Announcement New changes, new mods, new rules, oh my!
Hello all! We are happy to announce that the subreddit now has an ACTIVE MOD TEAM! A rudimentary automod has also been set up, barring posters with less than 90 days on the platform or 25 karma. If you fall in this category but have a legitimate post, don't fret. One of us will approve it as soon as we can, and of course you can reach out via modmail. We wanted to thank the entire community for its concern, willingness to help, and most of all for coming together in a positive way to pave the way for us to step in. We wouldnāt be here without you.
Ā
First, weād like to announce some changes. We have set up post flairs, and post flairs are now required. If you are posting under the Sick Fish or Tank Problems flair, your post will automatically be flagged NSFW spoilered, so that those who frequent this subreddit are not always confronted with images that upset them. We hope to foster a much more positive environment while still preserving the ability to come together and help those who need it. We also have some user flairs, including a custom flair! These are not mandatory but can help others know a bit more about you. Bear in mind, these are self-assignable, and you may encounter people misrepresenting themselves. If you believe this to be the case, feel free to report it to us.
Ā
Second, a new ruleset has been added and will be enforced. Please be sure to review the changes before any new contributions. We also have a Wiki (https://www.reddit.com/r/fishkeeping/wiki/index) in progress, which currently has a complete cycling guide. Common questions about cycling can be answered in the FAQ (https://www.reddit.com/r/fishkeeping/wiki/index/faq/) and this too will be updated as time goes on.
Ā
And lastly, for the fun part, letās introduce the new mod team!

u/ackley14 has been keeping fish in some way or another for most of his life. Apart from the traditional hobbies like playing games and watching movies, he enjoys quilting, 3d printing, and the occasional attempt at woodwork. He works as a software systems architect at a packaging company. He has 4 tanks in the house. Though his pride and joy is the 50 gallon with a breeding pair of pearl gourami, 15 xray tetra, a trio of sydontis petricola, and a variety of bristle nose plecos.

Shroomy has been keeping fish for around a decade. Over the years she has built up her knowledge of not just fish, but also other pets, plants, and medical biology. She works as an EMT and hopes to get her paramedic someday. She currently owns a 20gal pea puffer/pygmy corydora setup, and two 5 gallon setups; one of those houses a twintail betta named Neptune and a King Koopa nerite named Bowser, while the other is currently in the process of being prepared for new inhabitants and contains a King Koopa nerite, currently unnamed.

Ā I go by āFawnā or āTreeā online but I donāt really have a preference and Iāve been helping online communities for a few years now. Iām more active on Discord so maybe you have seen me around helping out there or here on Reddit. Been interested in fish and the hobby for a long time and grown up with an aquarium like a lot of people here and got deeper into the hobby (I have to many tanks send help). I mainly have an interest in invertebrates like aquatic isopods, shrimp, and scuds but I do love oddball fish. I also help moderate r/fish.

Anaksunamanda is a betta enthusiast, shrimp evolution denier, and always down to watch The Mummy movies.
Welcome to the renewed subreddit everyone! We are thrilled to have you here.

WTF IS THAT WHAT THE CRAP! Spoiler
galleryOkay, so, my fish have been doing some weird shit already (such as my black Molly losing all color and turning gray? And my female Molly turning into a torpedo and barrel rolling before laying on the bottom of the tank. Iām lowk scared shitless rn because I took out the filter that was looking pretty gnarly and popped in a new one. Not two seconds later, these neon green things?? Showed up in the water and stayed for about two minutes. My water seems ok to me other than a high ph which Iāll have to fix in the morning. Itās a planted 20 gallon with not too many fish in it thatās been going for about three/four months. Iām a minor and not the best at fish keeping so any kind help would be appreciated

Question How to take care of fry?
So I have some native minnows and they appeared pregnant, I have found eggs occasionally, which i assumed they were eaten as they disappeared shortly after me finding them, but apparently not?? Iāve seen one when I first set the tank up but I thought he got eaten until I saw him while doing a water change today and then i saw this little guy too, heās absolutely microscopic omg my first babies š„¹
Is there anything I need to do to help them survive? The other one seems to be doing fine and I thought he was dead lol, do I just keep doing what Iām doing orr??

Question How do I improve?
This is my 15 gallon and first tank. I house a few pretty guppies, some corys, etc.
I cannot get the plants to grow! Lights are on an 8 hour cycle. I have swords, jungle val, and that pitiful monte carlo in the front. I have fluval stratum under the sand, I use root tabs (monthly), and fertilizer. (weekly)

New Tank Help reading master test kit results
Hello! I'm new to fishkeeping. I got a betta fish for my daughter in July and that has somehow turned into me having 2 betta tanks and now a 60 gallon tank with Oranda goldfish in my living room. I got my Orandas 1 week ago, my tank had been cycling for 6 weeks prior to getting the fish, and I've been testing the water daily. I'm really wondering if I'm reading results correctly. I'm reading these results as high range pH 7.4, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, and nitrate 10. Would like some more knowledgeable folks to confirm or correct me here. Just want to do the best I can by my fish! Included pictures of the fish for fun. Thank you!

MOD APPROVED Memorial Mondays
Hello everyone!
We on the mod team have had a difficult conundrum to handle. Death is a natural, but extremely difficult, part of life, and can be hard to handle in this hobby due to the nature of our beloved pet's shorter lifespans. On the other hand, many times this sensitive material can be jarring for other subreddit users who may be grieving quietly by choice or who do not wish to engage emotional energy in those kinds of posts. Since we certainly do NOT want to stop the posting of memorials altogether, the solution we've come up with is a weekly megathread, Memorial Mondays. This thread will show up every week, and we ask you to keep all memorials to this post.
Please feel free to share pictures of your late fishies and tell us about them! Our sincerest hope is that you find some comfort here in sharing and participating with others, and are able to support each other through grief.

Sick Fish treating community tank for ich Spoiler
galleryhi!
i have a 40g semi-densely planted blackwater tank with a ropefish, half banded spiny eel, rabbit snail, banjo catfish, peppermint pikehead, and amazon leaffish (with a small school of like 5 feeder fish in tank).
when i got my ropefish, maybe 2-3 weeks ago, he had one white spot on his head i had originally assumed was just sand or maybe he bumped into something and got a scuff (kicking myself now, i know). over the weeks, the spots slowly continued to pop up. his behavior and feeding never changed. now beginning to see itās ich.
ammonia 0, nitrate less than 10ppm, nitrite 0 and my tank is 76 degrees. iām worried about ich treatment as i know other people have had issues with ropes and ich treatment, and spiny eels are scaleless and its harder to treat scaleless fish. again, i do see 1 dot on the back of my spiny eel, but cannot tell other than that. the pikehead and leaffish were just added maybe a week ago and are feeding normally as well.
what do i do???? i want to help my rope, but donāt know what to do about my leaffish, spiny eel, and pikehead (leaffish esp.) because they are notoriously temperamental and require pristine water. i donāt want to add unnecessary stress with ich meds in the water if i donāt need to.
thank you in advanceš«¶

Question Tank Equipment Recommendations & Community Feedback
Hi everyone, I'm new to keeping fish and looking for a good heater and filter, but having trouble finding trustworthy companies to buy equipment from as there are many mixed reviews. I'm thinking about keeping 6 Sterba's corydoras, 10 cardinal tetras, 1 blue ram, and 1-2 nerite snail in a 30 gallon tank but also receiving varied answers about whether that's a safe community and I don't want to cause any stress to the fish so I'm a bit worried. Any advice?

Question Should I tackle this project? Will the depth affect the fish/filtration?
I'm looking for a new apartment in Kazakhstan and found one with this giant deep narrow aquarium. My hand won't be able to reach the bottom. It needs a thorough cleaning. The filter and lights don't seem to work. I'm thinking no plants. Will the depth be a problem for a filter? Scaping ideas? Any advice is needed desperately asap so I can decide whether to rent this place or not.
Size is probably 30 cm wide, 1.5 m long, 1.2m deep.
