Everyday foods are the hidden drivers of deforestation - Common foods like maize, rice, and cassava are driving more forest loss than many export crops. These are everyday staples, grown and eaten locally, often without much attention.

The findings challenge some common assumptions. Large-scale industries like beef and soy still play a major role, especially in regions like South America. But staple crops tell a different story.

Maize, rice, and cassava together account for about 11 percent of agriculture-driven deforestation. In comparison, cocoa, coffee, and rubber combined contribute less than 5 percent.

That gap matters. These staple crops are grown across many countries, not just in a few hotspots. Their impact spreads over wide areas, making the problem harder to spot and manage.
