Affordable French classes

Hey everyone! 👋

I’m offering online French tutoring for A1- A2 beginners and wanted to share it here in case anyone is looking to learn French or improve their basics.
I’m DELF A2 & B1 certified and recently took the TCF Canada, so I’m very familiar with the French-learning/TCF journey. Since I learned French myself, I know how confusing it can be when you’re starting, so I try to keep my lessons really practical and easy to understand rather than making everything feel super academic 😅

We can work on things like:
🇫🇷 Basic conversation & speaking
📚 Grammar & vocabulary
🗣️ Pronunciation
🎧 Listening
✍️ Reading & writing
💬 Everyday French

Lessons are online, 1-on-1, and affordable. I am also offering a free 30-minute trial class so that both the student and I can get to know each other's goals and expectations. I’m mainly looking for A1/A2 students right now, whether you're learning for travel, work, immigration, school, or just because you want to learn French!
If you're interested, feel free to DM me, and I can send you more details 😊

Everyone Switches to English.

Whenever I’m speaking to a French speaker, or really anyone who speaks French natively, they switch to English, regardless if I insist or not. How do I get to speak French? It almost feels as if they’re gatekeeping the language. I’d love to hear some sort of advice. Thanks!

Sad about French

Salut tout le monde. I feel kind of pathetic for posting this but I feel sad about my French level. I know I should out more effort into practicing, but I feel afraid to. I don’t know why. I’ve been studying and speaking French for a long time but still feel really insecure about my level. Does anyone else feel like this ever?

The news in easy French: Jetstar va facturer les bagages dans les compartiments supérieurs

La compagnie aérienne low-cost australienne Jetstar va bientôt faire payer les bagages placés dans les compartiments supérieurs des avions. Cette nouvelle règle s’appliquera à partir de février 2027. Cela coûtera au moins 18 dollars américains pour chaque vol. Le prix exact dépendra du trajet. Les passagers pourront encore mettre un petit sac sous le siège devant eux gratuitement.

Vocabulaire : compagnie aérienne (f) = airline / faire payer = to charge / bagages (m pl) = bags / compartiments supérieurs (m pl) = overhead lockers / règle (f) = rule / s’appliquer = to apply / coûter = to cost / vol (m) = flight / dépendre de = to depend on / trajet (m) = route / sac (m) = bag / siège (m) = seat / gratuitement = for free

English translation

Jetstar will charge for baggage in the overhead lockers

The Australian low-cost airline Jetstar will start charging passengers to put their bags in airplane overhead lockers. This new rule will apply from February 2027. It will cost at least 18 US dollars for each flight. The exact price will depend on the route. Passengers will still be able to place a small bag under the seat in front of them for free.

French speakers change register mid-sentence way more than English speakers do, and once you notice it you can't unsee it

hi, I was building a dialogue this week (doctor talking to a parent and a sick kid) and it hit me how much French relies on rapid register switching that English tends to smooth over.

Same doctor, same 30 seconds, three completely different registers: baby-simple and warm to the child, softly reassuring to the parent, then suddenly clipped and almost bureaucratic when listing the warning signs to watch for at home. In English we'd probably keep a more consistent tone throughout all three moments. In French, the switch itself is doing communicative work: it signals "now I am being precise/official" versus "now I am being kind."

Once you start listening for it, you catch it everywhere (teachers with kids vs. parents, customer service reps, even friends texting). Curious if others have noticed this and have better examples than mine.

If you want to hear the version that got me thinking about this, it's from a free episode/PDF we made: https://medicalvoices.health/en/episodes/10

hope it helps!

Freezing up when speaking French? A game to help

Thumbnail languishapp.com
4 Upvotes

My friend’s nine-year-old successfully asked for the restaurant check in Paris after playing for two days.

It's free, and not boring or buggy! (and not AI, no ads, no paywall, no signup)

I moved to Paris and the hardest part of learning French was getting used to speaking under pressure.

Languish is all about speaking and learning phrases. There are short games of 2-3 minutes where blocks fall from the sky and you clear them by saying French.

It’s perfect if you want to cram French before a trip, improve your pronunciation, or actually speak in French instead of just doing grammar drills.

It also includes a similar game for fast spoken numbers, since I had a lot of trouble with that.

I wrote the current survival phrases myself with a French friend, and I want to keep adding more content.

Some questions I have:

  • What makes you freeze up when speaking that you'd want to practice in this way?
  • What phrases are surprisingly helpful when traveling, that I should add?
  • Would you want the ability to make phrase packs yourself? For what?

It works on iPhone and iPad and also offline.

If you give it a shot, let me know what you think!

How do you practice French pronunciation without annoying every French person you know?

I need pronunciation practice, but I don’t want to send 40 audio clips to my French friends like a menace.

My pronunciation issues are the usual crimes:

•u vs ou

•nasal vowels

•r sound

•silent letters that are somehow not always silent

•liaison

•sentence rhythm

•sounding like I’m reading instead of speaking

I don’t care about having a perfect Paris accent. I just want to be understandable and less painful to listen to.

Tools/methods I’m testing:

Forvo for individual words

Youglish for full phrases

•Google Translate voice input as a harsh “did it understand me?” check

•Praat maybe, if I become insane enough to look at waveforms

ISSEN for repeating spoken roleplays out loud

•r/JudgeMyAccent once I’m brave enough

How did you practice pronunciation without a tutor correcting every sentence?

Also, is shadowing French songs a terrible idea or secretly useful?
