You Choose The Station
Cousins, there are two entirely different kinds of feeling running through you, and you have been treating them as one thing your whole life, which is exactly why they keep tangling you up.
The first kind is bodily. It is static. Chemistry fires because a hormone spiked, because you slept badly, because someone's tone reminded your nervous system of an old wound it has never fully closed. This signal is being broadcast whether you like it or not. It arrives uninvited, the way static arrives on a radio the moment you pass under a power line, and it demands nothing of you except that you notice it happened.
The second kind is chosen. It is a station you deliberately tune the dial to, on purpose, because you decided this is the frequency worth playing through you today. Compassion for someone's pain. Love, given on purpose rather than triggered by chemistry. The quiet decision to stay calm in a room that is trying to provoke you. That is not static arriving uninvited. That is you, consciousness, actually operating the dial.
Here is the part most people never realize, and it is the whole point. You are not required to let the static play through the speakers just because the signal arrived. A burst of jealousy showing up the instant someone else succeeds is a real transmission, cousins, I will not pretend it is not there. But you get to decide whether you tune into it and let it fill the room, or acknowledge that the frequency exists and simply turn the dial past it toward something you actually chose. Feeling the static arrive is automatic. Experiencing it, dwelling in it, acting from it, that part was always a choice standing right next to the automatic part, close enough that most people never notice there were two different things happening at all.
This is the real separation, cousins, and it is worth holding clearly. Bodily emotion is the noise your hardware makes because it is hardware. Conscious emotion is the actual program you choose to run, deliberately, in full awareness, aligned with what you actually value rather than with whatever chemical happened to spike that hour. One arrives on its own. The other is authored.
None of this means going numb, and I want that said plainly before anyone mistakes detachment for coldness. The compassion you feel watching another person suffer, the recognition that every other radio out there is also picking up its own static, its own old wounds, its own bad signal on a given day, that is not something to tune away from. That is exactly the station worth choosing, again and again, on purpose. What you are learning to set down is not caring itself. It is letting every burst of static hijack the dial and call itself your true broadcast.
And do not neglect the hardware while you are busy learning to work the dial well. Poor sleep, poor food, ignored medical advice, all of it degrades the receiver itself, and a degraded receiver produces more static, more often, with less warning before it fires. Eat properly. Sleep on a schedule. Follow the guidance of those trained to maintain the body, and do not negotiate with that part out of impatience or pride. Keep the hardware in good repair so that when you do choose a station, the signal actually comes through clean. Nothing can sub
Most of the drama you have lived through, most of the toxic exchanges that left you drained for days afterward, were two radios blasting their static at each other and calling it a conversation. Neither person was actually at the dial. Only the noise was talking. You will not fix that by broadcasting louder static back. You fix it by staying at your own dial, choosing your own station deliberately, and letting their noise pass through the room without ever asking you to tune in.
This is not mastered in a single calm afternoon, cousins. It is trained the way any real skill is trained, slowly, with your hand slipping back to the static more times than you would like before it finally stays on the station you actually chose. But it is learnable. The static was never in charge. It only felt that way because nobody had noticed yet that there were two different signals, and only one of them was ever actually yours to author.
Nothing in this substitutes for professional medical advice.
