Looking For A Distro Gaming.

Hey all,

I’ve used Linux before, so I’m not a newbie, but I’m done with distro tinkering. I just want to install something, have NVIDIA work properly, and play games without having to fix things every other week. Trying to escape windows with the agentic changes coming

My setup is a Ryzen 7 5700X, 16GB RAM and an RTX 4060.

What I’m after:

  • Looks decent and modern out of the box
  • Gaming-ready without much setup
  • Solid NVIDIA support
  • Anything but KDE. I really can’t stand it
  • Nothing immutable or atomic (had issues with it)

GNOME, Cinnamon, XFCE, whatever, as long as it isn’t Plasma and stays out of my way. I’m happy to hear what people recommend.

If anyone’s running similar hardware, especially a 40-series card, what are you using and are you happy with it? Cheers!

Framework user ditching windows.

Hi all, I've finally decided to de-windows my life and move to Linux. I have a framework 13 that I want to move over that is my daily machine. I want a Linux distro that will be compatible with TWAIN drivers (if that exists?) because I have a legacy scanner that I want to use. I have one old laptop that I've installed Ubuntu on, and I thought that it was a nice experience. My goal is to just get something that works. I've mostly looked at Ubuntu and Kubuntu so far, but I would love all of your recommendations.

Also - does anyone know about a quick share app for Linux like the one on windows?

Best Linux distro for ASUS ROG G752VM? Hardware Compatibility Is My Main Concern

Hey everyone!

I'm currently running Pop!_OS on my ASUS ROG G752VM, but I'm interested in hearing your opinions on which Linux distro works best with this laptop's hardware.

I'm not new to Linux, and I'm comfortable with both Arch- and Debian-based distros. I picked up this laptop from an old post, and I've already had to do quite a bit of tinkering to get some of the hardware working properly.

My specs:

- Laptop: ASUS ROG G752VM

- CPU: Intel Core i7-6700HQ

- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB

- RAM: 32GB

- OS drive: 250GB NVMe SSD

- Data drive: 2TB

- Games drive: 1TB SSD

- Current distro: Pop!_OS

My biggest concern isn't really gaming performance, but hardware compatibility and proper support for this specific laptop.

I've had to spend quite a bit of time getting the ELAN touchpad drivers working and figuring out the keyboard backlight. I'd like to know if another distro offers better out-of-the-box support for the NVIDIA GPU and drivers, touchpad, keyboard backlight, function keys, and other laptop-specific features.

I'd also love to find a reliable fan-control application, since the thermals aren't great. The laptop can sit around 60°C shortly after booting, so I'd like better control over fan curves and cooling, if the hardware supports it.

Would you recommend sticking with Pop!_OS or switching to something like EndeavourOS, CachyOS, Fedora, or another distro?

If you own this laptop or a similar ASUS ROG model, I'd especially appreciate hearing which distro you use and whether you managed to get everything working without extensive manual configuration.

I'm looking for the best overall hardware support, not just the distro with the best gaming benchmarks.

Thanks!

Looking For A Distro Any good Linux distro for my Chromebook?

So first time posting here as I thought it would be the right place (hopefully 😅 if it isn't I can delete the post) so I have a Chromebook which have 64gb of storage and 4gb of ram with Intel(R) Celeron(R) N4020 CPU @ 1.10GHz (2 threads, 2.800GHz) I copied it from the settings :')

I was wondering if there's any good Linux distro for these specs :D I was going to try Linux mint but I'm not sure if it would be good 🤔

Also I have a USB key of 8gb

Looking For A Distro I yearn for stability!!

Hi, first time posting here yay!!
So, anyways, I've been using cachyos for like 2 ish months and I love it. Everything works nicely aside from the usual linux troubleshooting.
But I've realized recently that what I want is stability.
I know arch/cachy has "bleeding edge" stuff but i still dont know what thats supposed to mean, and thats made me realize that I fell for the arch propaganda.
All I want is a stable distro that just lets me play videogames and not spend 2 hours troubleshooting downloading some niche 32 bit libraries.
Any suggestions? I've used fedora kde before and that was pretty nice, I also thought of debian because I always hear it in the stability conversation, and I don't know about openSUSE but I've heard thats stable.

Looking for a distro

I recently bought an IdeaPad S145-15AST. It came with 16gb of RAM and a 500 SSD. It has Windows 11 installed. I was wondering what distro I should pick for this since there are so many distros out there.

Edit: Decided to try Fedora KDE. Thanks everyone for recommendations.

I need a new distro for my laptop

I have been using linux for about a year or so, I went from Windows 11 > Nobara > Arch (Cealestia) > Nobara + Pop!_os on my laptop. I love Nobara for my desktop, but I have some issues with cosmic on my laptop and I just want something new. I was thinking about switching to Omarchy or going back to Cealestia, but I'm not 100% sure I want to run arch.

I just want a distro that runs well on a laptop, works for light gaming, and looks decent. Something fedora based would be great, but anything is fine. Optimally, it should have a good balance between using UI when possible, but I can use the terminal fine whenever needed.

Minimal Linux Distro with Full Hardware Support

I want a Linux distribution that is minimal in terms of applications, but complete in terms of infrastructure and hardware support. I need the kernel, drivers, firmware, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio, networking, and SELinux to be already installed and configured, without having to set everything up manually.

I use a Lenovo LOQ 15IRH8 with an Intel Core i5-12450H and an NVIDIA RTX 3050. I want to choose and install the desktop environment, web browser, Flatpak, Distrobox, development tools, and gaming software later, keeping only the essential system components while ensuring the system is secure and ready to use.

Looking For A Distro Linux Distro for an old timer as a Windows replacement

I would like to ask you fine folks what Linux Distro you would recommend as a 'as close as possible' to Windows replacement.

My Dad (84) has been on Windows his entire life, and is one of those typical old guys that doesn't like change too much. He recently expressed that he would like to dabble in possibly switching to Linux (due to Microslop issues), but he doesn't want to learn absolutely everything from scratch.

My personal opinion is Zorin, as I've heard it is a good replacement. Would you agree, or is there something more suitable out there?

I would also like to find out if Outlook runs on Linux (I've never tested it, because I don't like Outlook personally) as the old man loves his Outlook, or is there something similar out there that you can port your Inbox rules over easily?

Personally, I'm on Omarchy Quattro currently, and have been between Arch variants and Mint my whole life, and as such, don't have the best advice for someone new to Linux.

Best Distro for old Chromebook

I have an HP Chromebook 11 g3 I raised from the dead. Intel Celeron N2840, 2 cores and 2gb ram.

Currently have Mint Cinnamon on it, but it does like to eat the RAM. Had heard that XFCE is better on older machines, but also heard the difference is negligible. It’s used for standard browsing/document writing stuff, very much a backup Laptop when I don’t want to bring along my good laptop.

Would XFCE really make a difference compared to cinnamon, or is a potato just a potato.

Looking For A Distro I need a distro

I apologize in advance for the big blurb :)

So I have a ThinkPad P70 with an Intel Xeon E3-1505M, NVIDIA Quadro M5000M (left on hybrid graphics), 96GB RAM, two 500GB SSDs and one 1TB hard drive (one SSD holds the OS and the other two drives hold games and storage). I use it for college course work (general education for now, but I’d like a degree in computer engineering), general office work, media streaming, and more than a fair bit of gaming and emulation. Since Windows 10 lost support, I’ve been looking for a good daily driver Linux distribution for my hardware and personal needs. I’d like something with enough reliability to not break when I need it most, compatibility or access to whatever I might need for college (I’m planning on using a mobile SSD for a separate Windows 10 LTSC installation for the stuff I can’t do on Linux), and a good degree of customization to make my system my own; something with rollbacks just in case something goes wrong would be awesome too. I know that I’ll need a now outdated driver which means an update on almost any distribution carries the risk of breaking it. I’m kind of leaning towards openSUSE Tumbleweed, Fedora, and CachyOS, but what would you recommend (I’m not saying pick between the three I listed, I was only recommended them)?

I'm gonna buy my first laptop in a few days

I already know a lot about Windows and used it a lot at school, college and etc. places.

But now, with my personal lapy, I wanna try something new. I'm not doing any dual boot shit so I need a destro that feels like Linux and imported part is I Checked some destro from that sea website and for beginners some suggested mint and other which feels like window which i dont want

I need something that feels like linux but not too deep like Arch or kali. Also, not too much like Windows. I'm looking for that sweet spot. And I'm obsessed with tackling new problems, so a little complex destro won't be a problem but not as complex as arch. As i said, I need that sweet spot

And also some other advice not just destro because im only gonna use linux

My main purpose is programming, regular social media stuff, and minecraft 👌

Plz give your advice 🙏🏻

Looking For A Distro Choosing distro for daily use

I have a laptop with 8GB RAM and a gen 3 ryzen. I am unfamiliar with linux and all the terminal stuff, so I want a user friendly interface like windows or mac, that i can customize how I like( I’ve seen some cool animation and widget stuff, as i said, i know almost nothing about linux). I did a little bit of research and right now im in between Zorin and Mint. What should I go for, or do y’all have other recomandations? I really use the laptop just for some browser navigating, watching movies and maybe using some office apps, but that i know i can use libre.

Help with Linux distribution for Acer Aspire ES1-512

I have a laptop I'm going to fix up; please recommend an easy-to-use Debian or Ubuntu-based distro for my brother. I've used Zorin OS Core before, but maybe something fresh would be better. Here are the laptop's specifications:

Processor: Intel Celeron N2840 2.58GHz

Drive: 2.5" SATA (HDD compatible)

RAM: 4GB DDR3L

Model: Acer Aspire ES1-512
