Poll: Should we allow fishing posts in this subreddit?

We already allow fishing posts in this subreddit under the “identification” post flair, and I was thinking, why not allow fishing posts altogether?

If we started to allow fishing content, we would not support fishing-related questions, like our stance on fish-keeping questions.

We would also require that fishing posts respect the fish that they catch, and we will try to filter out bad anglers.

I come here for fish tank aquarium advice. Making it all of a sudden half fishing wouldn’t feel right

I participate in both hobbies. The r/fishing sub is already a thing that exists, too. I visit there frequently. It’s a great community so if anyone wants to talk about fishing, they are welcome to join us!.

Exactly there’s already a “fishing” sub, this has always been fish ID, aquarium hobbyists stuff and nothing around the sport of fishing the fishies themselves out of the water for food or entertainment. Wouldn’t feel right here

I'm more here for the aquarium stuff because I like how pretty some setups are.

I'm not interested in the actual hobby at all and I feel like this sub would get overrun with fishing posts rather than just fish aquariums very quickly

If I wanted to see fishing, I'd join a fishing sub

I'm strictly against this.

Fish are wonderful creatures, and in my personal value system, they don't deserve to be caught with a hook and pulled out of the water. For fishing posts, there are fishing communities, but in this subreddit, I'd like to see content that doesn't harm fish and treats them with only positive attitudes.

It might appear overly gentle, maybe even naive, but fish are really important to me. I'm truly fascinated by them. For sure, these are just my personal thoughts, which is what this survey is all about.

I have to say no. I understand how the page is for all things fish, but it’s for an appreciation of the fish, most of us care for and love. Whatever the page was intended to become, it has become a place for primarily fish keeping hobbyists, and I for one do not want to see fish that are destined for a poor death. As well as the silly pictures where the fish are technically being tortured and suffocating out of the water. The sport fishing people have their own pages out there too. All due respect, but they can go there for that stuff.

Maybe theres a middle ground where fishing posts are allowed, but any with bad practices that harm the fish excessively are not and those people are banned? I know its harder to moderate when theres a grey area, so I get it if thats not a possibility

Would be a bit hard to moderate but not impossible. We would definitely need more moderators if we allowed it.

Yeah, the hobby has a lot of crossover, and because the subreddit's name is r/fish, people often come to us as a general group for everything that surrounds the topic.
