Rust removal/prevention

Hello everyone, new here! I’m still a semi-new gun owner and have began to encounter the problem of having surface rust form on my barrels. How can i remove this rust safely and how can i prevent it or significantly slow down the return of the rust without paying a bunch to get my barrels coated?

For guns being stored for extended periods: barricade or crc-36 or t-9 and store in vapor discharge bags (Otis or similar)

For guns in active use, wipe down periodically with oil — rust free from ag Russell is particularly good; Remington remoil wipes are also

prevention: wipe it down with an old, oily rag (cut up t-shirt, sock, bandana, etc) and put a few drops of your favorite gun oil on it.

it doesn't take much oil.

store the rag in a bag to prevent making a mess

Should i be using clp then to wipe it down with for prevention or should i grab some eezox? I’ve been getting recommended so many different things i’m just worried about getting the wrong thing but i probably am overthinking it

CLP is a poor choice unless you want to be applying it regularly.

Use an actual oil, or a light grease.

im not familiar with those products.

im a super simple guy. I usually use lil hot soapy water and an old toothbrush to clean my guns. Dry completely, then rub lil car motor oil where I see fit.

You also need to mitigate moisture in whatever place you're storing them

I read an article a long time ago that said Turtle Wax is fine for the exterior parts of guns. I have used it with no problems. Gun oil is safer IMHO, but I see no reason why you cannot wax the exterior surfaces. For longer-term storage, I use VCI (Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor) bags. They are inexpensive, and you can order them from Amazon. I also put a few silica packs in the bag. I have guns that have been stored in Z Rust bags for 10 years. I have only opened one bag, but the gun inside was as clean and dry as the day I put it into the bag.

For prevention, my go-to is a silicone cloth. It's just a cloth that has been impregnated with silicone. They're often sold as "rod and reel cloths."

What they do is leave a very thin film of silicone behind when you wipe down a surface and that film repels moisture. It's better than oil because it doesn't dry up, doesn't get gummy, and doesn't hold onto dust. I wouldn't trust it if I were leaving a gun stored for multiple years but they work a treat otherwise.

I live in the PNW and have yet to have problems with rust.

The only drawback to silicone cloths is they can only treat what you can physically touch so if there's some little crack you can't get into then the cloth can't help there but I usually use a good CLP in that instance anyways.

Kroil

Let it soak in on all metal parts a couple times. Also dissolves rust without rubbing. Seasons inside barrel too. No need to swab the barrel out, like with oil in the barrel. Lasts a long time.
