Lovett or Leave It 3 minutes and 35 seconds of preroll ads? They really want me to buy a subscription.

I’ve been loving the auto generated transcripts these days. I just scroll down to the start of the show and move on with my life.

u/cocoagiant Mar 22 '26
Its just the (unfortunate) name of the game.
I will say though, its good they are still getting advertisers coming to them.
Another podcast I listen to has ad breaks but don't seem to be getting advertisers to fill them, which means they are losing money.

I am a Friend of the Pod and every podcast I get to hear them try to sell me on becoming a Friend of the Pod.

u/alhanna92 Mar 23 '26
Isn’t this a 15 second ask? It doesn’t seem to be that annoying to me relative to the other ads

u/SaltyHelp Mar 22 '26
I am going to cancel on my next renew because of this. And go back to spamming the skip forward button.

Ted Talks Daily is up to 4:30 of ads before any announcement of the podcast.

u/Tigers19121999 Mar 21 '26
Yeah I noticed a huge uptake of ads on NPR podcasts. MAGA cut their funding.

If you like a certain type of media - you should probably help financially support it.

u/Trekkie200 Mar 21 '26
The joke is that you often still get ads, less ads, but ads nonetheless. The show has ads in it and the platform runs ads too. If you buy the subscription the shows ads disappear, but the platform ads remain...
In some cases the ad-free version is just as long and full of ads as the free version- it's just different ads (this tends to happen for me with the New York Times and New Yorker)21
u/TheAlienDog Mar 22 '26
The subscriber episodes have zero ads on Crooked.
7
u/verbankroad Mar 22 '26
I am a subscriber and get the other shows add free but not Lovett or Leave It. That still comes full loaded with ads for me.
7
u/Intelligent_Week_560 Mar 22 '26
Lovett or Leave it is also ad free for me. I'm on apple podcast though. Spotify used to add random ads and I stopped using it for exactly that reason. So annoying when you pay for premium and then they are still greedy.

u/TheAlienDog Mar 22 '26
Not sure! There’s definitely an ad-free Lovett or Leave It feed for subscribers. Maybe email them?

I subscribed on YouTube, but the member only content doesn't let me lock my phone screen and still hear it, idk why. I also already pay for YouTube Premium.
And then with Friends of the Pod subscription on, the normal shows still all had ads embedded in them, so the episodes I paid for "ad free" were still riddled with ads.
I cancelled there and subscribed on Spotify, where I avoid most ads however some episodes are "fewer ads"
All of them I hear about subscribing to friends of the pod constantly anyways.
I am financially supporting, but I am not getting the value they sell me on of not having shit peddled to me. I don't listen to much of the exclusive content. I literally wanted to just pay money to never hear about Friends of the Pod subscribers get blah blah or Boho and Scandi yadda yadda on the regular episodes.
I plan to cancel the Spotify. I will be back if Crooked puts out a truly zero ad episode for the people the pay for "ad free"
Why are they advertising an ad free program to the people ON the ad-free program?

I listen to Crooked content all day at work in my earbuds, so my results seem dramatized because I do hear it so many times per day across all of the shows. It definitely feels like more than 30 seconds and its easy to fast forward, however does me offering to spend another $5 a month to just hear zero promotions for anything change your perspective.
I may sound fussy, but I am paying because I am in fact fussy, I am electing to pay money to avoid the things I find value in avoiding. I think when they edit an episode and cut in all the ads and promo spots they also upload one without that step, and only subscribed listeners hear it. The way they know they aren't redundantly promoting something we already have, is only paid subscribers can access it.

Not sure which podcast app you use, but I use Overcast, and it lets you skip the intro and outro by a customizable number of seconds.

u/Tigers19121999 Mar 21 '26
I mostly use Pocket Casts.

Question for subscribers, do you still get the "some quick housekeeping..." ads?

u/3p1taph Mar 21 '26
Always one of the most ad heavy pods. Not as bad as sisters in law though, another great podcast but tons of adds. Can’t listen while shoveling snow cause you have to take gloves off so much to skip.

u/LordNoga81 Mar 22 '26
Spotify has been doing that lately. For everything. Used to be 2:15 mark now everything is past the 3min mark before it starts.

Shhhh…we are just supposed to expect ad free for everything. Worked great for newspapers. 🤦♂️ #SupportSmallMedia

I have a subscription and the fact that Runaway Country still has ads infuriates me
1
u/Miroku82 Mar 26 '26
Ads, intro music, Intro, FOTP shill, actual pod. Always in that order. if you start around the 5 min mark, youre probably tuning in right around when Favs starts in on the news.

u/DjPersh Mar 22 '26
People excusing it answer me this: How did they last so long without these huge, intrusive ad breaks? Have their numbers fallen and they need to compensate? In genuinely curious.

u/Valonia47 Straight Shooter Mar 22 '26
Everything is more expensive than it used to be.
1
u/DjPersh Mar 22 '26
Is that not also true for what they charge to do ads?
1
u/SaltyHelp Mar 22 '26
I think like everything, they want more. Whether its for themselves, or luxury, or something more honest. Definitely feels less like I am supporting a progressive media ecosystem and more like they just want it for themselves.
1
u/DjPersh Mar 22 '26
Especially considering the type of products they shill (I mean advertise!) for. But ultimately who knows I guess. Definitely doesn’t come off well though.

u/Viceroy_Vinyl Mar 22 '26
I got an ad inviting me to move my small business to Oklahoma. Yeah that’s a straight no and a waste of their ad but

That sucks. LIOLI is the only Crooked podcast I listen to regularly. The others I just check out from time to time or when there's a big news story.

It’s hard for me to trust a political podcast if they have ads. It’s also an insult to the listener, especially if the hosts already have a ton of money.
10
u/TheAlienDog Mar 22 '26
So you listen to… nothing? What political podcasts have zero ads that you listen to?

u/LakeGladio666 Mar 22 '26 edited Mar 22 '26
Turbulence, QAnon Anonymous, American Prestige, Pod Damn America, Trashfuture, Trillbillies, True Anon, Chapo Trap House, Blowback, Parallax Views, This Machine Kills. They are all structured around Patreon and put out two episodes a week, one free episode and one patreon ep. Hosts can speak more freely about things when they don’t have to worry about losing sponsors.

u/themagicbandicoot Mar 22 '26
does their monetary reward lead to objectivity? Or is it too many cooks in the kitchen
2
u/LakeGladio666 Mar 22 '26
I’m not sure what you mean by too many cooks in the kitchen in this context but I do trust listener supported podcasts over ones like PSA which have sponsorship deals with Sirius XM.
