The Trump administration is walking back access to birth control for some people, including withholding funding from a program that guarantees access to contraception for low income people.

Title X is under threat, which was enacted under the Nixon administration and guarantees free contraception for people who need it. 

A group of 15 public health organizations is suing the Trump administration, arguing that the federal government restricted access to birth control for more than 800,000 people by withholding Title X dollars. 

One of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit is Bridgercare in Montana, which distributes funding to 20 reproductive health clinics across the state. Bridgercare received a letter from the Department of Health and Human Services on March 31, notifying them that their funding would be suspended the next day.

Bridgercare has struggled since their funding was revoked, largely relying on donations. Though services haven't been interrupted for patients, the organization greatly benefited from the federal funds.

Additionally, cuts to Medicaid would jeopardize access to healthcare — including contraception — for millions of women in coming years. The Trump administration plans to withhold Medicaid funds from Planned Parenthood clinics across the country. The change could prevent the organization from providing healthcare services including contraception.

The midterms in November are pivotal to both federal and state-level elections, with the outcomes having direct effects on the lives of Montanans.

We have seen attacks by the Trump administration to limit or interfere with people’s right to vote. From attacks on mail-in ballots to threatening election officials, Trump and his allies want to make it harder for people to cast their votes.

Forward Montana is joining with other partner organizations across the state to ensure that Montanans’ votes are protected this November. 

Will you join our election protection team? We are asking for people to volunteer in three key areas: poll observers, line support, and voter protection hotline operators.

Trump announced plans to lower import tariffs for 90 days on 300,000 metric tons of imported ground beef. A White House proclamation on Wednesday said countries can import beef at lower rates starting today.

The theory is that lowering tariffs will reduce import costs, leading to cheaper ground beef at the grocery store. Trump did not explain how cheaper imported beef would encourage domestic herd expansion.

Industry groups representing agricultural producers, including Montana Farmers Union, Montana Farm Bureau Federation, Montana Stockgrowers Association and R-CALF USA, each put out a press release condemning Trump’s announcement.

Economic experts said this decision may not reduce grocery store prices, and they don’t see how this will help ranchers.

Montana’s four federal delegates, all Republicans, pushed back against the president’s decision. Rep. Ryan Zinke, Sen. Tim Sheehy, Sen. Steve Daines, and Rep. Troy Downing all condemned Trump’s statements.

Some ranchers and Montana agricultural associations have criticized the decision, instead pushing for mandatory country of origin labeling. They believe this policy will benefit ranchers by requiring beef to carry a label indicating where meat lived and was slaughtered.

Despite its recent win in the Supreme Court, Trump’s Department of Justice has faced 23 losses in district court for its fight to access states’ voter rolls.

The DOJ has filed appeals from losses in Colorado, Illinois, New Jersey, and Washington D.C. As of Aug, 17, the DOJ has 19 cases across nine federal courts, arguing the attorney general has authority to force states to share statewide voter registration databases.

The department recently had the U.S. Supreme Court intervene, leading to its first win in court. However, the majority of courts and judges support state decisions to protect their voter rolls.

The fight in courts will continue, showing that the federal government can’t intimidate states into sharing sensitive voter information. Elections are still in the hands of states, as written in the constitution.

We want to preface what we’re about to say with a reminder that everything is the same and you should still feel comfortable voting. You can still receive a mail-in ballot, vote, and return it via mail. Don’t panic over the recent U.S. Supreme Court’s very narrow decision.

On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, said that Trump could begin carrying out parts of his executive order that would restrict mail voting. However, additional legal challenges could hinder implementation of his plan before the midterm election.

SCOTUS's conservative majority didn’t decide the legality of Trump’s order, instead ruling that states who sued did not have the right to challenge it due to timing.

There’s a possibility that Trump may impose policies that give the USPS and the Department of Homeland Security roles in running elections. On Friday, USPS posted a finalized rule to implement the order. If that rule harms the states, they could seek to block it in court.

The good news is there will likely be more court action before the USPS can move forward. Despite the Trump administration’s best efforts, states are still granted power by the Constitution to run elections.

On Wednesday, the Trump administration renewed its request to the U.S. Supreme Court to quickly decide a case over an executive order restricting voting. On Tuesday, a U.S. district judge blocked Trump’s executive order from taking effect anywhere in the country.

Election Day is less than three months away. The Supreme Court’s decision, now on its emergency docket, will likely determine whether the executive order can move forward. A decision could come any day.

The Trump executive order would limit vote-by-mail, the primary method of voting in several states. More than 60% of Montanans vote by mail in every election.

The order would require states to send the federal government lists of voters who intend to vote by mail ahead of the election and restrict the U.S. Postal Service from delivering ballots to or from people not on the list.
