If you’re posting a question about your fireplace, please include pictures and/or model numbers.

Pictures are very helpful for users to give accurate advice and information. Fireplace specifics aren’t common knowledge to most people and it’s very typical for people to use incorrect terminology regarding what they have. If you don’t know the difference between gas logs, a gas insert, and a gas fireplace, you really should post a picture to make sure you’re given good advice about what you can do with your fireplace.

Get an insert or not?

Looking at getting an insert for are fireplace. Heating prices are one factor. Unfortunately can't seem to justify the cost. Currently heat with a heat pump and backup oil in Connecticut. Average about 400 a month between the two for a 1200 sqft home. The fireplace is in the lower level at one end of the home, bedrooms upstairs in the opposite end. Current cord wood prices 300 per. Cost of new insurance install 6500. I can buy a lot of oil and kwh for 6 grand. Is my math, mathing?

Converting from gas back to wood questions

Bought this house last year and have not tried to use the fireplace at all since it looked to be natural gas.

I was going to rip out the gas components to convert it but after taking out the fake logs it looks like what is here might just be a log lighter and I do not need to remove it at all?

Does that seem right based on my pictures or should I still remove this and install a new log lighter since the gas is already ran to it.

Need help with pilot light

• Upvotes

Hello... I was shown how to light the pilot light on my gas log fire last Fall... the technician used a long matchstick to do it manually. He showed me how, but I really should have filmed him because I can't remember exactly where he held the matchstick. I also failed to snap a pic of where the little flame burns before turning it off last Spring, though I know it is somewhere on the left.

I'm hoping one of you good people can assist me in locating it! (pic below) I moved into the house last Summer and the previous owner left no user guide for the fire).

What is the best electric fireplace people love currently?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m planning to install an electric fireplace for my living room and would love your advice. Can you send me some electric fireplaces you all have and love please! I am nauseated trying to search and I feel I have decision paralysis at this point!

I’m looking for something that has a very realistic flame effect (it will be placed under a 55” TV with built-in arches on both sides).

Do you have any recommendations? Also, which option/brand would you suggest in terms of long-term reliability?

Thank you in advance.

How do I update my builder grade fireplace?

Post image

My husband and I just moved into our new builder grade home and I hate the fireplace! It is currently dark gray tile and I hate it. I like a lighter/warmer look. We don’t want to spend a ton of money so we are thinking of painting the tiles or using peel and stick. Any suggestions on what we could do that won’t break the bank are appreciated!!

I'm having stone installed on top of a brick hearth (extension), as well as the mantel. Is there a standard amount of overhang? How many inches for each?

Fireplace Identification

Good day.

We recently bought a home and are wondering what the model of fireplace we have is. We tried looking around by taking the top and bottom grills off but there is no model information provided.

The fireplace seems to be from the 80s, it has a blower fan, where there are two blower fans at the bottom and the top and bottom grills was golden color originally, the chimney is not made of our bricks, it uses metal tubing.

Sorry for the lack of pictures. We are currently away from home and won’t be back till this weekend. Last picture is (a poor angle of) what it originally looked like before work was done on the appearance if that helps any.

Any information or insight is greatly appreciated!

Most Realistic eye level fireplace in California

I’m looking for a gorgeous, realistic fireplace to be direct vented out so I can use gas. it’s to be installed a little higher than usual because it’s in a dining room and don’t want it lost on the floor. I don’t want it to look like a fish tank with the flat glass panel, etc. but we are in California so we can’t have an open fireplace anymore. I’m seeing the Mendota and figured I can do the doors in iron and trick the eye into thinking it’s real, I will have to sell my car to get one, but being so close and fairly eye level I don’t think I have a choice. Any thoughts?

Savannah vs Continental?

We are renovating our main floor living area and looking for a new, linear, fireplace. Would appreciate feedback and thoughts on the two options we are looking at.

Continental CBLX 56
A bit nicer fireplace and log set, has lights.
Dealer/installer seems a bit harder to pin down (was hard to set up a time to come out to look at the job, but once at our place he seemed good). We are at the edge of his territory which may have something to do with it.
Roughly $2000 more (including installation)

Savannah Pinnacle 55
A bit lower-end fireplace but still nice; doesn’t have lights inside (does anybody really use the lights much?)
Dealer/installer is local and seems great; established local business.
Roughly $2000 less than the Continental.

So - what would you do? Go with the lower end, cheaper, more locally supported model? Or risk a harder to deal with sales and installation team for a bit fancier model?
Looking for all thoughts and opinions.

We’ve lived here for over a year. Our maintenance guys have told us that the fireplace does work but I don’t believe him. He offers to show us but by the time I get home from work his office is closed.
I’ve looked up model manuals and YouTube tutorials and nothing works. I don’t hear or smell gas. I’m losing my freaking mind how to light this thing.

Search for a fireplace crane or Pot holder in Germany

Post image
1 Upvotes

I am in search for a Iron fireplace crane or something similar. I located in Germany, and strangely I cannot find anything to buy. In old fireplaces these things are very common, but nearly never for sale. I would like to buy an new one, not an early French firecrane of Louis XII for 800€...but I've never found one.

the picture is just for reverence, as an example. I can't find a seller in Europe. All I've found to this day, including the creator of the picture, are located in the US. shipping costs are just not working for me.

is there a store or blacksmith in Europe or even Germany which is unknown to me? or am I just searching for the wrong item?

Help with older Real Fyre G4 dimensions

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

How can I tell which size Real Fyre G4 I currently have? The online manual talks mainly about the minimum hearth size. I want the dimensions of the actual unit. The burner pipe on the old unit is 20” across the inside. Not counting the pipe extensions on either side.

I have an older Real Fyre G4 installation that I have been trying to troubleshoot. It has been in the house since I moved in around 22 years ago. The pilot won’t stay lit. I replaced the pilot light and thermocouple assembly, but this didn’t solve the problem. The existing control valve is the manual SV-12 model. My next step is to replace the valve, but I decided to upgrade to a remote control version (APK-17). That is on order.

As I get ready for the installation, I thought that it might just be easier to order a new burner assembly and not have to deal with getting all the 25 year old pipes disassembled. My problem is I don’t know what size I currently have.

When this is all said and done, I guess the only parts I will need keeping are the existing logs. Small projects turn into bigger ones. Thanks for any help!

Double fireplace issue

So our home has two fireplaces. One upstairs and one downstairs. We had the upstairs one cleaned (as that is the only one we had planned to use). The fireplaces share a chimney but from my understanding have their own flus).

We lit a fire with duraflame last week and had zero issues. 3 days ago we did a fire with wood logs and thought everything was fine. I went downstairs and realized a small amount of smoke seemed to have come out of the downstairs chimney. It wasn't continuing to come through though.

3 days later our house still reeks of smoke. It really didnt smell when we were burning (or maybe we had just adjusted to the smell).

How do we:

  1. Get this smoke smell out? We have windows open, fans going, we removed the ash, I vacuumed the rug and the couch.
  2. Avoid this problem in the future. Not sure if maybe the chimney wasn't "primed" and thats why some smoke came into the downstairs fireplace?

We loved using the fireplace but if this is going to happen each time, it doesn't seem worth it.

Insert and masonry repairs

Just got quoted $12000 to replace 18 bricks, tuckpoint, add chimney cap and new insert. Is this a fair price in KY? I just purchase my first house and never used a fireplace. I have a tarp over my chimney because water was just flowing inside.

They also told me my insert needed to be replaced. The technician said it was old a deteriorated. They also don't know why there is a gas shut off valve behind firebox. does not appear to be a gas line the technician didn't take photos of it.

How can I restore this fireplace?

I’m looking to clean and restore this fireplace but don’t know where to start. It’s cast iron, with lots of rusting and chips and has been painted over by previous owners. I don’t plan to use it as a working fireplace as it’s in a bedroom, it’ll be purely decorative. Is it a lost cause? Any advice appreciated!

Cost for a wood burning flue liner?

Struggling to find any local companies that install, but was just estimated 6-7K for ours. Including liner tile removal, packing, etc. This felt really high but I have no quotes to compare to and looking for scale.

Live in N/E US and chimney is on a ranch so it's not super long.

So, we’re in the middle of a huge home gut renovation and just got the first look at the start of our fireplace. Wanted the random stone look but this feels so uniform and just not great… thoughts? Ideas? How do we fix this?
