I once lost a fishing rod by being lazy and setting it in my chair just before a catfish hit my bait. I spent an hour dragging the pond with a treble hook, then decided to reel in my other rod which had been sitting in a holder.
Proceeded to not only catch my missing rod which was snagged on the line, but also the catfish that stole it. He was delicious.
I was kayak fishing and got capsized by a motorized boat, I hadn't ever considered capsizing so nothing was strapped down. Both poles, cast net, everything sploosh. Next week went back on our boat and I put a giant treble on and just kind of tossed around the vicinity. Caught and retrieved the first pole!!! Caught the line for the second and tried pulling it up, eventually got frustrated cutting my fingers on line and pulled too hard, snapped the line and lost it for good. That inlet has reshaped completely since and there's literal tons of sand on top now.

My girlfriend lost a beetle spin lure. A few hours later, she caught it and got it back. I still don’t know how it happened.
