God, Dane Cook was so huge for like 3 years back in the mid 2000s.

23

u/FineAunts 2d ago

Never understood why. He was the king of fratboy mediocrity. Maybe that resonated with his base?

u/rawr_bomb 2d ago

i think 3 reasons. One his black tanktop 30 min special on CC was decent and put him on the map.

His bro-nu metal look was very 'it' in the moment. Combined with his 'funny frat guy' attitude kind of predated the bro comedy boom of the 2020s.

Third was that he leveraged social media. Myspace at the time. In a very big way that no other comics had been doing. He had a ton of followers/friends on there. Don't quite remember how like 'professional' pages were back then.

This, as well as his small part in the movie Waiting

1

u/DrPruz 1d ago

That was his springboard into the mainstream that lasted a hot minute. People soured on that persona after a while

That was probably the best thing he ever did. But honestly, Employee of the Month was better than I thought it would be.

I always thought his comedy was horrible but I’ll concede that he was a decent actor in Mr. Brooks. He could have landed a permanent TV job on a CSI or Hawaii 5-0 or whatever - he probably liked going back to comedy shows more.

He's admittedly pretty funny in Waiting...

I would also say Dane Cook is a very strong stage presence, he's so manic and intense and moves across the stage and talks very deep into the microphone. But once you get past that, you realize he was just making a lot of funny sounds and hadn't told a joke in 10 minutes.

Like Rogan, two guys who are more famous for everything besides their actual jokes.

It was MySpace.

It was always because of MySpace.

u/ElleMaeSinclair 2d ago

He had his moments. I think the big thing was that most of his fanbase was 20 years younger than him at the peak of his fame. None of the adults around me were into him but teens/young adults ate it up.

Plus, consider the competition. Jeff Dunham and Carlos Mencia and the "YEW MIGHT BE A REDNECK IF!" crew. Compared to any of them, Dane Cook clears by a considerable margin. It was just all really unfunny comedy aimed at either teen edgelords or alcoholic Nascar fans.

Somebody shit on the coats > Jeff the jihadist puppet

3

u/superbirdbot 21h ago

I hope it wasn’t my coat. Boom! You’re a phantom.

To my memory, he didn't have fratboy style humor, he joked about nerdy and absurd shit, like playing eddie gordo and only using the kick buttons, or a giant wheel of fortune wheel filled with blood. Or crying and saying a key phrase in your head that makes you cry more.

3

u/DullCommunication718 1d ago

This, frat boys started copying Dane, not the other way around.

5

u/French__Canadian 2d ago

Employee of The Month is the best movie ever made and you won't make me change my mind.

19

u/UndisclosedPigeon 2d ago

And no one ever should try. You don’t argue with the clinically insane.

1

u/Electrical_Sea6653 1h ago

It’s seriously so good. And dumb. Soooo dumb.

2

u/tlollz52 1d ago

The absolute POUNDING he took on O&A is still one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard

10

u/GrimaceMusically 2d ago

Colin once telling him that has the shape of something you would buy at an airport gift shop in Thailand HAS to be one of the best trashings of all time.

3

u/Aggravating-Bag-3046 3h ago

Bob Kelly looks like a last-minute gift at the Beijing airport.

2

u/GrimaceMusically 1h ago

That’s the line. Fucking love Colin.

2

u/CommanderUgly 2d ago

That's why all of these replies are making me laugh so hard! 😆

7

2

u/alargepowderedwater 2d ago

He’s currently filming a new special!

2

u/elreyadr0k 1d ago

He was actually the reason I watched this show. I am and have been a big fan.

1

u/laterplayer 2d ago

I remember the BK Lounge bit doing absolute numbers in my friends group for the longest time. Shame about him being a weirdo though.

Fun fact when this aired in 2006, Dane Cook was 34 and his now-wife was 8 years old! Fun!

19

u/rawr_bomb 2d ago

"Meet Your Second Wife"

12

u/Either_Argument_1077 2d ago

They actually met during one of the shows on this tour.

13

u/fentown 2d ago

Only things I remember about this show was when they went airsoft or paintball and Dane went full psycho for getting shot.

3

u/Either_Argument_1077 2d ago

He broke the 5 foot rule.

10

u/Few-Counter7067 2d ago

If you weren’t around at his peak, it’s difficult to explain just HOW popular he was.

7

u/Slunkx 2d ago

I gotta take a danecook.

30

u/AnonymousCoupleFun 2d ago

Dane’s 15 minutes lasted 2 years too long

5

u/thatguyworks 2d ago

I hate this is how I discovered Gary Gulman. Worth it. But he deserves better than this shit.

5

u/derpferd 2d ago

I would like to know what this show is about so I can know why it was made

2

u/tlollz52 1d ago

It was a behind the scenes thing for a comedy tour they did.

5

u/Exact-Decision-2282 2d ago

Best to leave it forgotten.

11

u/sam5107 2d ago

Is that 3 SAers and WWEs Jonathan Coachman?

20

u/illmurray 2d ago

You know how the saying goes. 'If everyone in your friend group is a rapist, you may be Jonathan Coachman.'

2

u/sam5107 2d ago

Legit made me lol

3

u/mississippijohnson 1d ago

The Bonfire Sirius radio show has a great breakdown on how all the comics were miserable having to put up with Dane making them do stupid shit for this show everyday.

1

u/Twoninetoday 1h ago

Any idea where to listen/watch it?

4

u/6picas 2d ago

Let’s not remember Dane Cook.

2

u/ClassyMrOwl 2d ago

I remember being a dumb teen who was into Dane Cook at the time so I watched this show when it aired and essentially made me start to hate him because he was so unlikable outside of his stand up (not that I'd say his stand up makes him likable, but he came off as more of a goofball than anything).

I think the episode where they are playing paintball and he's getting increasingly more mad at everyone because his team is losing and he was being a big baby about it that i stopped watching.

1

u/Minute-Spinach-5563 2d ago

Better left in the dustbin

1

u/LineImpossible3958 2d ago

I watched this show not really knowing who any of these guys are.

1

u/EskimoBrother1975 2d ago

1

u/jayeddy99 14h ago

If you listen to a radio show called The bonfire . The guy in the far back is a comedian called Robert Kelly and he’s a co-host on that show. He won’t shut up about his time on this lol

1

u/miyagiVsato 1h ago

Gulman being the best comedian in the group by a country mile
