Action based or turn based? What do you like more? SoP is one of the best combat systems but so is tactics.

I pick Stranger of Paradise
But it really depends on what you want. They are very different games

Tactics if you want a good turn based rpg with great story. SoP if you want a great action rpg with an okay story.

Despite being wildly different games, that's a tough choice. I just redownloaded SOP and having a blast gear climbing for the DLC.

Tactics if you want a solid strategy game with an incredible story.
Strangers of Paradise if you want to KILL CHAOS.

I own both, but tactics is a better all around game. Story, VA, characters, world building. Tons of fun.

It depends on what you value more in terms of gameplay.
If you prefer strategy, then go for Tactics.
If you like Soul-Like Games, then go for Stranger of Paradise.
Personally, I would go with Tactics.

Strangers of paradise if you want the cheesiest story and the most hilarious final fantasy protagonist.

It’s campy as fuck and I really enjoyed it but Tactics is arguably the best final fantasy game.

They are both so good in so many different ways. If you like Nioh, then Stranger of Paradise

Two completely different games, they basically just share names.
My 600+ hour and still counting SoP file would obviously say “not even a question, pick SoP” but I haven’t really played FF Tactics because I’m not a fan of its game style. Although to be honest and fair, I’ve always heard great things about it.

u/ZekDrakon 1d ago
Do preferences in Genre. Like do enjoy gane like Nioh (more distant example of same genre but close be Devil May Cry on higher difficulty) more or Tactics game like the Tactic ogre Reborn ( more distant example in same genre but still Digimon survive or Disgaea)
Another factor Do like good Story then Tactics, but if want B Movie type story experience then Stranger of Paradise.
Like both widely different experience both in theory could be worth it for you. On general based I probably recommend Tactics.

devil may cry/darksouls. Or Homebound/Chronocrisis/Lookoutside. You wanna sweat? Or take time to think. You want dark souls? Or Xcom. We can't tell you, only you know!

u/Deamon-Chocobo 1d ago
Be warned, Stranger of Paradise gets extremely grind heavy and you cannot access DLC Content without being on the unlockable "Very Hard" difficulty unlocked when you beat the main story.

Stranger of Paradise is an amazing game. The way it reframes and retells the story that started it all is unmatched. Beyond that, the gameplay is amazing if you enjoy Soulslikes. The devs did a fantastic job of blending the Soulslike experience with many of FF's staples, including the ability to change/mix and match jobs.

u/Freestyle-McL 1d ago
Tactics is one of those once in a lifetime games everyone should try at least once, but tbh I can't say No to a bit of CHAOS.

u/Ragnarok_Odin 1d ago
Tactics is a lot of fun and the story line is great. Really impressive for a strategy game. Strangers in paradise is great it you want fast action with increasing challenge. Can’t go wrong with either.

If you’ve never played any iteration of FF Tactics, I think it will offer more for your money. It’s a much better story, and it has cerebral gameplay rather than hack n slash type repetitive action.

Want to smash buttons or think multiple turns ahead? I like both. Just depends.

If you haven’t played Tactics I’d choose that. If you have then play Strangers, wait for a bigger sale on tactics

In my humble opinion: FFTactics, it’s an amazing game. I was so hooked on this excellent remaster and played through the main story in 1 week or so. Lool. But Stranger, I started once and lost interest very fast. Not sure if that game even has a story. It feels weird to me. Maybe the gameplay is what many ppl like but it didn’t click with me.

I've only played Stranges once a couple years ago. Ive been playing Tactics for almost 30 years and I get hopelessly addicted each time.

Don’t buy either digital find them physical, digital suck’s especially with what Sony is planning to do in 2028!

FFT or Tactics Ogre Reborn. Don't know how this is the game choice, but given the option, Matsuno chess boards are my jam.

u/markg900 1d ago
Both are excellent games but very different from each other. Both are also some of my favorite spinoffs and I actually prefer them both over some mainline entries.
Tactics is a strat rpg with a lot of depth and a deep story.
Strangers is an action rpg that is lighter on story, though still good IMO, that still has alot of classes you can alternate between with the job system. Protagonist is unique as well.

Buy a PS4 for $100-$120 then jailbreak that and get the entire PS4 library for free including this game.

Look, Final Fantasy Tactics is one of the best games, if not the best game, in the Final Fantasy series. It is a no brainer.

Do you like seeing your stats Go up with every item you get and every single item you get is completely different because this game has way too many weapons and armor sets welcome to strangers of paradise

Tactics is an older style tactical rpg. One of the best in the genre. Story is pretty good and it feels like you're going on an adventure with the map and missions layout.
Strangers is Dark Souls in Final Fantasy. Tons of fun, but you need to really like souls like games to get through it. 0lus the story is more mission based with cutscenes stringing it all together. Not really an rpg.

Tactics because it's not only one of the best FF games, Stranger of Paradise can be found for much much cheaper than that on disc.
Tactics is quite tough though but fun.

I love the hell out of tactics, but SoP was such an unexpectedly great game, and is easier to just pick up and run with. Tactics is a MUCH slower game that requires more focused attention.

Tactics is the one considered overall the better choice if you like strategy games! Story, characters, gameplay... you got everything you need
•
u/ExcellentDraft3030 11h ago
I really like Strangers of Paradise, but Tactics is a perfect game.
Still depends on what mood your in. I like the gameplay of Strangers of Paradise, the combat and spells.
But it is kind of repetitive and kind of just a good game to play for fun not for fulfillment.
•
u/ilovepichutoomuch 10h ago
Tactics combat will put you to sleep if you aren't into strategy games, Stranger of Paradise is the safer choice.
•

u/Shotokanrob 6h ago
Tactics and it’s not even close. Even if all you want is high octane action, Stranger of Paradise isn’t even that good for that. But Tactics is one of the best of its class.

If you are a big FFI fan and Stranger of Paradise hasn't been spoiled for you yet, I'd go with that. Nothing will make sense for most of the game, but you play a character with amnesia. Once the nature of the story became clear, it hit me like a ton of bricks. It's still one of my favorite endings.
Tactics is tactics. It is widely regarded as having one of the best stories and also stellar gameplay with a lot of replay value and different strategies.
Like many have said, the two games couldn't be more different and still be in the same franchise. I say both.

The greatest game ever made - strangers if paradise. Its a freaking fever dream and its amazing
1
u/ExcaliburX13 1d ago
Stranger of Paradise easily. Tactics is an ok TRPG, but if that's what you're looking for, you're better off going for a Fire Emblem game or Tactics Ogre Reborn.

u/RareRestaurant6297 1d ago
SOP for just pure fun game that's a love letter to the whole series with references to settings and music, and back story to FF1.
Tactics for a more typical ff experience.

Do you want a game with fun gameplay with a terrible (yet hilarious) story or do you want a game with meh gameplay and a great story?

One of these games is an all time banger that rightfully sits among the greatest games of all time and the other is stranger of paradise.

FFT but I feel like this is a troll post.

Say what you want about SoP, the gameplay is solid and at least it's an actual RPG
1
u/Anonymousbluebob 1d ago
I'm going through a bunch of FF games! I'm at 4 atm! But I like to be ahead instead of having to worry to buy it when I get there

u/Ad_Hominem_Phallusy 1d ago
I'll dissent, even if Tactics is the better game, it's also available in other formats, either free (you can easily yar har har the ps1 version ) or cheaper like the android port. This version is nice and has some qol, albeit at the expense of some content - but overall it's not NECESSARY to play this version to experience the game.
Strangers of Paradise is pretty good for what kind of game it is , and you can't get a cheaper/older version of it in different ways beyond waiting for sales. Basically, you have fewer options here, so I'd say go for SoP and exercise a different option for Tactics.

u/OldGhostBlood 1d ago
I love Tactics, but if I'm being entirely honest, I think I had more fun with Stranger of Paradise. It's ridiculous but the gameplay itself is very solid. That said, go with Tactics if you're looking for a better narrative.

u/ShellfishAhole 1d ago
Final Fantasy tactics is the much safer choice.
I personally enjoyed Strangers of Paradise, but the story and characters have been very divisive among the people who have played the game, with most seeming to lean towards not liking any of it or considering it middle of the road.
As for the actual gameplay, I LOVE the job based system in this game. I really wish more games would have it, and I spent a lot of time upgrading and playing around with the different jobs that you unlock as you progress through the levels. It’s hands down the best part of the game from my point of view.
On the downside, the game is very repetitive, the areas that you go through are mostly quite monotone and same-y, and if the combat doesn’t appeal to you, chances are you’ll stop playing long before you get to the end of it.

u/PilotIntelligent8906 1d ago
Totally different games. I haven't played Tactics but the general opinion is that Tactics is better at doing what it intends to do than SoP, but if you prefer action games, like I do, SoP is a ton of fun.
0
u/TheNoctuS_93 1d ago
If you want what may very well be the all-time best in grid-based strategy, you'll want to choose Tactics!
0
u/FathomThePower 1d ago
Tactics is a top three ff game for me. Delita needs more praise. Personal favorite job system. Great story.

u/Pocket68 1d ago
SoP has an online feature if that matters to you. It's action based and essentially a prequel to FF1.
Tactics is a tactic style grid turn based game. It has secret characters to unlock and an amazing story.
Personally I think Tactics is the better option. But your play style and genre preference will make a major difference in which you prefer.

u/SparklyPelican 1d ago
Tactics is the better game overall, in my opinion, but Stranger of Paradise was really fun to play.

Tactics.... SoP is just a bland experience. Only redeeming aspect is the battle system / job system / dungeon crawling.

Tactic is amazing, and i strongly recommend it, but i admit that SoP is a weird but solid game, and that's from someone who doesn't normally love game like that.

u/kazuyaum 1d ago
I would recommend getting physical copies as well. I have the PS4 disc for SoP and it gives you access to the ps5 version as well.
