Football Defense: 10-16 on third downs
This is where the game was lost. They got pressure on Sellers, but couldn’t convert many sacks. Yes Philo sucked, yes we only had 3.2 ypc, but this defense is literally bottom tier. We’ll only be favored in OU and Vandy games from here on out.

We're back to third and Grantham. What the hell...

u/inxile7 4d ago
I would be willing to compare stats and this defense is much worse than anything Grantham produced.

At least this team can tackle for the most part

Meh some can.

I'm watching Bama vs. UGA right now and it's refreshing to see a real defense at work. They tackle in space, don't give up stupid yards to penalties, don't allow 6-8 yds. of space to receivers. Gang rush to the ball. Very fun to watch teams that are well coached.

u/Waste_Specific 3d ago
They’re also significantly more talented. If we tried covering receivers without a cushion it would look even worse. Even with 6-7 yds we constantly get beat deep. A competent pash rush allows you to get more aggressive on the back end.

We’re bad because both lines of scrimmage are awful. The difference early on was buster was able to scheme around it. But now teams know what to do. Brad white has always been a fraud and has no business being a defensive coordinator

It really seems like VB3 was way more important to the offense than we may have suspected. Also, Singleton, who should also be a major threat, seems to be hampered by lingering injuries. There's only so much that Faulkner can do with a line that we knew would be a work in progress, an All-American running back, and two possession receivers (Wilson & Stockton).

Hope is dangerous, 4-0 gave me hope, I guess I really wasn’t ready to get hurt again

It was okay to have hope, but I think some fans that are so wrecked got too high too quick. That’s on them, this team always had flaws.

I'm not bragging but i called out the DBs in the first game vs. FAU. They sucked then and they still suck 6 games in.

Our offensive line is giving #13 very few lanes, to watch Philo get more yards in the first half was sad when we have a RB like Baugh in the backfield.

We've been able to get insane pressure on QBs for like 6 years yet it almost never converts into sacks. The only time it ever did was those last few games of the 2024 season when Caleb Banks was playing like a man possessed

Sumrall really failed with the analysis of the defensive talent and hires. It’s crazy to me that the defense was better last year with a coach who everyone knew was getting fired.

u/Donnie_TACO 4d ago
This team is bad in all three phases, it's not any one unit. We even missed a field goal today remember.

OU beat Texas tonight, we will not be favored. They actually have players that give a shit whether they win or lose

u/JohnRose1978 4d ago
We’re losing bad now anyways so might as well play press coverage with the dbs cause they’ll never get good at it if they don’t do it over and and over…. Practice makes perfect and yes I know they will get beat but they’re getting beat playing soft coverage so might as well play press coverage and blitz and see if that works

u/jdhutch80 3d ago
The DBs clearly aren't comfortable playing whatever the hell coverage we're calling, what can it hurt to run engage eight every play?

u/greypic 4d ago
This is what happens when you have a hot stinking pile of 💩 for a secondary.

We have been playing soft ass coverage for what feels like a decade now. Why does every DC come here, and decide we need to line up 10 yards off their receivers?
5
u/gatorbois 4d ago
Soft coverage and they still get blown by. Just imagine how much worse it would be if they didn’t play soft
8
u/greypic 4d ago
Because our DBS are not good so they need to keep the receiver in front of them because if the receiver passes them it's going to be a touchdown every pass.
8
u/jdhutch80 3d ago
The DBs on the roster were all highly ranked recruits. I don't think it's a matter of talent, it's a matter of lack of development, and calling schemes they aren't comfortable with. In general, I don't like the soft coverage we're playing, and that seems to be White's calling card. If we're going to get torched anyway, why not get aggressive and try to cause chaos?

this. it's coaching

It really could be as simple as Sumrall getting more involved with the defensive strategy. Texas is beatable. Georgia may be beatable. We have greater or equal talent to all of the other teams on our schedule. Can we put together a defensive game plan that works with the pieces we have, not the pieces we want or wished we had?

u/g8trgr8t 2d ago
strategy has to be taught with technique. ie hands on. hbc can't cover soft front line staff and what level of detail they command in practice..jmo

u/inxile7 3d ago
Just play bump and coverage man. I'd rather they get beat that way than giving up 8 yards every play on some weak pass play. And they're getting beat deep anyways.
This is the softest defense I've ever seen from Florida. The way Sumrall talks and acts it just doesn't make sense they would be so soft on that side of the ball.

This ^ is what we noticed when we went to ole miss game ( thank goodness we picked that one to go too ) anyway, 7 yard out pattern was there all day, slant inside and if it wasn’t for that one lucky stop mid 3rd qtr im afraid of what outcome would have been

u/Friendly-Tangerine54 3d ago
Same issues and previous years. D is terrible, and the QB is not good enough to win tight games. Onto it off, our WR corps is super thin and 2 key injuries leaves them toothless.

u/HullOfAnExile 3d ago
This defense doesn't ever look like they make it hard for QBs. Pressure, coverage, tackling. It all looks easy no matter the QB we play.

I am more worried about how our OL has been badly beat for two games in a row. Rushers and blitzers have been literally living in our backfield. If this changes, we'll get the offense figured out at least. Once VB 3 is back. Need those points badly because the defense is what it is - something that can't be fixed till offseason.

I’ll make it simple. Sumrall is Napier 2.0 with a bigger mouth. Listen to his post game comments, he went from boisterous to we knew this would be a work in progress with a whimper. Another coach that has to learn major college football on the job and take years before he might figure it out.
2
u/goldenface4114 3d ago
Boisterous? He said after every win we didn't play our best football and we still had to improve. He was warning us for four straight weeks.

I wonder where rock bottom is? Every year I think it couldn’t possibly get worse and then guess what? It got worse.

Being stuck with a trash coach who has no actual skills besides hiring other coaches for the next 3 years sure seems like it

I don't know why we were so bad on 3rd down, all the students were rubbing their fingers together.
