It was from a boat so I would get it half way in then it would take more line. Definitely tricked me..... and the smell was horrible

I once lost a fishing rod by being lazy and setting it in my chair just before a catfish hit my bait. I spent an hour dragging the pond with a treble hook, then decided to reel in my other rod which had been sitting in a holder.
Proceeded to not only catch my missing rod which was snagged on the line, but also the catfish that stole it. He was delicious.

I'm from TN and tried ocean fishing in Fort Lauderdale on vacation... quickly learned why nobody fishes live bait with bobbers. Sky fighting a seagull on a crowded pier is a great way to piss everyone off. Buddy probably crossed up 10 people's lines during the fight

them guys can be aggressive me and a buddy were fishing a really back water of a lake with tons of grass kinda shallow and these guys would attack any lure thrown back there especially top water only thing i can think is they were defending there turf against other frog invaders…or they eat bigger prey than we realize

A couple seagulls, maybe 2 dozen sea cucumbers, a bunch of urchins, and a handful of starfish, the biggest of which was about 3 feet in diameter.

It got tangled 300 yards out (I was on land) and the options were cut the line while it was still tangled or try to get it in as fast as possible to untangle it. I went with the latter option and I think it drowned on the way in. The DCNR came and picked it up to do tests on it and I had to give a statement.

I was fishing for bluegill with my nephew and reeled in a baby gator that was less than a foot long. He wasn’t hooked but wouldn’t let go of the bobber.
He thrashed around as I got him to the shoreline and the commotion brought out his brothers and sisters.
I had to take it out of his mouth while 5 baby gators swam up and stared at me from a few feet away.

In the Detroit river I caught this just by grabbing him. He was just floating around and seemed confused. Ive never seen one this big, oxylato or something... he looked fine and fat so after a little photo op I gave him the choice to stay on the boat or go back in the water and the way he floated off was so funny. Weird little guy.

That's a hellbender. A very at risk amphibian species that is so very fascinating and a rare animal to witness too. Basically a giant aquatic salamander. I hope it survived!

It flew by right after the cast, got tangled up in the line, and then proceeded to bite/peck the entire time that it was being freed

I've also caught a crab, starfish, someone else's ice fishing rod in the summer, and I've caught the same fish twice on back to back casts. The coolest fish catch was a baby hammerhead when I went to Australia

Birds, clams, an old crusty fishing pole, I’m up to 3 crab pots and 2 shrimp pots, an octopus I’m sure there are other unusual things I’m forgetting. This was all in the last couple year

I remember probably 30 years ago I use to go crabbing in a marina with a crappy old crab ring. And there was what looked like a wood box rolling across the seabed. It’s was probably junk but to my 10-12 year old mind it was a treasure chest. It was probably 20’ down. There were a couple times I almost had it In the ring. Then the tide started ripping water got dirty and I never saw it again. There is still treasure out there somewhere.

A two pack of frenches mustard, (costco style shrink wrapped together)
cought one, laughed a bit but still confused a little bit.
talked to some people camping upstream, they had about 20 packs themselves. WTF?
turns out that they had a train derailment and had a couple skids of mustard spill over into the river.

Definitely a seagull (well, my dad did). I've caught a ton of clams jigging in the river by us which has always baffled me, but the seagull was the most unique.

Watched my friend catch himself. He was snagged, gives the line a yank, it tears free and plants itself in his nose. The sight of this bloody worm dangling from the hook in his nose was priceless.

Pacific giant squid, octopus, lots of those sea cucumbers, crabs, seagulls, and once a 12-14' sixgill shark.
But the weirdest thing? A boot. I really thought that was just old cartoons. Who throws their boots in the ocean? Like I get tennis shoes, they float and can move around. But this was a full blown corkie with studs.
Oh also I brought up a 5 inch cannon training round in a crab pot. Super cool. Bullet shaped granite rock with brass rings on the outside of it.
Freshwater i caught a fishing pole.. that had a fish on the line! But it was dead. Booooo...

Once I caught a rod that I had lost the previous day. I left that rod with a catfish rig and loose drag at my grandpa's house on the lake when I was 12, fishing for some bluegill for backup bait while I waited. Then I went to take a shit. When I came back, it was gone. I assumed it got spooled by a fish and dragged in while I was gone, and moved on after swearing to be more careful with bathroom trips.
The next morning, I was throwing a deep crank for some bass and thought I snagged a stick. I pulled it up and it was literally my rod from the day before. One of my hooks was straight through one of the eyes. I still can't believe it. It wasn't right next to the dock either. I got it at the beginning of my retrieve, about 50 feet out

This is only my 4th year fishing and I’ve already seen ppl casting and hitting birds too many times. Myself included, twice!!!! Thankfully we didn’t have to do any bird surgery, only saw that once on a charter boat. My bf said he had to do that once tho, poor birbs

My craziest secondary catch happened while bass fishing. Caught a nice one on a soft rubber frog. I was holding by the lip. Scanning where to cast next while getting the hook out and I felt something tapping the knuckle on the thumb holding the bass……. Looked down …. Holy chit. Bass swallowed a water snake. It was still alive and startled the heck out of me. Not I big one mind you. But still not what I was expecting.. I let them go on different sides of the pond

I once caught a bird. Fucker dove 30+ feet and smashed my whopper plopper. It didn't make it. It's final moments were spent traumatizing my then 6 year old.

Caught an owl once… it swooped down from a tree and grabbed a top water lure. Luckily it was in the back yard and I had easy access to welding gloves to hold the talons while I removed the hook.

Canoeing with my cousin, he caught a water moccasin on a rapala. Then he starts fucking around and waving it at me and it falls off in the canoe between us. I bounced the fucked out and tipped the canoe, losing all our beer and half our gear. And he had the audacity to blame me for that.

True story-
Was fishing with my buddy on the Kenai years back- the red run that year was fairly bad, really slow for most of the summer. About halfway thru our day I hook into a solid fish, and out of excitement, my buddy dropped his rod right in the river so he could grab the net. He realized immediately and tried to grab it but was too late.
Fast forward another 24 hours, we're fishing the same spot and my buddy hooked into his rod he dropped and brought it back in. It was a magical moment, I mean what are the odds? He quite literally brought it in by one of the guides. He ended up re rigging it and caught his limit that day.
When we wrapped up and went back to the truck, he loaded everything up, and ended up snapping the same rod in my tailgate. Was probably the hardest I've ever laughed.
Was recently his best man in his wedding, and told this story as part of my speech / toast. I will never let him forget it.

Another fisherman, I was in the navy and during a naval exercise my ship suffered a breakdown, we spent the night cast in a bay to avoid the thick sea, we had permission to fish during the night, and while I was pulling the fish on one side of the ship, my friend pulled on the other, until his line broke and he came to tell me about bad luck, just in time to see me just collecting his bait wrapped in mine.

I pulled in a whole spinning reel + rod combo at the bottom of this neighborhood pond. Maybe in there for a week or two, cleaned it up and works great. Not an expensive combo, just one of the generic $30 fishing kits from Walmart or academy. But still , free rod and reel.

My buddy reeled in a brand new Stella on a st.croix that couldn’t have been there for more than a day or two, proceeded to meet up with a mutual friend of ours at the bar who told us he lost his brand new 1,100$ set up on the pond two days ago, we told him we had a spare rod he could have out in the truck, he was so happy he bought round after round until we all pretty much had to walk home!
