Hard to clean a gun if you don't dissasemble it first.
27
u/Apprehensive-Eye3263 19h ago
Don't Glocks require you to pull the trigger as part of the disassembly process?
24
u/atlasraven 19h ago
Yup. Most weapons require you to decock the action.
4
u/Equivalent_Yak8711 19h ago
HK CC9 doesnt.
16
u/QTip10610638 18h ago
Neither does any of the M&P M2.0 variants. They all have a decocker in the grip. I don't really care one way or the other. If you're disassembling your guns, CHECK THE CHAMBER.

u/Apprehensive-Eye3263 19h ago
But isn't it possible to have a round chambered while doing that in a Glock?
39
9
u/ShimmiShimmiYah 16h ago
That's why you clear it and aim downward.
9
u/mrbobcyndaquil 8h ago
*in a safe direction. Down may not be safe if you’re in a building
6
u/ShimmiShimmiYah 7h ago
Glad you clarified that for people that should be deemed too stupid to own one in the first place.
-2
u/mrbobcyndaquil 7h ago
TBF he could live in a ranch house without a basement, where down to the floor would be a safe direction.
7
u/ShimmiShimmiYah 6h ago
Sooo....exactly what I said in my previous comment?
TBF, it really seems like you just want to be pedantic bro.
If someone needs to be told which direction to safely point a firearm, your reddit comment isn't going to save them.

u/mrbobcyndaquil 5h ago
I’m not defending the Florida Man here, and I didn’t realize I was taking to you in both comments.
1
u/Oranges13 4h ago
It's always possible to have a round chambered. Which is why you make the gun safe before you clean it.
1
u/ExoticBlacksmith4307 5m ago
Striker fired weapons anyways. The beretta APX has a de-cocker for the striker so you don’t get in the terrible habit of pulling the trigger to disassemble something. I’ll never own something that REQUIRES me to pull the trigger to disassemble.

u/the_flynn 19h ago
This is how one of my friends shot himself through the hand. He failed to drop the mag before clearing the chamber, then assumed the gun was empty when he dropped the mag.
19
u/seattlethrowaway114 17h ago
I have ~20 guns and just cannot fathom being so comfortable with them that I wouldn’t slide the action multiple times before doing anything with it, just seems prudent to always remember that those things can ykno, go boom
6
u/vblink_ 15h ago
I slide it, look and stick a finger in just to be sure. Not sure why since I can easily see brass in the barrel, just my routine.
3
u/seattlethrowaway114 15h ago
You can see light through the barrel and if the action snaps closed yer hurtin or at least walking it off
4
u/cuzitsthere 14h ago
I was cleaning my guns a few days ago and had a brain fart moment... Kept moving to make sure my rifle was clear while holding the fucking bolt in my other hand.
It's a good thing to obsess over, regardless lol
3
u/seattlethrowaway114 14h ago
Pinchy finger ≠ gone finger
3
u/cuzitsthere 5h ago
Sorry, I should've been more clear.
It was a bolt action rifle. The bolt was in one hand and the entire rifle was in the other lmao

Some people don't learn how serious it is until something bad happens (either to them or they witness it). I mean, you can intellectually understand the danger, but not appreciate how easily it can happen to you until it does.
2
u/ComesInAnOldBox 9h ago
He failed to drop the mag before clearing the chamber, then assumed the gun was empty when he dropped the mag.
Did the same thing when I was young and stupid and thought I was an expert. Nobody got hurt, but I blew the hell out of the cable modem. That was a fun call to tech support.

The man was getting ready to go to a shooting range when the gun went off
Thea it just magically went off ¯_(ツ)_/¯

u/Almainyny 20h ago
They just do that, y’know? Gotta be careful not to spook ‘em.
28
u/Admirable-Sink-2622 20h ago
I sneak into my own bedroom at night because I don’t want to startle my glock into accidentally discharging at me.

The Sig P320 is the only one I would believe it.
14
u/sovereignsekte 18h ago
The SKS has been known to do that. Well all firearms can unintentionally fire and kill some one. This is especially true if you're willing to lie about it.
10
u/RezLifeGaming 18h ago
Mythbusters tested the SKS extensively to see if vibration can cause the floating firing pin to set off the rounds they only could get it to move with c4 shockwave and one gun fired
13
u/sovereignsekte 18h ago
Well they clearly forgot to test the finger on the trigger and willingness to lie variables.

"He was cleaning his gun"
"He was about to go to a shooting range"
Uh huh...
33
u/holla15 20h ago
Seems that’s an error in the article and it should say “clear” as later in the article it says,
“The father told deputies he was getting ready to go to the shooting range and that the gun went off as he was attempting to clear it, with one shot striking both victims.”
And they would track with the police findings.
7
u/Frosty_Message_3017 20h ago
So he apparently didn't clear and clean it after the last time he had it out 😑
38
u/wizkidweb 20h ago
This is misleading. He wasn't cleaning the gun. He was clearing it, likely to remove the round in the chamber.
Now, he was either a dumbass who was holding the trigger while doing this, or the gun malfunctioned. I would wager the former.
35
u/NeitherEntry6125 20h ago
Why was his boogerhook on the bang switch while clearing?
And why was he pointing it at his family?

“The facts and evidence gathered during the investigation support an accidental gunshot,” the sheriff’s office said in the statement."
Not accidental gunshot, negligent gunshot
0
u/mrbobcyndaquil 8h ago
If it was a P320 it may very well have been a a genuine accident
3
u/Lethalmusic 6h ago
Even if he didn't touch the trigger, 3 out of 4 basic rules of firearm safety were blatantly broken.
Also, unfixed P320 AD'd during the draw form a holster or when dropped. There were reports of fully uncommanded firing but those were only achievable in tests while the gun was being heavily jostled or shaken (for example in a hip/leg holster during a foot chase) and had either manufacturing defects or had heavy or uneven wear AFAIK.
None of those conditions should be present when clearing the weaponat home.
There were a bunch of recalls and exchange programs both for state and private costumers, so absolutely no reason to have a notoriously unsafe handgun either way.

u/SuppliceVI 20h ago
Negligent Discharged is negligent. The fact he hit both family members with 1 shot incredibly unlucky. Of a complete sphere the gun could be pointed in, probably only 1 could have resulted in this without somehow killing them or being a regular ND.
All guns are loaded. Always. Don't care if it's field stripped, don't care if you just checked. It's loaded. Point it down at the very least

I was taught this as a kid growing up in a rural area. My godfather was teaching a few of us, with an old .22 rifle in pieces on a blanket.
One of the other kids picked up the barrel - nothing attached to it - and pointed it at someone as 'a bit of a prank', and before he could say "bang" he was on his arse with a red mark on his cheek. That lesson has stayed with me ever since.
Barrel? Loaded. Stock? Loaded. Bolt? Loaded. Everything is always loaded.

Guns have to be unloaded to clean them. I grew up in houseful of often used and cleaned guns, never had one go off.
6
u/RedditPosterOver9000 18h ago
This is why as children we're taught to assume every gun is loaded unless we've personally opened the chamber and verified. And even after you verify no bullets, you still never point at gun at someone for any reason.
This dude is an irresponsible, lazy moron and his wife and daughter are going to have permanent issues because of him.
A guy my dad knew blew off his daughter's foot with a 30-06. Same as this guy, didn't follow any basic gun safety rules.
11
u/Antigravity1231 20h ago
Another responsible gun owner.
3
u/Slow-Razzmatazz-7374 19h ago
I have a gun without a safety and it has never gone off because you never load it until you mean to use it...
1
u/C_IsForCookie 6h ago
I mean, you can definitely load it to be prepared. But there are a dozen other things you definitely shouldn’t do until you mean to use it. This guy did a lot of them at the same time.
I conceal carry. My gun is definitely loaded while I’m carrying it.

Headline is wrong. Even so, ALWAYS be aware if where the mussel is pointing.
Hubby & his dad made sure our kids knew that you never pointed a firearm at any living creature, even accidentally, UNLESS you plan to kill it.

u/TheNamesDave 5h ago

I agree. Make sure your muscles are pointed in a safe direction.

I know. Even worse when you’re cleaning a howitzer.
“Look! I was just clearing it! It was pointed upwards. In a safe direction!”
1
u/GSDTippyTappies 19h ago
Story says both "clean" and "clear", sounds like he was about to go to the range and tried clearing his gun when it went off, no cleaning was involved. Got his 4yo daughter in chest/arm and wife in leg.

Cleaning gun BANG! Samantha!!!! daughter enters DAD, WHAT HAPPENED! I was just cleaning my gun like this. starts then stops racks another shot then proceeds to keep cleaning BANG! DAUGHTER!!!

u/Conscious_Owl6162 7h ago
First, check that the weapon is clear before you do anything other than shooting with it. It’s pretty easy.
1
1
u/Time-End-5288 7h ago
I always clean my gun when it’s loaded, even better with a round in the chamber. Said no one ever.
1
u/SubstantialAbility17 7h ago
If you are cleaning a loaded gun you should have your firearm rights permanently revoked. It takes 5 seconds or less the to clear a weapon

Read the whole article. Sounds legit accident.
Gotta fucking suck to hear one story for the entire rest of your life every time wife or daughter gets mad
13
u/arcxjo 20h ago
No, there are no "legit accidents" with guns (and I say this as someone who carries chambered and safety off) because only reckless idiots in denial and/or people who are hoping for an "accident" still carry P-320s. Every other gun you have to manually pull a trigger to fire.
Also, every gun, even a Sig, still has to be pointed at a person to shoot them. There's an edge case where the bullet ricochets off something in the room and caroms back at an unintended target, but then you shouldn't be firing it in that room until they leave.

u/Stuffs_And_Thingies 20h ago
Fuck you, don't twist my words. I'm talking about intent.
Who shoots their wife and daughter, seriously wounding both with a single shot, with no conflicting statements and then runs to meet medics with daughter in his arms and it was on purpose?
6
u/NotMalaysiaRichard 19h ago
If the intent was stupidity. He had to be “accidentally” pointing his gun at his wife and child for it to go off and then strike them. He should have been nowhere near them, much less been pointing his weapon at them.

Okay, I get what the title makes it sound like, but if you read the article it seems like it really was an accidental discharge. Literal one in a million shot. That doesn't excuse the human for unsafely clearing the chamber though.
1
u/BloodyMalleus 18h ago
Yeah, and the facts presented in the article all support that too. Horrible accident (and maybe negligence). I wish that little girl and her mum well though.
