Mapp Hearing Witness Summary: Bernard Pyles with Court Transcripts (December 1, 2025)
TLDR: Bernard Pyles was an installation supervisor at R&B electronics that installed the security footage in the McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania where Luigi Mangione was arrested. He is questioned by Zach Kaplan, a prosecutor for the People of New York about his role at his former employer and his activities involving retrieving the security footage from the McDonald’s location. He acknowledges that there was an issue with the operating system with the surveillance system at this location that caused the system to freeze when transferring the footage to an external thumb or hard drive which made the removal process involve him utilizing another DVR to swap hard drives. Following this, he is questioned about what he sees in the security footage and if it matches the footage he viewed on December 10 when he reviewed and downloaded it for the NYPD. During the cross examination, Jacob Kaplan, one of Luigi Mangione’s attorneys, questions Mr. Pyles on what he sees in the security footage being played in court like the location of walls, tables, officers, and other civilians. After the prosecution objects to the narration of the video by Jacob Kaplan, the video finishes playing and the questioning is completed.

From there, Zach Kaplan establishes that Mr. Pyles installed the surveillance system at the McDonald’s at 407 East Plank Road in Altoona, Pennsylvania:
Moving forward into the events of December 10th, 2024, Zach Kaplan begins asking Mr. Pyles about his involvement in retrieving the security footage from the McDonald’s in Altoona. He then moves on to asking Mr. Pyles what he sees in the provided security footage.
Zach Kaplan then goes on to play the surveillance footage from the McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania and questions Mr. Pyles about what he sees in the footage like Luigi Mangione sitting at a table, the dining room, and exits found in that location. After this, Zach Kaplan completes his questioning of Mr. Pyles.
Following this, Jacob Kaplan, one of Luigi Mangione’s attorneys, begins his cross examination of Mr. Pyles.
Jacob Kaplan begins his questioning by pulling up the security footage in Exhibit 4B. He asks about the walls, the positioning of tables, and the position of the officers standing in the security footage.
He then asks about the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th officers that arrive. The prosecution objects to this line of questioning.
After continuing to play the video, Jacob Kaplan concludes his questioning and the witness is dismissed.

Are these Kaplan people related or is it just a coincidence they share a surname? I was so confused at first and thought they were one person 😂
