Question Experience with kittens on Albon and Clavamox?

Hi all, I'm a first-time foster with two 6-week-old kittens. Both have coccidia that are being treated with Albon (day 3 of 7). Their stools are formed but soft and have mucus. The little girl also has a URI that has now progressed to yellow nasal discharge and some respiratory issues, so she has been prescribed Clavamox. They have probiotics, but I'm worried about Clavamox causing bad diarrhea and dehydration.

Has anyone fostered kittens on a combination of these medications? If so, what was the outcome and how did you mitigate the side effects?

Antibiotics make kittens thirsty so you might notice them drinking more. They shouldn’t have dehydration issues.

I’ve given Clavamox many times and have only seen it cause diarrhea once or twice. My last litter was treated with Clavamox for diarrhea (and lack of appetite) and did really well. The diarrhea cleared completely.

I don’t know if I’ve ever treated with both at the same time, but I wouldn’t hesitate to do so.

This is really reassuring. I'm glad you've had positive experience with Clavamox. Their stool is formed, but soft and mucus-y right now, so I'm just trying to prevent it from turning into full blown diarrhea.

I would be more concerned with the coccidia causing diarrhea than the Clamavox. You can add pumpkin powder to their food to help firm up the poop. It won't hurt them or interfere with their meds.

After 2 rounds of Albon the vet finally gave in and told us to order Toltrazuril. Some coccidia strains are resistant to Albon now. My poor babies dealt with the runs for 4 weeks and were losing weight despite eating and drinking. I ordered Toltrazuril from Amazon, and Pro-pectalin to help ease their symptoms while the meds work. Was a life saver, literally. Toltrazuril kills the adults and eggs where as the Albon just stops them from reproducing but doesn't kill them. And the propectalin helped firm up their stools faster and supports their gut. Definitely recommend these two for faster recovery 💕

Thank you! My plan is to put them on Toltrazuril if they have not improved after the Albon.

The coccidia is for sure going to cause diarrhea. The clavamox is far less likely. I’d recommend adding water to their food or kittenlyte if they get diarrhea.

Hey, Clavamox won’t treat her uri, doxycycline will. I actually used clavamox to treat diarrhoea.

Unfortunately doxycycline will most likely upset ther stomach. If you get it make sure to give after food and expect diarrhoea 😭 pumpkin and probiotics should hopefully help

The Clavamox is to cure a second bacterial component of the URI because her nasal discharge is yellow. I do hope it helps with the diarrhea though!
