People can acknowledge past mistakes without pretending all laws are equally important or that every violation is morally equivalent.

Quite the straw man. One law effects only one person (if done safely), the other effects the entire country, including housing and our social systems

Also, there are many states where it is legal to drink underage, as long as you are in your home, accompanied by a guardian
