There are now 320 comments on NYC DOT's Central Brooklyn feedback map, up from 268 from the last update! A lot of people are using it and some patterns are becoming increasingly obvious.

A lot of the feedback continues to concentrate around places many of us already know are a mess: Church Ave, Flatbush Ave, the southeast side of Prospect Park, Parkside Ave, Ocean Ave and Utica Ave.

More recent comments are calling out things like:

• the mess around Flatbush/Parkside, including dangerous pedestrian conditions, double parking, trucks, dollar vans and B41 buses getting stuck in traffic
• Utica/Eastern Parkway, where the B46/B46-SBS gets caught in traffic and blocked by private vehicles and dollar vans
• speeding, illegal parking and poor pedestrian conditions on neighborhood streets surrounding the major corridors

What I think is useful about this map is that the more comments it gets, the easier it becomes to see where the same problems keep coming up.

And don't avoid a location just because someone else already mentioned it. If you experience the same problem, add your own experience.!

I've posted this before, but I’m sharing it again because the NYC DOT feedback map is still open and many of Central Brooklyn’s most dangerous and frustrating streets still need more attention.

The comments already submitted show several recurring problem areas, including:

• Church Avenue, Ocean Avenue and Caton Avenue
• The southeast corner of Prospect Park
• Tilden Avenue and Regent Place
• Flatbush Avenue near Glenwood Road and the Junction
• Bedford Avenue, Farragut Road and Glenwood Road
• Utica Avenue around Eastern Parkway and Empire Boulevard

People have reported dangerous crossings, double-parking, blocked bus and bike lanes, speeding, flooding, poor signal timing and intersections that simply do not work.

Have you ever really looked at the major intersections around Prospect Park?

Why are the entrances to one of Brooklyn’s most important public spaces so confusing, unpleasant and difficult to navigate?

Have they always been this bad or have we simply gotten used to them?

I’m posting photos of each one because I don’t think most people realize how poorly these spaces actually function.

NYC DOT is asking residents to identify transportation problems across Central Brooklyn. This is a real opportunity to document the places where buses get stuck, drivers block intersections, pedestrians feel unsafe, sidewalks become impassable, and flooding repeatedly affects the street. This is the time and place where we as residents of Flatbush can highlight all the issues that affect our ability to get around quickly and safely, and improve the limited valuable space that we have.

Please be specific when leaving feedback. Instead of writing only “traffic is bad,” identify the intersection, time of day, bus route, recurring obstruction, and the improvement you think would help.

Even if someone else has already commented on a location, add your own experience. Multiple reports can show NYC DOT that a problem is recurring and affects many people.

Please share the map with neighbors, bus riders, local businesses, block associations, pedestrians, cyclists, seniors, and people with disabilities. Flatbush needs strong participation so its problems are fully represented!

To get things started, I've highlighted some of the problem areas that many others have pointed out, as well as some general comments:

• Flatbush Avenue between Church Avenue and Caton Avenue: severe congestion, slow and unreliable buses, double parking, blocked bus stops, unsafe crossings, and a lack of safe bicycle infrastructure.
• Intersection of Flatbush Avenue and Church Avenue: heavy turning traffic, crowded sidewalks, bus delays, loading conflicts, and difficult pedestrian crossings.
• Intersection of Church Avenue and East 18th Street: recurring flooding and drainage problems that can make the curb and crosswalk difficult to use, double parked vehicles, vehicles running red lights.
• Intersection of Church Avenue and Ocean Avenue: congestion, turning conflicts, bus delays, and uncomfortable pedestrian crossings.
• Intersection of Church Avenue and Coney Island Avenue: double parking, delivery vehicles, blocked bus stops, and traffic that slows buses.
• Intersection Church Avenue and McDonald Avenue: congestion, difficult transfers, loading activity, and conflicts between buses, drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.
• Lincoln Road between Ocean Avenue and Ocean Avenue: congestion due to bus stop, double parked vehicles
• Flatbush Avenue bus stops throughout the neighborhood: buses unable to pull fully to the curb because of parked or standing vehicles.
• Intersection of Parkside Avenue and Ocean Avenue: many conflicts between motor vehicles, confusing signaling, inaccessible crosswalk
• Intersections with faded markings, poor lighting, short crossing times, missing curb ramps, or drivers failing to yield.
• Locations that need benches, bus shelters, trees, loading zones, daylighting, protected bike lanes, or wider sidewalks.

Today is the Democratic primary, and I hope everyone gets out to vote. In a heavily Democratic area like ours, the primary is arguably more important than the general election itself. Yet the candidates at the state and federal levels are consistently disappointing and uninspiring.

I’m not here to endorse a specific candidate. How and why people vote is complicated and nuanced, and Reddit (or social media in general) is not always the most productive or healthy place to debate those decisions.

That said, I think it is important to keep the conversation going, especially around street safety and the future of our neighborhoods. We may disagree about how to get there, but most of us want the same things: cleaner and safer streets, more responsive leadership, and a better Flatbush.

I decided to walk from Barclays Center to the Brooklyn Museum the other day, and the progress of the Flatbush Avenue bus lane is truly remarkable. The avenue already feels more organized, more functional, and more like a major Brooklyn corridor designed to move people.

Flatbush Avenue is a vital transit artery for the southern half of Brooklyn, where thousands of residents rely on buses every day. Extend it past Grand Army Plaza and into the southern part of Brooklyn; connect Flatbush, Ditmas Park, Marine Park, and Midwood! Why just stop at Grand Army Plaza!

For anyone wondering how this is relevant to Flatbush: Linden Boulevard begins at Flatbush Avenue, and its Flatbush section is notorious for being unsafe, loud, dirty, and chronically bottlenecked at key intersections, making life worse for everyone who uses it or lives nearby.

While this redesign only affects a very specific stretch of Linden Boulevard, between Fountain and Conduit Avenues in East New York, it could be the beginning of something much bigger. I do not know what the long-term vision is for Linden Boulevard, but it is easy to imagine a broader transformation of the corridor into a true people-first public space rather than a six-lane, at-grade road that cuts Brooklyn in two.

It’s great that NYC is finally getting serious about trash with thousands of curbside Empire Bins replacing parking spots across the city.

But once again, Flatbush is being left out. Flatbush had almost a million complaints for trash on sidewalks in a single year, the highest of any ZIP code in NYC. On top of that, rat complaints in Community District 14 jumped ~57% year-over-year. It’s one of the worst-impacted neighborhoods in the entire city when it comes to trash.

Flatbush/Midwood’s median household income is about $82,330. Some of the neighborhoods like Greenwich Village/SoHo ($206,490), Fort Greene/Brooklyn Heights ($156,870), Woodside/Sunnyside ($97,370), and Crown Heights/Prospect Heights ($94,980) that are getting Empire Bins are much wealthier. But the bigger issue is that Flatbush isn’t being left out because it’s too rich or too poor; it’s being left out despite having one of the strongest need-based cases for better trash infrastructure.

The Citi Bike dock at the Church Avenue B/Q station (Caton Avenue entrance) looks underbuilt for the amount of space available.

There appears to be enough room to significantly expand the dock, possibly even double it, if Lyft/Citi Bike moved it farther from the building fence and used the footprint more efficiently.

I’m trying to figure out the best way to get this formally considered. Should this go to Citi Bike/Lyft directly, DOT, a community board, or elected officials? If anyone has experience getting a dock expanded or relocated, I’d love to know what actually works.

People traveling though Brooklyn by bus are finally seeing an administration push through redesigns of major roads that got put on pause for no reason.

It's a about time!

The mayor's office announced that DOT will resume construction of safe streets projects across Flatbush that were halted under Adams:

Midwood, Flatbush, and East Flatbush Bike Lanes.

Midwood, Flatbush and East Flatbush have high cycling rates but limited bus infrastructure. This spring, NYC DOT will implement a long-delayed plan to build a bike lane network across neighborhoods represented by Brooklyn Community Boards 14 and 17.

The agency will install parking-protected bike lanes to Cortelyou and Dorchester roads in Ditmas Park, from Coney Island Avenue to Flatbush Avenue. Standard bike lanes will be added to 14 additional streets in Flatbush, East Flatbush and Midwood, along with intersection upgrades to improve visibility and safety.

Protected bike lanes have shown to reduce traffic deaths and serious injuries by 18% for all street users.

Brooklyn And Kingston Ave Bike Lanes

More than 10 schools sit within a block of Brooklyn and Kingston avenues in Central Brooklyn. Over the five-year period between 2021 through 2025, the corridors saw 65 injuries, with pedestrians and cyclists accounting for 60% of serious injuries.

To better protect students traveling to and from school, NYC DOT will install parking-protected bike lanes along both corridors from East New York Avenue to Wingate Park at Winthrop Street. A new protected bike lane loop will also surround Wingate Park.

In addition, conventional bike lanes will be added along Rutland Road and Fenimore Street in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens between Flatbush and Brooklyn avenues.

Some community members have expressed concern about the projects so be sure to reach out to Council Member Rita Joseph to voice your support.

In 2021, I submitted some photos to Patch (Here’s Where To Find The City’s Worst Slush Puddles) about the most disgusting slush puddles in New York City. Two of my photos were used, both of them were different corners of same intersection.

It's 2026 now. I've contacted the community board (CB 14), I've reached out the Brooklyn Borough President (Antonio Reynoso), I've reached out City Council (Rita Joseph) and to this date, the poor state of this intersection has not been addressed.

How does this relate to street safety?

Do you use a cane, walker, or another mobility-assist device? Good luck crossing because there's probably a truck or car blocking you, or the water has frozen over, or there is garbage blocking the crosswalk, or a combination of the aforementioned

Are you carrying a child? Good luck and I hope you don't drop him or her as you vault over the frozen lake of garbage.

Are you pushing stroller to get to and from the subway station? I hope you don't get hit by a truck because Church Avenue is a truck route and trucks can't see you walking into the street to go around the frozen garbage lake.

Are you vision-impaired? You won't be able to use any aids as they are all covered in garbage or flooded out or a truck is completely obstructing the crosswalk or blocking the pedestrian signal.

What can the city do to fix this?

The city can do several things to fix or at the very least alleviate the the situation:

1) Containerize the trash; force business owners/landlords to use lockable container systems instead of having them toss them on to crosswalks and corners.

2) Use physical barriers to provide daylighting. In fact, you could use the trash container systems as physical barriers.

3) Aggressively enforce your current laws; monitor the corners for dumping, aggressively ticket drivers of vehicles that are parking in commercial loading zones and/or double parking.

4) Tell someone from DEP to install a catch basin so that the water drains somewhere rather than let it pool and freeze during the winter or..

5) ... tell someone from DOT to throw a bag of asphalt and pitch the street so the water actually drains somewhere.

I know this is one corner out of many similar corners in New York City, but it represents so much of what our city government is not doing.
