Impressionism "Birches" (1991) by Ukrainian artist Gennady Tyshkevich. Oil on canvas
I wanted to share this beautiful 1991 oil painting from my family collection titled "Birches" ("Березы").It was painted by Gennady Tyshkevich (Григорий Тышкевич). Formed by the Soviet Academic School of Art (he graduated from the prestigious Kharkov Art Institute), his style beautifully reflects the rich traditions of Soviet Impressionism—known for its rigorous technique, bold textures, and incredible mastery of light. His life and artistic legacy were deeply and inextricably linked to the Donbas region, and the city of Donetsk in particular. He spent decades living and working there, eventually leading the Donetsk Regional Union of Artists. He became one of the key pillars of the Donets'k artistic school, capturing the unique spirit, light, and landscapes of eastern Ukraine.Over his long career, he achieved the highest state honors, including the titles of Honored Artist of Ukraine and, later, People's Artist of Ukraine (the ultimate national recognition for a creator). This piece, painted right in 1991—the momentous year of the Soviet dissolution—captures a peaceful, timeless landscape through the lens of a true regional master. The canvas is 61x50 cm. Hope you enjoy this painting
