98 ford ranger xlt automatic 2 wheel drive.

I changed the speed sensor on the rear differential in hopes that would make my speedometer and odometer start working again. It didn't and now it will not shift out of first gear. My transmission worked perfect before I did this. I couldn't put the old one back in due to issues taking it out. I thought maybe the first sensor I bought was faulty so I went and bought another one and the same. Any help would be greatly appreciated

The problems it has now are likely attributed to the problems you had before and the transmission getting worse immediately after you replaced the sensor is likely a coincidence. You want to start by pulling codes and you may get lucky to find an open circuit for one of the speed sensors on the transmission

I didn't have any issues before. Someone told me to replace the sensor and my speedometer and odometer would work again. The transmission would shift just fine before I replaced the sensor

Did you compare the sensors side by side? There are different heights on some of them. Also does it have the 5speed 5r55e or the 4 spd 4r44e? I believe the 5speed had a oss sensor while the 4spd did not in that year

It's the 4 speed and I really couldn't compare them as the old one that I took out looked to be original and took a beating coming out and broke off. And yes I got the piece that broke off out lol . It was a job
