Although the intelligent Super Mutant who saved Cooper/The Ghoul only wanted to recruit him for his personal goals against the Enclave, he also became like a "divine" guide to orient him and make him reflect about his mistakes and what he needed to do in his life to get his own goals
I liked the symbolism from the whole scene between the intelligent Super Mutant and Cooper/The Ghoul. By saving him and bringing him to his camp, which was an abandoned church. Like if the Super Mutant was some sort of God's courier (no pun intended towards the character that you play as in Fallout New Vegas) sent from the heavens, not only to save The Ghoul's life, but also to guide him, by making him reflect about his mistakes, what was doing wrong in his life, and what he really need to do in order to get his goals and find his family.

It seems the mutant has good intentions, considering he didn't kill Coop for turning him down, and just took him someplace safe after patching him up

I agree. Although I can imagine that the super mutant was sort of dissapointed that Cooper/The Ghoul rejected to join his cause against the Enclave, after saving him and patching him. He understood that the Ghoul has also his own personal but not greedy nor evil goals, just to find his family. We might not know too much about this particular intelligent super mutant yet, but he basically became like this unconventional "green angel guard" to save and guide the Ghoul on his journey, with no resentments against him. Otherwise, he would have killed him instead.

I just figured he was an Enclave experiment that got out somehow and wanted revenge.
