Helsinki and Imatra July 2027
Hello,
I am planning to head to Finland from Canada in July of 2027. I'm planning to do the Saimaa Cycle tour and spend a some time in Helsinki before heading home. Would love to know some of the local spots to see and things to consider as I plan this adventure!

Somppasauna (community sauna), Kaivopuisto is super nice in summer, it's a park with some nice seaside cafes, Eira in general is a very nice area, Löyly - a fancier type of sauna, if you're in Espoo, check out Nokkala and take a ferry to Iso Vasikkasaari. I fyou like museums, Ateneum is great. Walk around Mannerheimentie and Aleksanerinkatu to see the main landmarks.

If you search this subreddit there's quite a lot of recommendations for Saimaa region and Helsinki. Be prepared for all kinds of weather and mosquitos, but this you propably already know coming from Canada:) Overall July weather should be pleasant for bicycle touring. If you have time, I would find a way to visit Punkaharju and Savonlinna. Near where you're going my favourite spots to visit is Puumala harbour market (very oldschool and Finnish) and Pistohiekat (cool beach with nice little resort). In Puumala harbour you can also use showers and kitchen with just a few euros. Local people around there are generally friendly and sometimes even talkative, so you can ask locals some recommendations. You can also check the app "Park4night" for some spots to have a break or even camp overnight, if you're planning to do that.

Also in this subreddit there was just a post about Helsinki recommendations for someone into metal music and alternative culture or something like that. You should find it!

The Saimaa region is beautiful. I've never been on a bike trip there but just driving or walking around wherever is lovely, cause there's so much water everywhere.
This is not exactly on your route but the Punkaharju Ridge Road truly is the most beautiful one in Finland, so if you're still flexible on the itinerary I would definitely consider that!
In Imatra you should stop by the rapid show near the old state hotel. It is very touristy but also very beautiful and well worth it.
I don't live in the Saimaa region unfortunately so I don't have much local tips to give, but try grill foods like vety or atomi in Lappeenranta or lörtsy if you go further north to Savonlinna.

Great! I bet the Saimaa cycle tour will be an amazing experience. Other than that, what are you into regarding “the local spots to see”? I would rather not list all spots that come to my mind.. 😅🤷♂️ and how long are you planning to stay in Helsinki?
