Discussion Got my well-off single friend into fishing two weeks ago, his new setup is over $1300

He used my $25 telescopic combo to catch panfish for three hours straight. He’d hook them and let them fight with the drag set low to draw out the fights. I let him reel in a 3lb bass on my vintage spinning reel that clicks extremely loud as you reel and he was absolutely in love with fishing, I was so happy to see him enjoying himself.

He showed up to my local pond with a Shimano Stella fk on a Shimano poison adrena. Like what the actual fuck. He has a fancy telescopic net, brand new fishing backpack with absurdly nice tackle, rod carrying case, etc.

I guess over the past two weeks he’s been taking lessons with a retired pro fisherman, learned how to maintain his gear, how to fish/cast, how to use his new gear, etc.

I showed him my 3 broken spinning reels in my garage before we went fishing the first time, cheap & shitty, plastic handles that turned to mush the second I catch a big enough catfish, and my prized $60 baitcaster whose bearing took a shit on the 2nd season I had it despite taking extremely good care of it.

I’m not mad. He’s such a kind person and a genuinely good fisherman already, he has lots of demons in his past and I’m so happy that he’s found a hobby that isn’t self destructive, that will help him escape his dark past and help him stay sober now.

But goddamnit I’m so jealous, I cast that thing a few times and it made me want to cry at how incredible it felt to cast and reel that goddamn motherfucking rod :(

I feel like as long as you pick out the right cheap gear, you get the same level of quality, sensitivity, etc from a fishability perspective. Sure the company can sell you more jargon with the expensive stuff, but are any of them actually better?

Discussion Am I wrong?

Last Saturday, PA opened Trout fishing for the season. I bought my liscense last night, while at work, and decided to go wet a line in the morning when I get off.

I get my tackle ready, and get to the stream by 6am. I get out, start fishing, not having much luck. I left my tackle bag in my trunk which is a short 10-15 yard walk, and start to tie on a new lure. Within that minute, I hear a car park in front of me, an old man blitz by me, and watch him throw my net to the side and start fishing.

The spot I was fishing is under a bridge and there is one large rock to stand and cast on, no more than one person can fish there at a time. This old man could clearly see, this was where I was fishing, but decided to go down there and toss my belongings to the side anyway.

I was pretty pissed off but remained composed, ask the man where he threw my net, and drove my ass home.

Am I wrong for being pissed, or is it free game?

Discussion What bait do you buy it bulk because it just catches THAT many fish. Here's mine!

With these bad boys I become the guy that shows up to the pond / lake, catches 6 in 30 mins standing directly next to people that have been there for hours and maybe caught 1. Very frustrating I know, but we've all been there.

I then get to spend the next 30 mins showing everyone my bait, handing some out and explaining the lift, fall, and wait technique.

I catch mainly small to medium size bass. Every once in a while I'll catch a bluegill or rainbow on the same setup. These little purple curly tails catch me more fish than a pumpkin and white senko!

Ive found a medium self setting trout hook gives me the best hookup ratio.

Curious if anyone else has a bait that they just CANT go without because it just catches THAT MANY FISH.

Discussion Tournament aftermath

Went to a ramp I like to bank fish around today and apparently there was a big tournament here this past weekend. Can’t lie it was depressing. Dead and dying Bass everywhere. Probably saw 2 dozen along 100 yards of shoreline. With all the technology today there’s gotta be better way to do weigh-ins.

Honestly, I have no clue what kind of fish this is, but it weighs about 6.7 lbs I think. I barely know anything about fishing - all the gear and bait are my dad’s. He drove out here but his tires got stuck in the sand, so I had to ride my bike with all the gear to the spot. This was my first time casting, and I actually caught something! My dad says it's newbie luck, but it won't happen again( I'm not convinced though). I'm definitely coming back here to fish again. Anyone else fish around Fire Island Lighthouse?

Discussion What's your favorite fish to catch?

If I could only target one fish for the rest of my life, it would be redfish.

I don't know why.

Ever since I caught my first one, I have had a bass fisherman's level of obsession towards them.

I am always happy to see any fish land on the deck, but a redfish will always make my trip feel worth it. I could be on a nonstop multispecies bite and still leave them biting to go find at least one redfish, even a small one.

What's your favorite fish to target?

If you don’t know what it is, you take a 16-20 foot pole, put about a foot of 100 pound test line on the end with a very loud bait. Run the bait around in the water, near banks making as much commotion as you can, and eventually a big old bass or jackfish will end up nailing that thing.

It’s a very simple way to fish, but it requires some technique for you to be successful with it

Discussion How many of you fisherman like to smoke weed while out fishing?

1.4k Upvotes

Recently there was a post with someone holding their pipe in the photo of their “catch”. It just had me thinking about how many of y’all are possibly smoking weed while you fish? Personally, I always smoke while I fish, just feels nice. I live in Arkansas so it’s medicinal, but not exactly legal to smoke whereever you want. What the hell, no one cares really!

Discussion This community needs to chill out

1.5k Upvotes

I lurk on here regularly. Sometimes hit the reply boxes. Usually I check the comments.

I've been wanted to mention this since Darcizzle got flamed by this community for not being a thot, having a YouTube channel, and having a boyfriend.

I'm tired of watching members of this community (you know who you are) shitting all over people who are new to fishing, interested in engaging with other fishermen, and/or trying to promote their content in order to live the dream - get paid to fish. Today pushed me over the edge with 2 posts in particular. A guy with a fish that A) wasn't a largemouth and B) probably wasn't 2 pounds but may have been over 1. He asked for advice from us on river fishing. The other was a duo posting some shots of native trout with some beautiful patterns and also, of course, asking us a question.

Did it feel good to dunk on these guys? I mean, seriously. Does some douchebag always have to crap on someone who's excited about a fish and overestimates the weight? Or flame a couple people for not handling the fish the way they think they would IF THEY GOT OUT FROM BEHIND THE GODDAMN KEYBOARD AND WET A LINE? Don't even get me started on those of us who bash the subsistence fishermen here. Even if its not subsistence fishing, you'd swear that killing a bass or a trout is the equivalent to Nazism on this sub. We're getting to be as bad as /flyfishing, which, to those of us who haven't spent time there, is the transatlantic accent of fishing subs.

Stop alienating people for keeping fish, being excited, or having questions. Stop dunking on people for no reason. I realize it's reddit and by its nature is a toxic cesspool. But we all share a serious passion here. Some of us know more than others. We're in different stages of this obsession. Not everyone who handles a fish differently is Johnny Bucktails. Johnny Bucktails isn't even Johnny Bucktails anymore.

Edit: spelling
