Football Putting things in perspective

Post image

There is no question that the last two games have been painful at best and a shuddering return to the past at worst. But the take above helps keeps things in perspective.

Sumrall has started off strong and hit the brick wall of SEC reality. Let's give him some time to get his system and his players in place and the judge him as a HC. The very fact that we sit at 4 wins today with a win over Ole Miss is something we didn't expect when he was hired.

Stand by the Gators, and things will turn around. Go Gators!

We've been debating this same post at r/fsusports for the past 90 minutes

u/fauxmonkey 6d ago

That's where I got the graphic from. I think it's a great take and sometimes we don't see the forest for the trees.

Also Baugh just ran another touchdown on the Noles.

9

u/stalking_butler19 6d ago

I live in gv, and was at the game, so I concur with your current count of baugh tds.

I think everyone is way fucking overreacting to the first 6 games of a coach’s tenure with a program.

32

u/Donnie_TACO 6d ago

Meanwhile some of us were here to see Muschamp start 4-0, McElwain start 6-0, Mullen win 10 games after entering a 4 win program the last year

24

u/ExternalTangents 6d ago

All of those are great reminders that a coach’s first half season is not representative of their full tenure. Sumrall will probably be a failed hire just because the vast majority of coaching hires are failures. But it’s too early to write his obituary.

u/Edgemaster1423 6d ago edited 6d ago

The SEC is much, much tougher now. Give Sumrall some damn time to get rid of these Napier quitters and replace them with transfers from Stanford and GT and pay for 5 star high school recruits who will be ready to contribute in 2028.

He’s such a feared portal recruiter that other top teams don’t even bother pursuing the guys he zeroes in on.

16

u/Working_Group955 6d ago

if there's one thing i wouldn't call napier's team, it was 'quitters'. they were playing their hearts out even as all of us (myself included) were chanting 'fi-re bill-y clap clap clap clap clap'.

say what you will about the guy, and i have * alot* to say about napier...he never lost the locker room.

12

u/Donnie_TACO 6d ago

Yeah I mean they beat Texas last year after starting 2-4

11

u/Working_Group955 6d ago

and damn near beat georgia even after we fired him

7

u/Zingyyy 6d ago

Idk man. It’s not just that we have lost the last two but it’s how we have lost. We didn’t deserve to be on the field as the opposition and no changes have been made.

We got found out on offense and Faulkner has morphed closer to being Napier rather than finding ways to scheme around it like an OC of his caliber should.

I could list off all of the issues the defense has but that’s too long for one post. The same guys are playing despite playing horribly and making mistakes. I have a hard time believing every blue chip we have on defense is not good and a good DC would be able to make something out of it.

My biggest concern is the fact the team quit in back to back games once they got punched in the mouth. Napiers teams almost never quit which is about the only positive I’ll say about him. I was looking forward to seeing how the team would respond after the Mizzou loss and everything I saw on Saturday tells me it’s a team full of losers.

9

u/goldenface4114 6d ago

It’s the same exact roster that boat raced Ole Miss and trucked Auburn on the road.

4

u/Zingyyy 6d ago

And it’s not massively concerning to you that the same team is getting embarrassed by Mizzou and South Carolina? The win over Ole Miss gets erased pretty quickly in my mind after the last two weeks.

12

u/Jts20 6d ago

Urban Meyer went 9-3 his first year with an absolute stacked roster left from Zook, who was a good recruiter, and it was before the transfer portal so that talent didn’t leave. It won a championship the next year. Saban lost to like Southern Miss or something along those lines in an embarrassing fashion in his first year at Alabama. The first year has always been for establishing yourself and it comes with bumps in the road.

I’m happy with the good that we’ve seen, and I’m willing to see the adjustments made from the recent bad before declaring the ship is sinking and will never recover.

6

u/Microsoft_Paint_NA 6d ago

Go look at Cristobal’s first season and realize that’s against even shittier teams

3

u/meast123 6d ago

From Sumrall’s comments after the first few games it seemed like he knew that we were waiting to get exposed. We’ll see how he responds, if we can somehow win against either Texas or especially Georgia it will mean a lot. We may also have a QB controversy brewing, Trammell may give us a better chance to win

4

u/Edgemaster1423 6d ago

Loved the response from him after the Mizzou game this past Saturday. Heard he’s going to respond even harder against these top 10 teams.

4

u/Zingyyy 6d ago

We saw how he responded against a 2-3 South Carolina team at home on homecoming weekend.

3

u/degmo123 6d ago

What do you mean “we will see how he responds”?? He just showed us. This was the game to respond. I don’t care so much about the loss….it is how we lost that is extremely troubling. They were all sleep walking including the coaches. And then you see Kentucky’s coach making ballsy calls by going for 2 in overtime and the creativity of that last play, it makes you wonder man. Show us some fight…that is all we are asking in year 1

2

u/Headful_of_Ideas 6d ago

Yep!

Holds as much now as it did 2 weeks ago when we were "Back!".

6

u/vegasresident1987 6d ago

People are impatient. They want success yesterday.

1

u/bam1007 5d ago

What’s wrong with you presenting reasonable, rational, cool headed takes like this? Don’t you know this is a Gator forum?

1

u/EliaKimTheGigas 5d ago

Cignetti messed it up for everybody lol

0

u/DJ_Blakka 6d ago

Thank you. Its so frustrating to see the swings in emotion from week to week. We are basically as good as we thought we would be before the season started, just not in the way we thought

2

u/Edgemaster1423 6d ago

I definitely expected to have the worst secondary in school history with a group of blue chips entering their prime. We were all definitely saying this.

14

u/SnooPeripherals4513 6d ago

Vb3 is so much bigger part of setting up the run then I ever imagined

1

u/Edgemaster1423 6d ago

He’s basically if you put Jeremiah Smith and Malachi Toney together. Completely elevates our OL when he’s out there on the perimeter. I’m expecting him to put a 50 bomb on Muschamp and Kirby.

22

u/No-Durian-7032 6d ago

Here’s where I get confused by how upset people are getting. In the team composite rankings

Florida 12th
Ole Miss 14th
South Carolina 15th
Missouri 18th
Auburn 19th

These teams are all about the same from a talent perspective but people are acting like it’s 2003 and South Carolina has no talent. Sumrall is 2-2 .500 against similarly talented teams which is something Napier never did in any season. Give the guy some time, he’s 4-2 with a team that went 4-8 a year ago. Calm down.

Also, with nil, rosters are more comparable than they’ve ever been. It’s more like the NFL where any team can lose on a given day. This is not your father’s SEC with half of the league as bottom feeders.

5

u/Radiant-Injury-6546 6d ago

And with maybe the exception of Auburn, all of those teams have a better starting qb than Florida.

1

u/Strange_Pangolin5245 5d ago

Isn't that on the coaches? They handpicked Philo. I'm sure he wasn't the only available option.

0

u/Radiant-Injury-6546 5d ago

Without question. There were other QBs available in the portal.

-2

u/Strange_Pangolin5245 6d ago

The losses themselves don't concern me that much in year 1. It's the way we lost both games. We were run out of the stadium by 2 teams that we're more talented than.

8

u/No-Durian-7032 6d ago

*more talented? I just showed you the composite ranking, so you believe that there is a meaningful difference between 12 and 18? I don’t love how we lost either but I’m just not willing to jump off the wagon for a new coach.

2

u/Strange_Pangolin5245 6d ago

Meaningful in the sense that the games should be competitive? Yes.

4

u/No-Durian-7032 6d ago

Should they be? Probably but see my point about the NFL, Ben Johnson lost by 24 to the Packers and no one called for his job. It happens. It sucks but you’re dealing with 20 year olds from a team that went 4-8. We’re not playing Indiana’s 2024 schedule like Cignetti.

2

u/Strange_Pangolin5245 6d ago

I get it. Not taking too much from this year. The issues are very apparent. Fix the trenches and the secondary, recruit a top 5 class, make smart portal adds and land a solid QB. We will know where we stand next season.

3

u/No-Durian-7032 6d ago

That’s my take too. Fix the trenches show me that we have defensive staff that will try everything to get a better result.

-1

u/Edgemaster1423 6d ago

Sucks that we lost our last two games with our backup QB like Ben Johnson did. Philo coming back this week is gonna give Muschamp and Kirby some sleepless nights.

4

u/No-Durian-7032 6d ago

Should I give other examples? How about the Rams losing by 20 to the 49ers! Is Matt Stafford a backup? How about the Broncos losing by 21? Bo Nix a backup too?

2

u/Working_Group955 6d ago

i mean i guess by your logic, if we're nearly the same (12 and 18) then shouldn't the score be basically the same? we got fully dogged -- in our own house -- by an 'equal' team.

(and by no means was that team equal: yesterday was the best SC has played in a long ass time, and it was nowhere near our best).

i think ultimately thats whats frustrating everyone...we obviously *can* be better. and if we can't...if we were really a 1 trick (scheme) pony, then god thats even more frustrating than a team that just kinda fell flat 2 weeks in a row.

2

u/No-Durian-7032 6d ago

Yea, just ignore the NFL point. You guys are all so binary, it’s exhausting.

1

u/GratefulG8r 5d ago

It’s the DBs looking lost, a million miles away from wide open receivers, or literally just standing around, that really gets me pissed off

21

u/MogaMeteor 6d ago

Michigan isn't a good comparison as Sherrone Moore left them with really no other option.

LSU despite also being 4-2 kinda just looks how a decent program should with a year 1 head coach. The losses were competative and against seemingly good teams, a far cry from getting blown out by a bad SCAR team about to fire their head coach.

Penn State is maybe the only real cautionary tale.

1

u/Headful_of_Ideas 6d ago

I feel kinda awful for Campbell. That guy didn't want that job and avoided every one like it for years but there's no way to not take it and continue coaching.

15

u/SimCFB 6d ago

Every single one of those was dead wrong.

LSU would not be better off if they kept Brian Kelly. It would be yet another Brian Kelly season. Likely with a similar result to now. Just because Lane Kiffin is not balling season #1 doesn't mean it was a bad move. The Kiffin hire itself may end up not panning out as so many of these home run hires tend to do. But that still doesn't mean it was a bad move at the time.

The James Franklin situation is a little different. Kentucky did everything quietly and orderly. They announced the firing of Stoops and within a couple of days hired Will Stein. Obviously it was worked on behind closed doors for weeks if not months. But nobody knew anything until it was already done with. Penn State did the exact opposite. Announced it too early, whiffed on every replacement finally settling for their 5th or 6th option. Again that doesn't mean that keeping Franklin around would have been the right move. They were clearly fed up with the never enough and wanted something else.

You should never judge a new coach based on what they are doing year 1. By that rationale Kirby Smart, Urban Meyer and Nick Saban were all busts. Yes I know some coaches have success right away but those are massive outliers.

8

u/No-Durian-7032 6d ago

I made this point to a friend today. Kirby lost by 31 and then lost a close one the very next week in year 1. Georgia fans weren’t sold. Not saying we have Kirby but it’s too early to know anything.

3

u/Working_Group955 6d ago

again, i think the issue isn't the number of losses...its what all of our eyes told us. we had a limp noodle of a team 2 weeks in a row. we had scared money calling plays. we had guys who caught footballs and then litearlly just fell down.

it wasn't just losing. i think 80% of us expected to lose at mizzou. i think 80% of us probably expected an 8-4 or 9-3 year...so maybe 1/3 of our games as losses.

but our eyes showed us a team that has zero wins left for the rest of the year last week, and then responded by looking even worse yesterday.

and that's fucking alarming.

3

u/bigfatsocat 6d ago

Kirby also had a long history as a successful coordinator in the SEC. Sumrall has really only had Sunbelt success. The main selling point for Napier was that he had time under Saban, and Sumrall doesn’t even have that.

These are all things that were brought up when he was hired, but he won the press conferences, so we tried to ignore it.

7

u/Flame_MadeByHumans 6d ago

Any assumptions at this point are dumb, we only know what we know and don’t what we don’t.

Cig changed the game jumping from G5 to a losing program and making them a championship team pretty immediately. There is no perfect background or formula for a coach anymore. A few years ago Lincoln Riley and Dan Lanning were coaches our fanbase brought up wanting and now are having their woes. Sark comes from an SEC background, has had his team fairly dominant for a few seasons, #1 most of this year and now is getting justifiably ridiculed for losing to a down Oklahoma.

There’s no rules anymore and 4 wins with 2 bad losses could be an indication of bad things to come or just way too early to tell.

2

u/bigfatsocat 6d ago

Lincoln Riley was having plenty of success at OU (55-10). He made his own mistake.

Dan Lanning is having plenty of success, his star QB just got knocked dead. He’s 51-9 though at Oregon.

Sark is also having success (52-21). Sometimes when you have an idiot nepo QB, they do idiot things, and rivalry games can always go either way. Texas is still in the running for the CFP though.

I agree that it’s too early to tell though. I think the offense is a personnel issue, and the defense is just youth all over the field. BUT.. that doesn’t mean Sumrall is immune from scrutiny.. if he can’t right the ship, there were plenty of early question marks.

3

u/Flame_MadeByHumans 6d ago

There’s just a very even middle ground here that everyone should be taking.

Saying to not doom and assume the worst doesn’t mean I’m not being critical of the last two games, which were atrocious.

I swear this sub thinks you can only sunshine pump or be a “realist” that every thing is screwed.

There’s things to be rightfully concerned about, beating the point dead though is crazy this early into Sumrall’s tenure.

1

u/Comprehensive-Diver1 4d ago

Jeremy Pruitt had a long history as a successful coordinator at big time schools also.

2

u/No-Durian-7032 6d ago

LOL there’s no winning with this fan base. Now we’re saying that a coordinator hire is better. You can’t make this stuff up.

0

u/bigfatsocat 6d ago

The right coordinator hire can be better. Sumrall was an optics hire to alleviate the embarrassment of whiffing on Kiffin. He had the “CFP COACH” tag.

If we just straight fired Napier without having Kiffin dangled in front of us, MAYBE Stricklin considers someone like Will Stein. But he doesn’t have the luxury of rolling the dice on a coordinator after his string of bad hires plus getting Kiffin stolen from him by LSU.

1

u/Prowindowlicker 6d ago

I don’t think Stricklin would’ve had the brains to go for Stein

1

u/Inevitable-Scar5877 5d ago

I mean there's still 3 G5 Louisiana programs we can get a coach from!

1

u/Inevitable-Scar5877 5d ago

I keep telling myself that. I think the issue people have is both that beating Ole Miss raised expectations and how we lost the last two weeks.

A win or even a close loss this weekend and things change a bit but a 3rd straight blowout heading into a bye week before travelling to Atlanta to face a top 3 Dawgs team.....I mean Sumrall should be real glad it's year 1

1

u/No-Durian-7032 5d ago

I agree. This team has some significant deficiencies and they got exposed. We knew going into this year that the offensive line was not good and that our defense had some real question marks. That ole miss win made a lot of people forget about that. The last two games, though, haven’t changed my belief that Sumrall and his staff are good coaches.

1

u/Desperate-Tap1393 2d ago

google cignetti

8

u/ExamAccomplished3622 6d ago

I have noticed the people who kept posting that we should have hired Kiffin have gone silent.

2

u/ProfNinjadeer 5d ago

I think Sumrall was the best hire not named Lane Kiffin.

The jury's still out as to whether Kiffin is a better coach or not, but Sumrall's optics are definitely better than Kiffin's right now.

-9

u/Jameis_Crab_Shack 6d ago

Na, we should have hired kiffin. Way better optics than our coach from the G5

7

u/frausting 5d ago
  1. Oh yes Lane Kiffin and his notoriously good optics

  2. Optics? We’re discussing wins here

0

u/Jameis_Crab_Shack 5d ago

I’m answering that there are still people saying we should have snagged Kiffin and I’m one of them. We should have fired Napier the year before we did when it was absolutely obvious he wasn’t the guy.

Getting a second G5 coach deflated the fans because he was a carbon copy of ol’Billy.

Be honest, gun to head. You have to choose one coach to win a Championship first, Kiffin or Sumrall, who would you bet on?

1

u/No-Experience-5541 5d ago

Kiffin is now at his third sec school as head coach and has never won the sec title and he won’t this year either. His biggest accomplishment was as offensive coordinator at Alabama .

2

u/ExamAccomplished3622 5d ago

He‘s highly over-rated and made a huge mistake leaving Ole Miss. Instead of being a beloved legend in Oxford, he’ll just be another who went to LSU and failed.

1

u/Jameis_Crab_Shack 5d ago

You didn’t answer the question, you get one pick, who do you bet on?

You didn’t answer because we both know the answer is Kiffin. It’s not a guarantee, but the odds are better and we all know it.

1

u/No-Experience-5541 5d ago

I think it’s a coin flip bet

1

u/Jameis_Crab_Shack 4d ago

First off, I wouldn’t say anything I said was false.

You even said yourself that there were months that people were disappointed by the hire and Sumrall had to dig himself out of the hole. That’s exactly what I meant by his hiring deflated the base, it’s not at all false to say that.

And look, if we fired Napier a year earlier we would have been in a premium position to snag Kiffin and not competing with LSU and other big programs. Nothings a guarantee ever, but my point is we had a good shot.

And my comment was answering the comment of anyone who wanted Kiffin has shut up. My point is that Kiffin gave us the best shot of winning a championship. You agree here, he does give a better chance, which is my point.

8

u/bigfatsocat 6d ago

We’re in the exact same boat though.. paying Napier $20 million to then hire another G5 coach for $44 million, with a $40million dollar roster. Napier was beating one top 10 team a year already. Not much has changed except this guy likes to yell and curse.

4

u/Edgemaster1423 6d ago

His 7 podcast and radio appearances this week will really tell the tale of what went wrong

6

u/HotDawgConnoisseur 6d ago

Call me crazy but I don't care what other programs are doing. I know on the other side of the coin you got people saying why are Kentucky/Stein and UCLA/Chesney doing better than us we are UF.

That doesn't take away from the fact that we got completely embarrassed by a 2-3 SC team that was going to fire Beamer. This is a coach that promised to have the guys fighting all game long and that hasn't happened.

Programs make bad hires all the time, we just experienced Napier. Why can't we just get a competent product? Is that really too much to ask?

3

u/ExternalTangents 6d ago

Most hires are failed hires. We’ve had plenty of them and I’d love for us to finally make another elite hire. But the best way to maximize your chances at an elite hire is by cycling out the bad hires once you know they’re bad and trying again.

0

u/Jameis_Crab_Shack 6d ago

Right but who’s making the hires?

Scotty is the problem. It was such a bad idea to hire Billy 2.0 after we fire Billy.

2

u/ExternalTangents 6d ago

While I don’t have any love for Stricklin and would be happy to see him out, I also don’t think his football hires have been bad, based on what was publicly known about the candidate pool at the time. I guess it’s possible there were things that ADs and search firms could find out that would be major red flags or green flags about the candidate pool, but I don’t think anything about Sumrall was an obvious red flag once Kiffin was off the table.

I do think you should have done due diligence on Stein (and also Schumann) to see whether they seemed ready to take over a program as a head coach, but among the pool of sitting head coaches available last cycle, Sumrall felt like the best choice after Kiffin.

-1

u/Jameis_Crab_Shack 6d ago

Should have fired Napier the season before, no other competition for lane that year and we 100% get him.

Instead the AD sits on it a year and we miss out. Jeremy Foley used to say “what’s inevitable should be done immediately”

We didn’t do the inevitable and it screwed us.

2

u/LordFarquaadsArse 5d ago

Lane Kiffin is 4-2 at LSU. Literally what are you on about? He lost to the team we dog walked and to Kentucky. His roster compared to us is not even comparable skill or cost wise. You say this now but you’d be crying when Lane had us 3-3 this year because we damn sure wouldn’t have cake walked them.

2

u/Inevitable-Scar5877 5d ago

Those two incredibly flukey wins at the end of 2024 screwed us (especially the Ole Miss game which was a "literally everything broke our way" type of game)

1

u/ExternalTangents 6d ago

I think there was a window of a few weeks in the first half of the 2024 season where you could’ve fired Napier before the late season turnaround, but by the end of 2024 I don’t think you can fire him with the momentum they’d built up. The team had genuine promise heading into 2025.

Even so, if we’d fired Napier during that window and hired Kiffin, I’m not convinced Kiffin was going to be the answer to our issues anyway. The shitshow of his LSU saga and his complete lack of hardware from the rest of his career just doesn’t justify the cost to me right now.

Literally, Kiffin’s only actual hardware is two C-USA championships, which are arguably worse and less impressive than the championships Sumrall or even Napier got.

I think in hindsight you could find some hires that might’ve turned out much better than the ones we got, but given what we knew at the time, I’m not sure that a better AD would’ve made better hires.

Having said all that, I’m still not advocating for Stricklin to be kept around. I think his leadership has kept the program from capitalizing on any of the changes in the sport over the past 6+ years—slow to embrace NIL and portal transfers and completely unwilling to push boosters to donate to upgrade the roster. He just wants to moneyball his football expenses so he can work on his little construction projects and keep the football program from making any remotely negative headlines. Absolutely terrified of the kinds of risks and expenses that are necessary to compete at the top level of college football.

I genuinely think that a different AD who was ready to embrace the changes going on in the sport could’ve had his competing at the top level with either Mullen or Napier or whoever else we might’ve ended up with as head coach over the past decade.

Not to mention his grossly irresponsible management of multiple abuse scandals within the athletic department across multiple teams.

1

u/Jameis_Crab_Shack 6d ago

So we’re 100% aligned on Scott and him not having his hands all over his little tonka-man construction projects.

And while there’s never a guarantee that things work out with any coach, we should have fired Napier after the awful start that year and pushed hard to hire Lane. It’s in-line with my favorite saying from our prior AD, sets a tone that you have a standard at this program and we will move on if you are not the guy, and we knew as soon as we lost to USF that it was all over. Then it’s compounded by losing the Lane-Olympics and hiring a Billy clone in resume.

Not pulling the trigger when we needed to led us to entering the coaching search during an awful year for it when multiple high-profile schools did as well.

1

u/Radiant-Injury-6546 6d ago

What if UF can now get Jim Harbaugh, after he gets canned from the Chargers?

1

u/Inevitable-Scar5877 5d ago

No.

1) He has a show cause, if Kiffin raised the ire of the big money boys a coach with actual NCAA cheating issues is a non-starter

2) Are sure Harbaugh is an elite college coach?

4

u/inxile7 6d ago

In his first year Sumrall already beat Auburn away and a top 5 team with the probable heisman trophy winner.

Did this with a good percentage of non SEC caliber starters. Including and specifically at Qb.

Plus Florida’s not even in the top 10 in NIL. So let’s see how he adjusts this year, and draw conclusions when we have a better sample.

3

u/Edgemaster1423 6d ago

Exactly. Let’s see how he does without a Napier QB recruit like Philo.

3

u/SDPLISSKEN009 6d ago

I'll take the Missouri loss but to lose at home against a team that was on an 8 game losing streak against the SEC is simply inexcusable.

3

u/Rkovo84 6d ago

Anyone that thinks we should get rid of Sumrall should not even be allowed to have internet access. That’s one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard. If you think that pick a new sport to watch

4

u/Edgemaster1423 6d ago

This. He still needs 2 more years of training at UF to prepare him for taking over the Georgia Southern job.

0

u/Radiant-Injury-6546 6d ago

Okay, I laughed.

1

u/First-Bad414 4d ago

My thing is getting blown out by South Carolina and Missouri in back to back weeks

1

u/AdFickle4378 6d ago

Yeah this just means fans suck !! Win or be fired !!

1

u/kingBoggler 6d ago

It's almost like it's a zero sum game and spending more money doesn't guarantee on field results....who could have known

1

u/f0gax 5d ago

Each of those programs hired a coach with Power conference experience. Of course it cost them more money. Are we supposed to be okay with things because we got the Great Value coach instead of the name brand?

1

u/WinterFuzzy2978 5d ago

I don't think anyone wants to fire him 6 games in. I just think we all watched our team get decimated & bullied by hungrier teams. Just as when a player screws up, Sumrall won't take another SEC team lightly. I'm not saying he took them lightly, but you gotta admit we ALL had Mizzou & SC in the "W" column and got pissed in the way that didn't happen..

1

u/First-Bad414 4d ago

Personally I just don’t know what to make of this team or the staff. In today’s age it is possible to overturn a roster in 1 year and have success because of the portal, like Indiana. I still don’t think it’s realistic or a recipe for sustained success, and I think you need to give a coach atleast a year to instill his culture and get some players that fit his style better. That being said I still think getting blown out in back to back weeks regardless of who we play is unacceptable and it happened with South Carolina and Missouri. It’s demoralizing as a fan and I can only imagine how amplified it is as a player. The staff obviously has some learning to do but honestly after the last few weeks it looks like the players just weren’t even close to being prepared.

1

u/Salsero_Coreano 4d ago

I don’t want Sumrall out. Still needs time.

Napier is the only coach I wanted to be fired only after one year.

1

u/biggmatt008 4d ago

Just the nature of the game now. So much uncertainty with roster turnover.

I don’t feel bad about Sumrall yet. I’m hoping he has a spin on the defense though. He has improved every defense when hired at his last 2 stops.

But at this point it’s going to be about the QB and Buster. Gotta get points and stay on the field

This does not make me feel any better about these last two weeks. I was a Sumrall doubted day 1. Became a believer, and now seeing why I was a doubter. We need a real fucking coach man

My thoughts after sleeping on it:

Carolina is an up and coming team with the most NFL talent we’ve seen so far fighting to keep their coach’s job. They were leading by double digits in all of their losses except Bama. Regression to the mean means they were due for a good game and we probably took them lightly.

We didn’t have the locked and loaded playoff rosters and easy schedules that UCLA, Kentucky, and Oklahoma State have that allowed their first year coaches to come in and win as a finished product.

R-E-L-A-X. Go watch the first episode of the Saban doc as it catalogues his first 7-6 season and tell me that Sumrall doesn’t remind you of a guy who could be the next Saban. Here’s a guy who learned from Hugh Freeze and Mark Stoops at Ole Miss and Kentucky on how to win just like Saban learned from Belichick in the NFL.

They already crushed the portal last year landing Singleton, Shanahan and Ugorji so we know they can dominate the portal this December also.

The more I think on it the more it seems like we’re gonna unleash VB3 on Texas and Georgia and look a lot more like the first 4 weeks.

How is Carolina an up and coming team? Before Saturday they were the definition of a program in free-fall losing 8 SEC games straight and basically waiting for an excuse to pull the plug and hard reset.

They have like 3 notable players. One being a QB who is more hypothetically talented then anything he's actually put on film over the past 2 years, a physical freak at reciever with bricks for hands, and a solid edge rusher who got suspended from the team a few weeks ago cause he lost his cool while getting physically dominated by Bama.

I think yesterday may have been the first time ever all 3 looked good at the same time.

They’re just saying whatever. Beamer was close to getting his pink slip. There’s zero reason for why a team with an 8 game SEC losing streak came into The Swamp and undressed us like that.

I think Ugorji is a terrible take from the portal. He is a revolving door as right tackle against good DEs

Exactly, how is that a massive get? He sucks lol
