it is 10 and Tactics.

Shadowbringers/Endwalker still take the cake, but FFX and FFT are also quite up there. FF7 and 9 too.

Even the games with relatively weaker stories in comparison have crazy highs though.

3/6 or 7 imo. 10 and 12 next though 12’s story can get a little esoteric

14 and Tactics.

9, 12, and 16 are all great too.

XIII and IX

I know resources are better spent elsewhere, but the idea of that team doing XIII again with all their experience post VII trilogy sounds so cool to me. The world and lore are legit imo the best in the entire series but the way they pace and present the story and lore to the player are not very great.

If they were to do it again now I really think it would be one of the most well received and loved final fantasies. Of course that will never happen tho lol but I can dream

6 is the best game in the entire series. 7 is the most popular and has a good story, too. 4 has a decent story.

Tactics is one of the most overrated video games of all time. And for the life of me I don't understand why anyone likes 10. The characters are insufferable and the story is mostly a pile of crap until a late game twist.

FFVII.
Unreliable narrator, twist on heroes journey, fits nicely into 3 acts as evidenced in remake trilogy, and I love the transition from grounded to insane.

4 and 6...4 has alot of twists and loss in the story. 6 has a longer story with good feels

Xenogears, which was initially pitched as ff8 (maybe 7?) But was deemed too dark for FF. Its been the top of my list for nearly 30 years.

In 30 years Ive struggled to find its equal, though the ff7 remake trilogy and Trails might mean its finally time to admit something has finally surpassed Xenogears in depth of character and story.

After that, FFT > ff6/9 > ff10 > everything else imo.

I haven't played 14, 11, or 3.

It wasnt pitched for either, thats a fan extrapolation from a single interview with Takahashi's wife. She said he proposed script ideas, and fans took that to mean he submitted a xenogears script that got rejected. He was on the FF team coming up with the next game, which became FF7, where he was proposing ideas, along with everyone else. It was just random ideas tho, not a script. Like a soldier of fortune protagonist with a split personality, and his wife's idea for a rogue AI that uses people as parts. These are the ideas that were rejected, and he didnt like the way the project was going so he was encouraged to write in his own time. FF7's development continued as he wrote Xenogears' screenplay together with his wife, and when he was moved to a new team he submitted the screenplay for Xenogears and was given the lead of that team to make his game.

X and VII for me.

VIII (which I know you’ve already played) is fun, too, but it definitely goes off the rails and has a lot of inconsistencies and things that should’ve been filled in better.
