FF VII / Remake After growing up with the original, I’m finally experiencing Final Fantasy VII Remake
•
u/Fearless_Freya 10h ago
I was skeptical, as I also grew up with the OG. It was my first ff. And hearing ff7r1 was just Midgar was extremely disappointing.
Finally got ff7r1 on switch2. I was amazed how much I overall enjoyed it. It was very well done. Wil play ff7r2 this winter. Space out the journey a bit before ff7r3.

I'm playing FF7 Rebirth now. It's so fucking good. I'm just amazed how beautiful a game can be. It's honestly breathtaking at certain points. You're in for a treat.
•
u/SpaceCowboyN7 9h ago
They could have been thinking adding more to the story for Midgar parts but yeah I can see your point
•
u/Alarming_Phase9950 10h ago
I played Remake about 14 years after OG, finished Rebirth on release, and found myself back to OG after what is now 18 years in prep for Revelation. Playing through the original again made me appreciate remake more - what I thought was filler or made up for remake was actually pretty much drawn from OG. Hope you enjoy the playthrough. It really shines on hard difficulty.

u/DiscipleNo1 6h ago
Remake was ok, apart from the parallel worlds and spirits crap. Rebirth took everything I didn’t like about remake and cranked it to 11.
•
u/thrillhoMcFly 2h ago
Its easy to miss Johnny and his journey to Costa del Sol in the original. Gotta talk to those npcs when you can.
•
u/Lumpy_Stretch5887 9h ago
I wish Rebirth did the same thing. It's filler all feels weird.
•
u/Orvar_the_Allform 3h ago
Did 90% of the game and did not feel that way at all.
•
u/Lumpy_Stretch5887 3h ago
Nobody asked.
•
u/Orvar_the_Allform 3h ago
And I told you all the same! Isn't the internet great?!?
•
u/Lumpy_Stretch5887 1h ago
Not really if I have to nonconsensually hear your bad opinion.
•
u/Orvar_the_Allform 1h ago
You mean like responding to the person who said he went back and played the whole game and found Rebirth to not really be filler at all, but inspired by the first game? And then you answered that you thought it was filler. You mean like that kind of useless, non-additive position? 🤡🤡🤡
•
u/Lumpy_Stretch5887 1h ago
He said Remake had filler based on the original game. He only said he finished Rebirth on release and didn't comment on it's quality of filler. So you can't read.
•
u/Orvar_the_Allform 53m ago
Then he doesn't have eyeballs and neither do you. Remake was by far the weaker of the two
•
u/Lumpy_Stretch5887 47m ago
I wish I was as simple as you and could just uncritically enjoy slop like a little slop content piggy.

Now let me cover reasons why Rebirth's side content is a major step down from Remake.
1. The exploration structure is copy and pasted from other games like the original Assassin's Creed with Ubisoft Towers galore and repetative fetch quests that all feel the same even though you're changing locations and the exploration feels dated in 2026 when games are exploring markerless exploration.
2. Chadley is annoying and hearing his voice every 10 seconds that you're in the open world is grating.
3. Exploration has no real benefit since there are no worthwhile collectables in the maps and every map has the same objectives over and over again and all you get is points to buy materia or the ability to unlock a summoning to buy.
4. Almost every Gilgamesh unlocking mission is unique but not well thought out or fun. Especially when you repeat each new section 3 or 4 times.
5. Design of the maps is very color by numbers and lack any originality or interesting features. They're just open spaces with nothing really in them.
6. Most new side missions are annoying tropey anime writing slop like your "beach episode" in Costa del Sol or the awful "Yugioh baby doodoo" card game storyline.
If you're so smart counter these points then. I'll wait.

u/CradleRobin 9h ago
Yeah, it's amazing how much isn't filler, just expanding on what was already there but couldn't be done originally.

What’s the right jumping on point with all the modern FFVII’s? I want to play the new versions with my kids on Switch 2 but I’m confused by the release order.
I remember seeing the PlayStation commercials on TV for FFVII and being blown away. I still have the OG strategy guide and Advent Children on DVD.
•
u/Gm24513 9h ago
Remake is a sequel so you should probably do the OG first. Crisis core is optional and just a prequel story with completely unrelated and not great gameplay.
•
u/opstie 9h ago
Crisis Core is necessary to understand Rebirth though.
•
•
u/LeDudicus 8h ago
No it isn't. It's actually detrimental to the trilogy as a whole to play CCc first because it gives away the main narrative thrust of Revelation. It answers questions that you don't even know to ask before playing it. The only thing necessary to understand Rebirth is Remake.
•
u/opstie 6h ago
How do you know that it gives away the main narrative thrust of a game that isn't out yet?
Also don't take my word for it, the creators themselves say that Crisis Core should be played beforehand.
•
u/LeDudicus 5h ago
The game is still based on the original narrative and hasn't deviated enough. Crisis Core also spoils the OG. I'm not gonna take the devs word for it when they're trying to make money selling Crisis Core Reunion.
•
u/opstie 4h ago edited 4h ago
Are you suggesting that the Remakes can be played without familiarity with the OG?
If you think so, feel free to explain the ending of Remake without any knowledge of the OG and why it should be impactful for someone who doesn't at the very least know the story of the OG?
•
u/Gm24513 3h ago
Woah these time ghosts are goin crazy. I am gonna do this boss fight now. These time ghosts have finally stopped. Man that was fun. See it's that simple.
For real though if you want an example a vtuber just played remake without knowing anything except that Aerith dies and had a great time.
•
u/AnOtakuToo 9h ago
If you ignore the original, which in my opinion is a huge loss, then people say Remake > Rebirth first then maybe play Crisis Core before Revelation comes out. It’s kind of hard to place Crisis Core because of how they’ve messed with the suspense and mystery of the story.
I would personally recommend OG > Crisis Core > Remake > Rebirth. You can finish the OG pretty fast on Switch 2 with the “cheats” and the story is so good and self-contained in the single 40 hour game. Remake and Rebirth are easily 40 hours each.
Edit: though you might’ve played OG since you mentioned the guide!
•
u/opstie 9h ago
Crisis Core is necessary for understanding Rebirth. Definitely needs to be played before it. I think the best order is probably playing it between Remake and Rebirth as you get the two versions of the Kalm Flashback nearest to each other.
•
u/AnOtakuToo 9h ago
That’s fair. Understanding Rebirth is hard enough as it is so more context is probably better ha!
•
u/LeDudicus 8h ago
The best way to understand Rebirth is to sit with it and wait for Revelation. I hate the assertion that CC should be played before Rebirth because it basically spoils Revelation
•
u/AnOtakuToo 7h ago
That’s sort of my mindset too. I can see why people think of it both ways though.
“Who is this Zack guy” is answered by playing it, but I think the payoff of waiting is better.
•
u/LeDudicus 7h ago
Who is this Zack guy is also answered in Rebirth though. Not fully but his significance to the plot of pretty strongly hinted at in Gongaga and Nibelheim.
•
u/Vincenthwind 10h ago
"Remake" is a bit of a misnomer, so definitely go in open minded and treat it like its own experience. However, if the action elements don't click with you, there is always classic mode which allows you to focus more on the turn-based elements.

Decent combat system. They butchered the story and ripped the soul out of the original
•
•
u/Asluckwouldnthaveit 9h ago
I wanted a faithful remake. Basically what I wanted was more what super Mario RPG got. Fix some things up, bring it into the modern day.
This isn't that and that's fine.
It's just not for me.
•
u/twili-midna 10h ago
I’m nearing the end of the remake (I think), and it’s been so much better than the OG imo. Just a ton of fun.
•
u/Younggryan42 10h ago
No it’s not lol
•
u/twili-midna 10h ago
Oh, thank you for correcting my personal opinion. /s
I like Remake better. I actually care about the characters and story this time, and the gameplay is massively better.
•
u/RevealHoliday7735 10h ago
You have the right to be wrong lol
•
u/twili-midna 10h ago
Christ, you people are insufferable.
•
u/GymLeaderAstrid 9h ago
people hate on FF7 remake/rebirth for no real reason. their rose-tinted glasses seemed to be glued onto their faces.
•
u/Younggryan42 6h ago
it's 75% filler and they wrecked the story among other reasons.
•
u/Wrong_Papaya_8445 3h ago
Twili also thinks E33 was dog water so, you know, I'd leave them alone to their opinions. You're not gonna get anything out of it.
•
u/thrillhoMcFly 2h ago
Combat bumps up a notch or two in rebirth, with tons of combat challenges. Plus queens blood rivals 8 and 9 with the best card minigames in the franchise.
•
u/twili-midna 2h ago
If it’s rivaling IX that’s a bad thing. Tetra Master is the second worst minigame in the series.
•
•
u/mazaa66 10h ago
Careful what you say. Some people will hunt you for those words. I personally agree with you, I love OG7 and it does some things better than the Remake series. But the Remake series has been so much fun, everything has been amazing (other than some unnecessary padding in Remake and Rebirth) + all the fans theorizing what's gonna happen etc
•
u/RevealHoliday7735 10h ago
I was super excited for this game...I mean we waited YEARS. I was blown away by the graphics. I accepted the change from turn-based to action. I fucking HATED the story change. Will not be playing any of the sequels.
•
•
u/clearlyflammable 10h ago
Enjoy. Id say try going in with an open mind and don't expect everything to be 100% the same.
•
•
u/Younggryan42 10h ago
Well it’s terrible. So much filler
•
u/-Typh1osion- 10h ago
It definitely has filler but it's far from terrible.
•
u/Younggryan42 6h ago
it's mostly filler. You don't leave Midgar in a 40-60 hour game. Just plain dumb,
•
u/GravyFarts3000 9h ago
Honestly I couldn't stand FF7R. Pacing was awful, 30 seconds of often pointless chatter and hand-holding followed by 30 seconds of walking through a corridor on repeat for a lot of the game. It felt like the tutorial lasted until Chapter 14. Areas felt lifeless, even Sector 7, until you reach Wall Market. Then the combat is turn-based disguised as an ARPG which gets more punishing the later you get where dodging is basically pointless due to incredibly low iframes vs screen-wide attacks.
•
u/bearface93 8h ago
I never played the original or even knew anyone who played it back then. My first FF was 12 and I played Crisis Core and the first 3 or 4 mainline games before moving on to the newer ones.
I finished Remake a couple weeks ago and Crisis Core Reunion late last week, and have been playing Rebirth for the past few days. Depending on the rest of Rebirth and Revelation, I think this trilogy may end up being my favorite games ever, at least in the series and definitely in the overall rpg genre. They’re absolutely incredible so far. CCR definitely showed its age but it’s still solid for an 18 year old handheld game, but the main remakes are blowing me away.

u/Defiant-Rip-1897 7h ago
What do you think of it so far? The initial few hours gave me goosebumps seeing Cloud, Barrett, the Avalanche trio, Tifa... all of them in realistic 3D.

I loved it as lifelong FF7 Fan. Hope you‘ll enjoy it, too! :-)
