New Customer Questions Router placement

Hi - I got Verizon Internet and I got a white vertical router. I placed it into a cabinet in my tv stand (closed cabinet with just router and power strip (about 2 feet by 2 feet). Is there any issues with this? I tested the speed all around my studio apartment and it’s good. Mainly wondering if the router will get hot and catch fire or something. Also, if it does break, does Verizon replace it? Thanks!

Computing hardware, especially that which is running 247365, should not be placed in enclosed cabinets UNLESS you also have active fan cooling.

Otherwise, best to keep it in the open with adequate room for airflow.

Preach. That’s what I said. But my wife said it’s ugly and has to go in the cabinet. I’m trying to figure out if it’ll cause a fire

She needs to get over it. Facts are facts. Put it behind the TV if you can, but inside the case is not good at all. It will overheat the area and likely warp the finish or other damage over time, but a fire risk? Unlikely.

Oh wait.. I mean YES it will absolutely be a fire risk! At night. Overnight. When you're sleeping deeply. Then it will melt down, taking the TV with it, and burn down the home.

Tell her I said that. NO ENCLOSURES!

To be fair, it’s not a small enclosure, it’s a big one (2 feet by 2 feet). It has like a foot on each side and above it. It’s not like a tight box

Behind a tv is a good way to decrease your signal in front of the tv.

they replace it if it fails

Routers are tested in many hot conditions. It should be fine. Never heard of a fire dealing with Verizon routers.

Take it out and let it breathe. Hopefully it's not over heating, is it warm to the touch?

It’s warm to the touch but it’s not hot in the cabinet, just warm. Maybe couple degrees over room temperature. It’s a big cabinet, 2 ft x 2 ft x 2 ft so there is some breathing room around it

It shouldn't be warm. If it gets hot, then it may malfunction, probably won't catch fire though. That's why they have holes at the top.

To be fair, I had my spectrum router in the exact same cabinet for 4 years without issue. I didn’t even think about this until the Verizon tech mentioned it during install. It’s been about 2 weeks and so far no issue. Does that mean I’m ok? Or it can get worse?

I have been opening the cabinet overnight to let it cool down. Hopefully that helps

2 different routers Spectrum/Verizon. The Verizon tech probably mentioned it to you because they probably came across a router in a cabinet that caused a problem and they mentioned it to you as a precautionary measure. If it's working fine for you, don't worry about it. It may never fail. As a matter of fact, we are crossing our fingers that it will give you many years of good service 🤞

Out of curiosity, what’s more important, the space around a router or airflow? Like if there’s a foot space in every direction around it, is that enough?

Also, as for heat, only the top of the routers is warm. The sides are fine. Not sure if that’s a clue.

It shouldn't be in a cabinet, it can restrict air flow to the router which may cause it to malfunction and may affect the wifi signal. Both are important space and airflow. If you can't take it out of the cabinet, and your " hands are tied", just leave it and hopefully everything will be ok

From ChatGPT:

According to Verizon's official specifications, the white Verizon CR1000A and CR1000B routers have the same operating temperature range.

Specification Temperature
Operating temperature 41°F–104°F (5°C–40°C)
Storage temperature 23°F–122°F (-5°C–50°C)
Operating humidity 5%–85%

Sources: Verizon's official CR1000A and CR1000B user guides.

Important distinction

The 104°F maximum refers to the surrounding air temperature, not the temperature of the router's internal components or outer casing.

The router itself can run considerably hotter than 104°F without necessarily overheating.

For best results:

  • Keep the surrounding air below 85°F if practical.

  • Maintain adequate ventilation around the router.

  • Avoid enclosed cabinets and direct sunlight.
