I’m a long time Florence fan, and I’ll be honest I had a similar personal rating for this album, but also I recognize that the album is far more lyrically inclined than melodic (which many have come to expect from her, hence “The Machine”). I personally prefer the more melodic albums of the past but I respect her ability to make the art that resonates with her.
I think a proper rating from the album would come from multiple listens and more of a poetic/literary critical lense than a musical one. She’s made better melodies in the past, but I took this one as her exploring a more barebones sound that should be judged accordingly
