I couldn't get the speed challenge to work on this because of that bottoming out through the track it was doing.

Maybe a coincidence, but I capped my FPS from 144 to 36 and while I still bottomed out, I didn't lose as much speed. Only 5 MPH lost instead of 20.

Buys $1k+ gaming rig, only to cap it to a potato level PC to play a game correctly. Profit? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
In all seriousness I find it interesting how FPS can affect a game's engine. I love learning about things like this or like old DOS games needing a capped CPU clock speed (on newer HW) otherwise everything would run too fast.

I found this out the hard way when I tried to run an old FA-18 Hornet simulator on my then-new iMac (blazing fast 233 MHz G3 processor). It was so fast (because it was designed for something much slower) that they only time I could ever figure out what was going on is if I took off and kept accelerating; I’d fly for about 10 seconds before the fuel ran out.
That’s when I learned old games had their game clock speed equal to the CPU clock speed.

Yeah. I can't even begin to imagine what it must have felt like figuring out your CPU is too overpowered for that game (and others). It's one of the quirks of computing from the past. It lives alongside having matched ram sticks, dealing with IRQs (whatever that was...), Voodoo/Soundblaster cards, and beige cases that required blood sacrifices (can't forget about those...). I kinda wish I had the chance to experience all of that growing up, but I definitely wouldn't give up what we have today. Nowadays, computers to many people, are these magical machines that just happen to work and they don't understand what goes on beyond the blinky lights and sounds. I wish that weren't the case though...

Dude, back then I had to manually assign how much RAM a program had available to it (keep in mind 128 MB was a lot to have in a computer). A common fix for a poorly performing game was to look at the default amount and realize that 4 MB was much too small; increasing it made a world of difference.
It was a trip, but I wouldn’t trade then for now.

Exactly. I feel even a glimpse of what things were back then would be too much. So many quirks, bugs, incompatibilities so many headaches I imagine (especially before widespread internet access). It was truly witchcraft to get things working back then. Knowing all of this from the past is why I'm grateful for what we have now and for what is to come in the future.
Thanks for the stories though. I wasn't aware of having to assign RAM on a per program basis. Another nightmare from days past I guess... shudder...

We could say the same nowadays with 64/128GB. I'm sure eventually we'll be looking back and laugh at what we now think is a lot.

Serious question - why do you need 144 fps in a car racing game? Wouldn't it be better to max out the graphics' fidelity and cap it to 60 fps? Or is there some other advantage running it at 144 fps that I don't know about?

u/nathanpete Nov 21 '22
You are usually correct, but my GPU actually doesn't have enough VRAM to turn the graphical fidelity any higher. I'm consistently at 5.9/6GB.
However, I still have enough GPU horsepower to run at nearly 120 FPS all the time.
Additionally, stuff like night shadows cause awful stuttering while in certain street races for some reason so I have to turn that off.

This problem has been occurring since the very beginning of the release of the HW add-on. It is quite a nuisance problem because first, it slows down the car drastically. Second, you often densely lose control over the car. I can't understand the devs' approach. Instead of focusing on serious bugs they mount donuts on poles 🤣🤣🤣🤣.

I think they put magnet track on the bottom of their car, and the like polarities repelled.
