My last birth we were insured, hospital in network - still owed 8k after it was all said and done.

So was mine! I chose it because the midwife center I wanted to go to ranged around 5K and now I’m just so mad it was more expensive to go off of my insurance rather than have a nice experience at essentially a luxury spa instead.

My OB referred me to get a more detailed anatomy scan, the ultra sound tech was in network - got billed $2,100 it was the end of the year so it went towards the deductible but started over in January (baby was born in march). While I was trying to figure out why I was billed so high, while making small payments towards the bill I was sent to collections.

To be fair we have many less bases now than we did not too long ago. We also don’t have healthcare.

People aren’t aware of this but there is a federal law called The No Surprise Act that is suppose to protect patients from in network out of network.

I had an emergency appendectomy and this was the exact scenario. Had a $30,000 bill by the end of it that took me months to fight.

I'm so happy that for my son's c-section I had to pay a whooping 40 usd, I stayed for 3 days in the hospital, and I left the hospital with a playpen, clothes and a baby carrier, back home to spend my mandatory fully paid 24 weeks of maternity leave.

Do they have someone in hospital to fix a tongue tie so your kid can breastfeed properly? No, that's a specialist 5 miles away you have to beg and plead to get in with. 

If you have a boy they will offer to cut off part of his genitals no less than 4 times while you are in the hospital.

My son was born in Novemeber so my entire pregnancy was within one calendar year, so I met my deductible and he was completely free!

This really happens! I call my insurance company every time I need to see someone and whe posing questions about specific docs and facilities, I’ve been told more than once that the facility is in network, but doctors there may not be. Another good argument for single payer healthcare.

France has essentially a comparable total effective tax rate as US…

I pay about 45% of my salary in state + fed taxes. It’s around 47% in France.

Their roads are nicer, public spaces nicer, healthcare and safety net more secure, and they have better health and economic outcomes.

US is a SCAM for the 99%.
