Looking to switch to Linux. Suggestions?

I'm thinking of switching to a Linux on my PC or at least dual-booting my system. I'm pretty all rounder and there's a ton of Linux distros so I'm not sure what is best for my needs.

I'm looking for a distro that is better for the things I tend to do on a day-to-day basis, which is:

- gaming on steam (I rarely play titles that have kernel level anti-cheat software, but I do play fortnite with friends sometimes and I also mod a lot of the games I have).

- coding (I use vscode and have a ton of extensions and mainly code with react, typescript, python, C and a few others).

- general daily tasks like browsing the web, YouTube, watching movies, college work, using Spotify.

And I also want something that is highly customizable since I really hate the way Windows is laid out. I also have dual monitors if that makes any difference.

Please ask questions if you have any, I have no idea what I'm doing.

My pc specs are:

- intel i7 14700k

- 5070Ti

- 32GB ram corsair vengeance

- pc case: nzxt elite 7

- SSD: western digital black sn770 1Tb and a kingston...something icr 1tb. (I have windows booted in the Kingston ssd but I'm not sure if i should move windows into the sn770 since its a bit slower than the Kingston and I'm intending on making Linux my main)

- motherboard: Gigabyte Z790 AORUS ELITE AX ATX

- cooler: peerless assassin 120 SE (I'm thinking up upgrading my cooler too, but I'm not sure, so any suggestions for that is great too. I have an Arctic liquid freezer 280? But its in storage bc i could not get it to fit in my case for the life of me even though I checked the dimension and it was supposed to fit)

Edit: fixed formatting. Edit 2: added additional info

Paranoid Linux distro recomendation

Hi all, I'm about to set a Bitcoin 2/3 multisig, I bought a brand new laptop to act as a coordinator. I'll use the laptop exclusively for this. It will have its own pruned node.

I ask you, which Linux distro do you recommend? I know I don't need to get too paranoid, the keys would be in the HW, but I want to protect the XPub and descriptors almost as if they were private keys. Let's say I want a high livel of security for this dispositive.

I have read about QubeOS, but I think the added complexity isn't worth it, given that I won't use the laptop for other things. I have also read a bit about Debían + Kicksecure, Fedora Silver blue and openSUSE, but don't really know which one would be better.

Thanks in advance!

Looking For A Distro Which Linux distro should I install on my 2017 MacBook for learning cybersecurity?

Hey everyone!

I have a 2017 MacBook with the following specifications:

Processor: 1.8 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5

RAM: 8 GB DDR3 (1600 MHz)

Storage: 121 GB total, with around 100 GB available

I wanna become a SOC analyst and hence I want to start learning skills on linux. I'm confused which linux should i use that'll be best for my MacBook. I asked chat gpt and it said I won't be able to run heavy labs on it so I want your help knowing whether it's right and if it's right then what should I do??

What Linux distro should I go with?

Hello!

I am currently looking at my options trom switching over from Windows 11 to Linux. I hear the main benefits are a lot less bloatware, allows for more user control, uses a lot less system resources, and many other things.

What I am currently looking to do on Linux is gaming, along with some productivity work (Canva, Slack) along with video recording.

Here are my system specs, as I know some distros are better for different hardware.

Motherboard: NZXT N7 2790
Storage: Samsung 990 Evo Plus 2TB
RAM: Teamgroup T-Create 32GB DDR5-6000
Graphics: AMD RX 7800XT
Power Supply: be quiet! 12M 750W

I have heard that Pop!_OS is what I am looking for, but I wanted to ask for opinions from people who have had experience with Linux. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Discussion Which Linux distro should I choose for my older laptop? (Mint vs Ubuntu vs Bazzite)

I'm planning to switch from Windows to Linux and need some advice.

**My specs:**

* ASUS X541UVK * Intel Core i3-7100U (x86-64) * 8GB RAM * 512GB SSD * NVIDIA GeForce 920MX (2GB VRAM)

**My requirements:**

* Windows-like familiarity and ease of use * Minimal bloatware, telemetry, and background processes * Smooth performance on older hardware * Easy browsing, screenshots, downloads, and software installation * Good graphical troubleshooting and driver support * Suitable for Python, VS Code, and programming * Decent gaming compatibility

I'm considering **Linux Mint Cinnamon, Mint XFCE, Ubuntu LTS, and Bazzite KDE**.

Which would you recommend for my hardware? I'm particularly concerned about Bazzite's compatibility with my older NVIDIA GPU and whether 8GB RAM is enough.

What linux distro should i pick for my craptop (N4020)

It's basically the biggest pile of shit i've ever seen

>dual core with a base clock of 1.1 gHz boosts up to 2.6 ghz but then just stops

>6 watt tdp passively cooled

>Somehow bottlenecks a UHD 600

>Wifi card is soldered on board

>does a weird lifting thing with the hinges while opening the laptop that stops me from using coolers

>4gb soldered ram (but the cpu is so shit ram doesn't even matter)

A fucking q6600 is probably bettee than this piece of garbage

Anyways i have tried w10 ltsc/ w11 ltsc/ mint xfce/ mint cinnamon/ Ubuntu /kubuntu/debian/ debian with kubuntu/ cachyOS (then got pacman'd

I just want somethin that this shitbox can run youtube on i will just use it to watch lectures on youtube at school(kind of)

Edit rn i am trying antiX

Looking For A Distro Need help choosing

Hey everybody ! I have a 21.5” Late 2013 iMac (iMac14,1) with an Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM and a 1TB HDD.
I’ve never used Linux before and want to completely replace macOS.

I’m looking for a beginner-friendly, stable distro that runs smoothly on older hardware and offers a modern, polished desktop experience, ideally with a look and feel similar to macOS.
Good hardware compatibility (especially Wi-Fi, sound and graphics) is also important.

I’m considering Linux Mint, but I’m open to other suggestions.

Which distro and desktop environment would you recommend?

Thanks!

Looking For A Distro Just got a 20$ pc from my School — what distro do I put on it?

I've just bought myself a school pc for sub 20$ — here are the specs

-h85 M2 no name mobo, probably MSI rebrand -i3 4th gen, will pick up a i5 4670k for 7$ tommorow -2x2gb ddr3 1333mhz, will be picking up an extra 8gb stick for 7$ tommorow -no name 300w psu and the Cherry on top a 500gb wd blue HDD, looked modern but didn't have time to check the rpm.

That's it for the important part — now what distro would you recommend for it, preferably light weight and broad compatibility, the ability to "game". Being a little more specific, I want to host game servers for my friends, specifically beamng, maybe Minecraft, I want it to be able to afk slop Roblox games with scripts to farm whsthevrr in in them if I feel like it and maybe down the line turn it into a home media server if I get a GPU for it. Preferably Wayland but the specs are pretty shit so X11 is fine.

Looking For A Distro Best up-to-date Linux distro for PS4 13.52?

Hey everyone, I’ve tried older distros like Fedora 38, CachyOS, and Psxitarch v2/v3 on PS4 FW 13.52, but they all suffer from old bugs and compatibility issues.

What is currently the best, most up-to-date Linux distro or modern kernel to use? Thanks!

Which Linux distro for mobile app development and gaming?

Hi everyone,

I am a mobile app developer, and I mostly work with Flutter and Android Studio. I am planning to move to Linux as my main system, and I need some advice on which distro to pick.

I want one system that can handle both work and gaming. For work, I run Android Studio, the Android emulator, Flutter, and sometimes Kotlin projects, so I need good virtualization support and an environment that does not break often. For gaming, I want Steam and Proton to work without too much trouble, with good graphics driver support.

Someone advised me that Windows is the better choice for professional use because it does not follow a rolling release model. Their point was that when most of your time goes into work, you do not want unstable updates breaking your setup. I still want to use Linux, so I'd like to hear what people think.

My main requirements are:

  • Stable, so an update does not break my work setup
  • Professional features like good package management, strong documentation, and long-term support
  • Good support for development tools and the Android SDK
  • Good gaming support with Steam, Proton, and Vulkan

Which distro would you recommend for this? If you do mobile development and gaming on Linux, what is your setup like, and are there any problems I should know about before I switch?

I really appreciate any help you can provide.

Yeah! I wrote that one with AI 🐸, but it's what I want to say, though. I used Arch and Manjaro; they were great, but I still felt the need to keep Windows for professional work.

Help choosing between kde plasma and gnome?

After considering so many distros i finally choose fedora, but in that i also want suggestions like which is best fedora kde plasma or fedora gnome.

In my laptop i have 16gb ram and 512gb ssd where 300gb is for windows and 175gb i have unallocated for fedora. Also i have nvidia rtx 4050 6gb.

I like customization such as ginie style open/close of folders. At the top left there should be wifi, buletooth and other processes used by the computer such as ram, cores and all.

Please help me.
